
At the end of the seventeenth
century when, for a brief period in history, France
and England were allies, a young Frenchman traveled
from New France to Virginia in search of a kidnapped
sister-in-law. He discovered instead a young English
woman who had escaped from the same kidnappers. To dispel
her fears of ravishment by him during the time they
would spend in the wilderness, they shared a promise
