When their middle-aged father, “Papa,” a retired college professor, inherits an antique grandfather clock from an uncle who has been missing for over thirty years, Butzy and Jude become intrigued by an intricate cryptogram on the back of the magnificent, Nineteenth Century, British heirloom. Discovering that the massive longcase clock is, in fact, a time machine, the children travel to their father’s past in order to erase a traumatic childhood experience, inadvertently altering that past in a destructive way.

As Jude recovers from the physical aftereffects of a reluctant solo trip into the past to rescue a friend, Butzy learns not only that “Herbert” (from “G. Herbert Timepieces, Ltd.”), the grandfather clock, can send travelers forward in time, but also that Papa’s long missing Uncle Frank has been marooned in the future because of his careless misuse of the antique timepiece in 1969. Faced with a dilemma, Butzy must decide whether or not to rescue her great-uncle, her decision made all the more difficult by the fact that her sister’s very life hangs in the balance.
