The Great BooDinie Bird:
The Capture

by Sherry Jessop

~ Excerpt ~

The story of the Magical BooDinie bird had spread far and wide since the day Tamboo and Kara came running into their village telling of his eyes that glowed in the dark and lit up the night.

They told of his colorful wings of red, orange, yellow, blue and green, and when they opened, how they stretched across both of them!

They told of his voice that flowed with the wind and of the magic he worked with his wisdom, and a feeling of enchantment fell upon the whole village.

The story spread like wild fire.

Then one day, the hunters came. Their mission was a secret, but as they entered the deepest, darkest rainforest of South Africa, everyone knew they must be in search of the BooDinie bird.

Day after day, Tamboo and Kara watched as the hunters went deep into the forest and returned each day with empty cages.

Then late one night, out of the silence of the darkness came the cry, "Caw! Caw! Errick!"

Tamboo and Kara awoke from a deep sleep. The wind had stopped blowing, and a deathly silence covered the forest.

Tamboo ran from his hut in search of Kara. She was standing out in the night, gazing into the forest.

"Did you hear it Tamboo?" she asked.

"Yes", he said sadly. "He's been captured."

"I know it." Kara replied. "I feel an emptiness here." Kara placed her hand across her heart.

They sat on the ground and watched the night creep away as the sun brought on a new day. The forest was still silent, and there was no wind. The silence that surrounded them was chilling.
