In a Parrot’s Shoes
by Mindy Wilson

EXCERPT

Monday, I was sitting at my desk, daydreaming. I watched a couple of robins outside looking for breakfast. Three weeks of fifth grade left! I had on my favorite shoes, hi-top canvas basketball shoes. I have a red pair and a yellow pair. I never wear the two matching shoes, ever.

"Class, meet Megan Parrot, her dad is the new Postmaster. Please introduce yourselves," said our teacher, Mrs. Swayzack.

"Good morning, Megan," my classmates and I said together. Megan smiled in return. She stood close to Mrs. Swayzack and wore jean coveralls and a blue and white striped T-shirt. "Pretty," I said to Debbie, who sat in front of me.

Mrs. Swayzack led Megan to the desk next to me. She sat down, and put a small green notebook inside the desk. I whispered to Megan, "Hi, I'm Mindy."

Mrs. Swayzack handed Megan a spelling book. Then she pronounced a word, saying the first person to spell it correctly won a piece of gum. She had so many rules about chewing gum in class; it nearly took the fun out of it. Four people won gum. It seemed like everyone had gum, except me.

At ten-thirty, we went outside for Phys. Ed. I was a team captain. I chose Megan. Thank goodness we played volleyball. It is a sport I can play. Phys. Ed. was a lot of fun, and I did well today. Megan did well, too. She even spiked the ball once!

Tuesday, Megan played at my house. We fixed a nice house for our dolls. Another time, at her house, we used huge washer and dryer boxes to make the best fort! I liked her.

One day, at lunchtime, the cafeteria served hamburgers. I always ask for two bottom buns. I hate buns with seeds. They remind me of freckles. I wouldn't want to eat freckles, so I never eat buns with seeds. Usually, the cooks have them set aside for me. I don't know why Megan had to have hers that way.
