EXCERPT

A Promise Kept and Broken

Smile when you know that you're in love
Remember the last time he left
For many days you wept and wept
He said sometime he would return
Now here he is, safe in your arms...
A silent word, a spoken sign
You know it was a promise kept.

Years go by, and people change
Words, to make time, spoken
Meaningless -- just a token
And all the love you had for him
Expressed outright or felt within
A lapse of memory? Perhaps...
But, still, a promise broken.

This cycle will remain unaltered
Promise her the world, yet falter
Maybe one time meant with all your heart
But when you look back, it seems a joke then
Somehow they cancel out each other
And there's very little hope then
Just a promise kept and a promise broken.

American Dreamer

Sitting alone in what I call home
No one to count on but me
I have the will to take charge of things
Or simply let them all be.

Not like the next person, I'm a different sort
Like Jack or John living 'cross the street
'Cause I've got my mind; in my mind there is music
And I move to my own special beat....

I'm an American dreamer
Living my American life
Can't be nailed-down or shoved under a doorstep
Gonna marry an American wife.
And an American dreamer,
Living in the lap of American luxury,
Can be everything that I choose for myself
Or nothing, if I choose to be.

Go down to the corner in my Cadillac,
Or say hello to the girl next door
Talk to my friends on the phone to all hours
Or watch the TV for the football score.

Living my life or wasting it is my freedom
The freedom to be all I can be
Can't slow my life down, I'm dancing too fast
Dancing with American feet....

I'm an American dreamer
Wake up in American lights
Can't be cooled-off or put out like a fire
While there's a spark in my American life.
And an American dreamer,
Walking down the streets of American society,
Can be everything that I choose for myself
Or nothing, if I choose to be.

Another Day

I don't want to say
Just what it is I feel for you
But you see in my eyes
What the words just can't convey.
You don't need to know
There's a lot more here
Than words or a gesture
Could ever really show.
If you're not sure I mean it,
So many times, my darling, you've seen it...

It's another day just wanting you near me
Another day, just like the one gone by,
Will another day make one bit of difference?
For love's sake, I will try...
But another day could bring us together
Another day could bring me some hope
On some other day, my luck could be better,
If not, I'll spend another day on my own.

You don't have to speak
I can see the puzzled look on your face
And the question you have
Is the one I wish I could erase.
If it were some other time
I could have thought it through some more
But I'd only start out
From the place I was before.
Maybe I shouldn't hide or conceal it
Because, I think, somehow you can feel it...

It's another day, but the same magic moment,
Another day, just like the one gone by,
If another day could make all the difference
I really ought to try...
'Cause another day could bring us together,
Another day – there could be some hope,
On another day, we'd feel so much better,
The two of us as one, on our own.
