Reviews for
Chosen One
by Alan J. Garner
“An intriguing tale, combining fact
and fiction, past and future, skilfully woven together.
Giving the animals the animals the power of
speech, whilst not novel, in this instance provides a charming
analogy of human behaviour laced with wry humour. The descriptive
passages are well constructed, transporting the reader to
that distant time and place.
A decidedly different slant on the age of
dinosaurs, it neatly spans the realms of fantasy and sci-fi,
making it a must-read for fans of both genre. With the computer
graphics now available, this story is the ideal vehicle
for an animated film. Hopefully, someone with foresight
will do so.”

“Alan Garner is the author of this leading
New Zealand novel. From the outset The Chosen One lets you
get lost in the fantasy of make believe and is very compulsive
reading; a hard book to put down. I look forward to reading
the next story in the series.”

“I found it a little difficult reading
the first few pages as it wasn’t the type of book
I normally read. Once I got into it, I found it most interesting
and informative, easy to understand and very well written
– having the meanings of the words printed at the
back helped tremendously. Usually a book of this length
takes me some time to read, but I finished it in less than
three days. I honestly recommend The Chosen One as well
worth reading and look forward to further books from this
author.”

“Follow the author’s imagination:
it will take you into a world long ago when fantastic creatures
existed and unbelievable events occurred. The final chapter,
plus epilogue, will bring you back to reality. Wonderful
descriptions from a skilled wordsmith. A well written book
with a glossary full of explanations for the younger reader.”

“The Chosen One by Alan Garner is a
well written novel about the life and death struggles of
a group of prehistoric animals. It is an unusual mix of
prehistory, fantasy, and science fiction all rolled into
one.
It seems a “leap of faith” to
connect an alien humanoid astronaut from a civilised race
to dinosaurs, but Alan connects them together well and it
gels into a cohesive story.
I was surprised at just how often major characters
were killed off, but I guess that at this stage in history
life was short and death common. By the latter stages of
the book you are left wondering who was going to stay alive
long enough to be the chosen one or how they would be able
to help. But in the end, as so often in a well-written book,
you are simply left wanting to know what happens next.
Alan has a great sense of imagery and wordsmiths
it seamlessly into a book that is hard to put down. I eagerly
await a sequel.”

“Normally a biography man, I occasionally
like reading something that is completely different.
I found Alan Garner’s The Chosen One
to be a quirky, yet readable piece, and if anyone has a
liking for sci-fi / fantasy then this book is for you. The
writing is really descriptive and the reader has no problem
in seeing the characters and the activities of those involved
as they live, love, and laugh their way to extinction. The
book gave me an alternative look at my own human beginnings.
A really good read. Roll on the movie!”
