Prologue - Acquiring Immortality

John Destinatus was a self claimed scientist studying the mysteries of the universe.

In his world there was something people referred to as strangeness.

  This was supernatural power!

It behaved illogically and appeared sporadically.

You see... he had a goal he had been working on for over 60 years.

  He wished to become immortal!

Not as in not dying from old age.

  He wanted true immortality.

The ability to recover from any damage and to never die from old age.

He had traveled the entire world looking for strangeness.

Meanwhile the rest of the world avoided it like a plague.

People often randomly disappeared when coming into contact with the strangeness.

John went down into his basement and looked at the many cages he had.

In each cage was a monster contaminated by the mystery.

There were three creatures he was most interested in.

The first was trapped in a cage made of lead.

  Its ability was teleportation.

The second was in a standard cage.

Its vitality was godlike... no matter how it was injured it would recover almost instantly.

  The third was deathless.

It couldn't recover too quickly, but it never truly died.

He had found many variations of these creatures.

He named them their species 'Subject Teleportation', 'Subject Immortal', 'Subject Deathless'.

  John had studied their genomes.

There was nothing different about them compared to any other creature.

So where exactly did their power come from?

  John had a crazy idea.

He thought strangeness affected the soul!

He was running out of time.

He was already 90 years old.

He could feel his vitality fading away.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

He had stopped eating and drinking.

He spent every second trying to crack the 'code' of strangeness.

  He had tried everything.

  Visualization techniques.

  Meditation.

  Yoga.

  Trying to feel his soul.

  But those were dead ends.

  All hope seemed lost.

  Until something interesting happened.

You see. He was in his basement extracting blood from 'Subject Deathless'.

It was routine habit of his.

  John was slightly insane.

He felt that if he did the same thing enough times.

Maybe he would uncover the secret.

  Something he had overlooked.

  Something he had missed.

As he was extracting, he had a seizure.

  He lost consciousness quite quickly.

When he woke up he was in a hospital.

His assistant had called the ambulance after finding him knocked out in his lab.

They told him he had been in coma for a few days.

John could see white balls of energy floating above everyone's heads.

He suspected that he was merely hallucinating...

Maybe this was a manifestation of his desire to see the soul.

  He looked above his head.

He saw a white ball of energy there as well.

He waited until he got home.

  He let his assistant retire.

Once he made sure he was alone.

He pinched the ball of energy.

It squeezed like a stress ball.

He felt a sharp pain in the center of his brain.

He let go of the ball and the pain went away.

"Hmm... this doesn't seem like a mere hallucination."

John then went to check on the monsters in his lab.

He noticed that they also had shapes above their head.

  But it was entirely different.

'Subject Teleportation' had two cubes colliding with itself.

'Subject Immortal' had a red sphere feeding energy into a cone.

'Subject Deathless' seemed to have an infinity symbol shaped handle.

John wondered if he could also touch these energies.

He believed that maybe the seizure had given him the ability to see the soul!

He spent 3 days squeezing and messing around with their souls.

His soul no longer looked like a white ball of energy.

If one had to describe it, it looked like a blackhole with an infinity symbol inscribed into it.

With a red transparent layer of skin.

He cut his hand to see if he had acquired the mysterious abilities.

  Unfortunately... he did not.

"I suppose it was just a delusion after all."

  He felt deep disappointment.

He could feel he only had a few hours left to live.

  His heartbeat was irregular.

  He was extremely thirsty.

He felt like he was about to faint.

He was about to enter a sleep that he would never awaken from.

But then he had an idea.

"I'm going to die anyway. Why not go out with a bang?"

With one hand he grabbed his soul.

With the other, he grabbed the colliding cube of 'Subject Teleportation'.

  He then threw them together.

The pain he felt was unimaginable.

Unknowingly he had created a wormhole.

The cage 'Subject Teleportation' was in broke and it attempted to teleport away.

But both souls had merged together.

The lab blew up and John disintegrated.

Instead of his soul dispersing like it would for anyone else.

His soul took on characteristics of the wormhole.

His consciousness bounced around the universe for millions of years.

  Without having a brain.

  He had no thoughts.

He remained 'unconscious' throughout his entire journey.

  His journey was not simple.

His soul was tempered by constant stress.

  It become unbreakable.

  It became eternal.

Eventually... the wormhole ran out of energy.

The soul was on its own.

But it felt a deep longing.

  A longing for consciousness.

  It flew by itself.

Burning the energy it had accumulated over millions of years.

  It found a host.

A young man who had been poisoned to death.

  John took over his body.

  It was already a corpse.

His soul was about to go try to find another host.

  But John opened his eyes.

His soul began to take root.

He consumed the soul of the young man.

  Merging together.

  He inherited some memories...

The strange abilities that had been dormant in John's soul became active.

He became both immortal and deathless.

His immortality expelled the poison that had initially killed his host.

The corpse came back to life!
