Chapter 5 - Surgery

"Fascinating, his body is somehow able to fight the virus, we will have to run more elaborate tests to explore his abilities further". Henry is lying down. He feels groggy, and is unable to move his body. He tries opening his eyes, but fails to do so. He can clearly make out the voice of Adam talking next to him. It seems like he is discussing something with someone.

"It's too early to go to extremes, we should continue with the routine checks, i'm certain we will find something useful". It's Emma speaking, she sounds desperate as she speaks her case, almost afraid. Henry tries to move again, and manages to twitch his fingers, but nothing else. The feeling in his fingers is slowly returning, though most of his body still feels numb. It feels like he is slowly lowering his arm into warm water, heating up his fingers, then his hands, then his arms.

"I disagree, we have never had another test subject with these symptoms. This could be groundbreaking, and we don't know for how long he will stay like this. Urgency is of utmost importance". Henry doesn't recognize the man talking. It's a raspy voice, like that of an older man who has smoked throughout most of his life. Henry tries once again to move, and this time his whole hand responds, clutching into a fist, and then relaxing again. Henry feels a kind of urgency, hearing the people discuss his condition. What was so special about him, and what were these extreme tests, that Emma wanted to avoid?

"I'll have to agree with James, we have to stay on top of this, and make the most of it. James, you will take charge of his case, and will keep me informed about every procedure and all results. Emma, you will do what he tells you, understand?" Adam ends the sentence with a harsh tone, making it clear that there is no objecting to the decision. Henry opens his hand again, feeling his arm and whole body regain motion with every passing second. He finally manages to open his eyes, and is able to catch a glimpse of a lab coat standing to his left. He can't tell who is wearing it and lacks the power to turn his head. He tries to say something, but only manages to mumble some gibberish. The noise catches the persons attention, and they turn around to reveal a short and puffy man with thin grey hair, and blue eyes. He is quite a bit older than anyone else Henry has met so far. He must be the man Adam referred to as James.

"Incredible, he is waking up already!" The man exclaims. He looks at Henry the way a child would look at their present under the christmas tree, almost like he saw Henry as nothing but an object to play with. It caused a shiver to run down Henry's spine, which otherwise still felt numb, and hard to move.

"This truly could be what we have been looking for, the missing piece". The man, James, seems ecstatic as he looks at Henry, and he sees Emma and Adam come into view as they approach him.

"Impossible", Emma says, her voice is weak, and she is looking at Henry with a saddened look. Henry tries moving again, and manages to push his arms against the table he is on, sitting up slightly. He remembers the physical tests, and what he did, attacking the soldiers. The whole episode seems almost blurry. He looks down at his left arm, but there are no black veins. Had he just imagined it?

"If you don't mind Adam, I'd love to get started right away," James says, looking over at Adam. Adam looks at James, and nods.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

"Go ahead," is all he says, as he turns around and walks towards a door behind him. Henry looks around the room, and realises he is in an operating room. He looks at Emma, but she doesn't meet his eyes. Instead, she takes a few steps back.

"Alright then, you two, give him another shot of myoblocker so we can constrain him". Henry looks over at where James is looking, and see two soldiers step closer towards him, a feeling of panic sets in, and Henry tries to get up. He manages to get off the table, but falls to the ground, his legs still not strong enough to move properly.

"Very impressive young man, but save your energy, you will need it". Henry looks up at James as he tries to stand up. The man is smiling, and Henry can tell, that whatever he has planned, it won't be good. A jab in Henry's left shoulder makes him spin around, where one of the soldiers is standing, pushing a syringe through his skin, and injecting the myoblocker. Already weak from the previous doses, it doesn't take long for Henry to feel the effects, and he quickly loses control of his limbs, as his conscience slips away.

Myoblockers are what EVO Future decided to call the serum that paralyzed the infected. They were quick to patent it, forcing governments all over the world to accept their help or continue their own attempts at a similar product. Even so, no one thought the company was evil for their actions. They helped the countries for a small fee that only about covered the research that went into making the serum. They also advocated that the serum was highly unstable, if not done correctly, and therefore it was best to let them do it. With the serum from EVO Future and their specialized soldiers, together with the countries' own military force, it only took a little more than a year before most of the world was free from zombies.

Some countries didn't accept the help from EVO Future, most notably Russia and North Korea were strongly against getting help from America, even if the company itself had no ties to the US, and was only located there. Strong border control was established on both sides of Russia, and even though they announced their own serum against zombies only a few weeks after declining the help of EVO Future, there were many speculations that it was a lie. Many rumors circulated of mass concentration camps filled with zombies and equal parts innocent people being suspected of being zombies. Contact with the country has since been strained and less frequent. Some say the population has diminished significantly, and zombies are still, despite a massive military presence, roaming free, but it was hard to say, given the border control, and the fact that the whole world had made it impossible to travel there anymore.

North Korea for their part didn't change much from an outside perspective. There were no news from the country, and even though South Korea reinforced their side of the border, there was no change from North Korea other than the fact that visiting the country, which was already limited, became impossible. It was impossible to say what was going on on the inside of the country, and so speculations ran wild. Some said the country had become a wasteland, and no one lived there anymore, zombies killing everyone and then dying, others said the zombies had taken over the country, and it was only a matter of time before they would invade the rest of the world. The truth was that no one knew what it was actually like.

After zombies had faded away in most of the world, EVO Future quickly melted into the background. They still had bases all over the world, but they were hidden away, disguised or just placed in desolate areas where no one took notice. No one even bothered to question what they were doing in said bases and labs, and governments didn't have much to say in the matter, since they had agreed to the arrangment when they decided to accept the help and ressources of EVO Future. What happened in those labs, no one really knew.
