Chapter 18

Maddison had gone pale and halted her advance on the cowering John. Ryan, who was in the process of interfering on behalf of his wolf, stopped mid stride. He had realized the same thing Reece had, she was beginning to feel the emptiness. The virus had completed its hold.

Reece turned off the stove and rushed to Maddison's side, where she had now nearly collapsed on top of Kalie. He took her into his arms, carrying her up off the floor.

"To the living room?" Ryan asked, helping John to his feet. Reece nodded and set off down the darkened hall to the living room, across from his bedroom.

"Flick on the lights would you?" he asked Greg who had rushed after Reece to stay near his daughter.

"What's happening?" asked Chase in a panic.

"Its alright Kido." Reece comforted. "The virus is fully in her system now. She is just feeling a little off balance without a pack."

"She can be in your pack though, right? That's what your brother said."

"Yes, she and Kalie can become part of our pack. But it has to wait till tomorrow night." Said Ryan as Maddison whimpered in Reece's arms.

The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

Greg switched on the light as the others filed into the room. It was filled with comfortable couches, side tables and a huge flat screen television hung on the wall, with several game systems sitting in a display case beneath it. Reece gently laid Maddison on his most comfortable couch. Her breathing was fast and shallow, and she griped her head with both hands.

"That long?" asked Greg. "She is in so much pain."

"Its alright Greg. She'll be fine by the morning." Said Kalie sadly. "Once the shock wears off it isn't as bad. Especially since she hasn't had a pack and doesn't know what she is missing."

"I'm alright..." Breathed Maddison. Despite her words she was shivering like she had just taken an ice bath. "It just feels strange- empty."

"My advice would be for you to stay here tonight." Said Ryan, kneeling next to Reece. "Having other werewolves around will help a great deal."

"Why can't she be in a pack now?" asked chase. Reece worried this was too much for the kid; the last two days were a lot for a fourteen-year-old to take in.

"I can't ask my pack to just accept two new wolves without letting them meet properly first and see if they fit. I need the day to set up a run. People need time to prepare for a last minute get together. We can kill two birds with one stone by having Maddison experience her naming at the same time she and Kalie run with the pack."

"So Maddison will have to change her name?"

"She doesn't have to if she doesn't want to. It is tradition though, and it might convince the more traditional of the pack to accept her and Kalie."

"Hey, lets play something." Said John to Chase in an attempt to distract the boy. "Reece has Call of Duty. I don't know about you but I'm in the mood to blow things up."

"Yeah, okay. I'm Chase by the way..."
