Chapter 9

Maddison collapsed onto her bed some hours later. She was absolutely exhausted. She didn't even know if she had the energy to go try out her new bathtub.

It was worth it in the end. All of her furniture was set up the way she wanted, and most of her boxes were unpacked. Really, all that was left to do was to put up her pictures. But that could wait till the morning. She had another day off and so had plenty of time to take care of it.

On a sigh, she rolled over and fished her cell phone out of her pocket checking her texts. Nothing. It wasn't like Kalie to go radio silent for a whole day. She hit dial and put the phone to her ear.

Nothing. She was worried now. If that Wayne hurt her she'd-!

Angry, Maddison dragged herself out of bed and to the washroom. Perhaps a hot shower would clear her head. A shower then she would try and call Kalie again.

She turned the water on high and began to remove her clothes. Despite her worry over Kalie, today was pretty fun. She found it curious that spending time with Reece was so easy. Normally she was more awkward around men, but not with Reece. Somehow being near him just felt natural.

Even finding out that he wasn't the squeakiest clean of cops didn't really dampen her view of him all that much. If anything, she thought better of him. He stood up for his friends and didn't let the rules stop him from doing what he felt was right while still holding to his morals.

She found it sweet how he got along with Chase as well. She knew her brother wasn't easy to take. He was unconventional and up front about things, and that could rub people the wrong way sometimes. It took a lot for Chase to warm up to people, but he and Reece seemed to be getting along like they were old friends.

Maddison stepped under the water, flinching at the heat at first but then becoming accustom to it. She wouldn't take a long shower. Once her hair was soaked through she lathered in the shampoo. Rinse and repeat with conditioner. Soaping up with the luffa was easy work and she enjoyed the movement of it.

Once more she rinsed, watching the bubbles slip over her breasts and down her stomach.

It wasn't till she was out of the shower and drying herself off that she aloud her mind to wander back to Kalie. Surly she would have texted at least once by now to say weather or not the picnic was a success or disaster. She expected to have her ear chatted off till the early hours of the morning.

She had just slipped on a pair of red panties when her phone wrang. Stephanie gasped and dashed over to her new vanity to grab it. Yes, it was Kalie!

"Hello! Kalie? What took you so long to call-"

"I take it you are the human girl that my Kalie has been spending all her time with?" snarled a man's voice.

Maddison's blood ran cold. Human? That would imply that whoever was on Kalie's phone was not human. Where was Kalie?

"Maddison right? She never shuts up about you, you know?" growled the voice. Maddison began to shake. "I mean, what right does the bitch have to spout on and on about some human when I'm the one she belongs to?"

"Who are you?! Kalie doesn't belong to anyone! Where is she? What have you done with her?!" she shouted at the phone.

At first the man only laughed. A breathy, creepy laugh. "She is my bitch. Or was anyway. Iv decided I'm done with her. And since she is so fond of you, I figured I'd gift her to you. Why don't you come downstairs and see the present I left for you? She even had the address already written on her. Dumb whore."

Sick to her stomach, Maddison rushed to her window, not even caring that she was one strip of red satin away from being completely nude. She couldn't see anything on the front lawn but it was hard to tell in the dark and from this height.

"Where is Kalie!?" she screamed at the voice on the phone.

"I already told you." He laughed. The line went dead.

Griped in a fearful panic, Maddison grabbed her green silk robe off the bed and threw it on. She tucked the phone into the small pocket, not really caring if it fell out at this point.

She threw open her door and ran down the stairs as fast as her wet, bare feet would allow, her damp blonde curls slapping against the wall.

Please let this be a bad joke! Please let Kalie be okay! She prayed to whomever may be listening.

When she reached the entryway she didn't even hesitate to open the front door. She did, however, come to a skidding halt when she saw the front step was soaked in blood.

A strangled cry escaped Maddison's lips before she could stifle it, and she fell to her knees right in the doorway. There was so much blood. But where did it come from?

She didn't have to wait long for her answer. A wet gulping noise followed by several whimpering sounds drew her attention to the lawn beneath Reece's bay window. In the shadows something was moving jerkily, and making pitiful noises.

Another cry escaped Maddison's lips, and tears spilled over her cheeks.

"Kalie...?" she whimpered, not wanting it to be true.

But at the sound of the name the creature went still. Then a single, glowing, red eye became visible and suddenly Maddison couldn't breath. As her eyes adjusted to the dark she could just make out short, spiky, pink hair matted In blood.

  "No, Kalie..." Maddison moaned painfully.

That's when the monster attacked. Maddison barely had time to scream before she was set upon by a snarling mass of limbs, blood and teeth.

Now that she was in the light coming from the open door, Maddison could see that this really was Kalie. But not as she remembered her friend.

This Kalie was covered in open wounds and burns, and around her neck was a thin wire collar made of what looked to be silver, the metal searing into Kalie's skin. There was no recognition in her once beautiful eyes now turned red and wild. And inside Kalie's mouth was a set of ferocious teeth. This was and wasn't Kalie.

Trying to keep the monster that once was her best friend from tearing into her throat, was hard work. Was Kalie always this strong?!

Maddison did the only thing she could think of as Kalie's nails- no, claws- tore into her sternum, and those deadly teeth sliced into the muscle of her left arm. She cried out for help.

"REECE!!" she screeched for her life as Kalie's fangs plunged again into the flesh of her arm, shredding tissue.

The first floor door slammed open and a huge mass of fur ploughed into Kalie, knocking her off of Maddison.

Gasping for air, she rolled over onto her stomach, her robe all but useless now, and saw Kalie wrestling with a 200 pound, jet black dog. Either from shock or blood loss, she didn't know, but for some reason Maddison just couldn't look away.

As she watched, fur began to spread over Kalie's body, but then she let out a heart breaking wail of pain and the fur receded, leaving Kalie wilder than ever.

The dog made another grab for Kalie but got swatted away just before it could catch hold. It rolled back toward where Maddison lay, soaked in both Kalie and her own blood, and she saw its eyes. They were the most dazzling emerald green color...

She gasped as she realized that this was no dog at all but Reece. Reece was a werewolf!

But that wasn't all.... Kalie- Kalie was a werewolf too. She was only partially transformed at the moment, but there was no denying it now. Had Kalie always been a werewolf?

A cry of despair escaped Maddison's mangled chest. What had they done to Kalie?!

Reece made another pass at Kalie, this time nearly getting her by the neck. Fear griped Maddison. He was going to kill Kalie!

"Reece, no!" she cried and the wolf jumped back as Kalie made a grab for him. "My friend..." she moaned as the world began to grow dim. She was loosing consciousness.
