9) The Disgraced Black

Harry and Ron looked at each other before they spoke simultaneously.

“That was pretty cool, wasn’t it?”

  “What’s a disgraced Black?”

Ron blinked at Harry while both Hermione and Neville turned to look at him. Before he could answer though, Harry asked more.

“What about blood traitor and mud blood?”

Ron looked slightly uncomfortable as he spoke hesitantly, “I don’t really know what disgraced Black means, but I think he meant that Keith was kicked out of the house. Or he isn’t acknowledged by the Blacks as their own.”

Neville nodded, “Keith’s grandmother married a halfblood.” he said and when he saw Harry’s confused expresson, he explained, “It’s someone who has one magical parent and one muggle parent. The Black family is a pureblood supremacist family and they did in fact, cut off this branch of the family from the main one. But it still doesn’t change the fact that Keith carries the blood of the Blacks.”

“As for blood traitors and mudbloods…” Ron said, “The old families like Malfoys call other purebloods who are friendly with halfbloods, muggle borns and muggles. They call us blood traitors.”

“And mudblood is an… extremely offensive word that’s used to insult muggle born witches and wizards.”

“Yeah.” Neville joined in, “It means that the person’s blood is dirty, disgusting or tainted. In other words, impure.”

Hermione silently listened instead of interrupting for the first time and once the discussion was done, she stood up from the seat.

“I’m going to talk to Keith.” she said, looking slightly nervous but Neville could see some sort of determination etched on her face.

He turned to look at Harry and Ron, but the two of them seemed glad that she was leaving.

Feeling that he wasn’t welcome to stay anymore and remembering that he had to look for his toad, he left behind Hermione. They split midway as Neville went back to searching while Hermione headed straight to Neville’s compartment after finding out it’s location from him.

Soon, she was right in front of the door and opened it. Inside, she saw Keith staring silently at a girl who was petting a white kitten.

“Keith, how did you do it? Taking off that boy’s clothes so effortlessly I mean.”

Keith looked up at her and sighed, “Come inside and close the door first. Then we can talk.”

Tracey Davis’s attention was now fixed on Keith, looking incredibly curious while she watched the bushy haired girl close the compartment door from the corner of her eyes.

“You did what?” she asked, but Keith simply gave her a short glance before shrugging, “Some idiot insulted me so I taught him a lesson.”

Then, he looked at Hermione who had decided to sit down, “You said you read all the books and memorised most of the stuff right?”

“Yes, I did. I might have to re-read the books to make sure I don’t forget but yes, I’m confident that I know most of it.”

“Great.” Keith said with a nod, “Then you must know about wingardium leviosa right?”

Hermione nodded but before she could say a word, Keith continued, “Well, there’s a spell that’s slightly advanced compared to the levitation charm. It enables us to move things with better control, speed and precision. It’s the locomotor spell and you can use it to move anything you want to.”

“But…” Hermione began, “you didn’t use any incantations back then.”

Keith silently stared at her for a while before leaning forward, “Listen here Hermione, every witch and wizard has their secrets. And it’s not a good habit to go around trying to dig stuff out of people.”

This seemed to have hit the girl’s soft spot as she hung her head low. Keith on the other hand nodded to himself before speaking softly, “It’s non verbal spell casting or silent casting. It’s an advanced concept that’s usually not taught in school but depending on which professor we get, this might change.”

“I think you should leave now, I’m sleepy and need some rest.” he added quickly.

Hermione nodded and walked towards the door before pausing, “You shouldn’t have fought that boy, are you not afraid of getting into trouble?”

Keith didn’t respond this time and she left the compartment with a frustrated frown on her face while Tracy Davis looked at Keith suspiciously.

“Can you really do that silent spells thing?”

“Only for one spell.” he answered as he leaned against the window and closed his eyes.

Tracey seemed to have decided to keep shut, and Keith appreciated the silence apart from the occasional purring and meowing of his kitten.

‘It’s a good thing I prepared a lie for situations like this but it’s a pity that I had to use it so soon… locomotor, if only I actually knew how to perform the actual spell.’ he thought inwardly as he felt slightly dejected.

The magic he used against Malfoy was pure telekinesis, something he had done accidentally when he was just four years old.

‘If I hadn’t stubbornly tried to recreate that incident multiple times, I probably wouldn’t have gotten a hang of it at all. I’m glad I did, but this will be my special secret that no one is supposed to know. Mom said that it’s always better to have a hidden weapon up your sleeve for emergencies after all.’

He then quickly drifted off to sleep, only to be woken up by an aggressive shake. He opened his eyes groggily and looked at Tracey who was now in her school robes, ones that were plain and had no badges or colours.

“One of the seniors said that we must put on our robes quickly. We’re getting close to hogwarts.”

Keith nodded as he heard this and pulled out his trunk before grabbing his uniform. He then looked up at her and pointed at the compartment door, “Two minutes.”

With a simple nod, she left him alone in the room and he quickly changed before opening the door. There, he saw Tracey standing silently while Neville walked towards her with red, puffy eyes.

  “I couldn’t find Trevor…”

Keith sighed before speaking, “Well, just put on your robes first. We can ask one of the professors for help and see if they can help.”

“Yes, I hope so.” Neville said, his voice cracking as he walked into the compartment with Keith.
