Chapter 39

“You’re too late, Hex”, Phoebe’s face hardened as she turned back to the pile of chocolate. “[Holy Beam]!”. The beam of light cascaded over the enchanted candy. And yet, a darkness rose up to defend it, a shadowy shield. The light slowly rippled and burned through it- slowly. “Um”, Phoebe stared at it in surprise. “Count Boogula… could you just buy me a little more time?”.

Hex’s massive eye snapped onto me, a fire burning within. ‘Just buy me a little more time’, sure. Right after I cure cancer.

“[Eye of Mercy]!”, the laser came so unexpectedly I barely dodged it, bobbing and weaving as it carved right through the air. When did Hex start casting spells in humanspeak?! And that wasn’t ‘merciful’ by any stretch of the imagination!

Quickly growing bored with me, he turned back to Phoebe. “[Spookier Mazier]!”, I shouted out, covering her with mirrors. The shards of Hex’s wings formed into magnifying lenses, as he prepared to strike right through the shield. I desperately dove towards him!

The lenses were knocked aside by my charge, weakening the laser. But just as I relaxed… “[Eye of Mercy]!”- the beam grazed my tail!

It didn’t burn, or even hurt. What was going on? All of a sudden I was no longer in my body- time moved slowly around me, and I no longer felt like a part of it. I was disconnected.

Why had I wanted to be an adventurer again? The haunted house was a much more fitting place for me to be. Ghosts shouldn’t be wandering around like this, they have a role to play. Phoebe and the other humans all knew that, too. I had been goofing around for far too long.

Phoebe… that’s right. I refocused on the world, watching her. A bead of sweat rolled down her face as she continued burning through the curse. Hex hovered behind her, casting a spell. “[Sunrise Break]!”- the sounds were slowed down and distorted, but somehow I comprehended them instantly. My precious pocket dimension shattered into pieces, as he prepared to shoot down Phoebe with his holy magic.

A new sensation came over me. It felt so cold and tingly. As I probed it, it got worse and worse, until it finally hit me- this was fear. More emotions came over me, and soon I was bombarded by memories of the past, filling up my cold body with warmth. That’s right… I didn’t want to be just another ghost! I was Count Boogula!

With that declaration the spell snapped, throwing me back into the present. The light had already gathered in front of Hex’s eye, a spear ready to destroy a soul. I screamed as the beam took flight.

Phoebe’s holy light had finally purified the chocolate, and she quickly spun around. But it was too late- Hex’s attack hit her head-on. The light crackled around her like electricity before slowly fading away.

“Phoebe…?” I croaked. She turned to me. But her eyes were golden.

have to go for it. This'll make the story so much more interesting. I do have to brainstorm exactly how this'll all plan out, though- this will extend the story quite a bit.
