3. Contact.

  Water's my first priority.

I get up and spend a few minutes stretching, before grabbing a sturdy stick and venturing off to a hill nearby. The air feels fresh. The mist making the whole experience a little surreal. I fall into a trance like state as I slowly make my way to the top of the hill.

I feel a little refreshed, though still famished. From on top, I spot a winding river about an hour's journey away. I mentally chart out a path to it and set off. By this point, the sun has started shining down upon me.

As I make my way to the river, I find a fragile-ish rock that comes in thick plates. I pick up another rock and use it to hammer a bowl out of the material. I also collect more fiber and dry sticks in my other arm.

It's almost noon by the time I reach the river. I would use the water to cool off, but I don't want to get any water on my scrapes. Nevertheless, I repeat the process of setting up a fire, and use the bowl to boil my water. I have to wait an excruciating amount of time before it cools and I can drink it.

It's by far the best tasting water I've ever had.

I repeat the process a couple of times before I am fully quenched. My hunger remains, but I do not have an easy solution to that problem. Hunt animals? With what tools?

Plants could easily be poisonous. So. I have to hunt for survival. Maybe I should set up traps instead? Hmm.

I begin to ponder my options, and am interrupted when I feel a hand upon my shoulder. I jump.

"Apologies." Comes a reserved voice. I look behind and see a person. A person! (what else could it be)

She's a little shorter than me. Very regal like, wearing elaborate purple robes and carrying a silver staff with a cubic crystal floating on top. What is she, a wizard? a wizardess? What's freaky is that her eyes lack an iris. Just pure whites.

"Uh, no problem." I say, mentally shifting gears. "Hello!"

"Greetings." She nods at me. "My name is Cipher Elenai. I've come here at the urging of my colleague. She has the gift of foresight, and predicted the death of an individual in this area within the next hour."

"Oh." I say, not knowing how to respond to that. "I will endeavor to not die, then. Presumably by leaving this area. How did she say I'd die again?"

"She did not specify. Most likely she did not know."

This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.

I nod. "So you've come to save me then? How heroic of you."

She tilts her head. "It is my duty. Tell me, are you afraid of heights?"

I narrow my eyes at her in suspicion. "No, why do you ask?"

In response, she smiles and taps the ground. I feel a pulse of energy with my arcane sense, and the ground beneath us begins lifing into the air, leaving behind a hole in the ground. I am suddenly very aware of my footing.

"What are you doing?" I yell. "There's no way this is safe!"

"I will bind our feet to the rock. We will not fall." She says, and then I yelp as I drop a couple of inches. I look down, and my feet are encased in rock. Rock that used to be dirt. Well, at least it's structurally stable.

I give her my most gobsmacked expression I can manage. She grins like a mischievous schoolgirl.

Then we . I windmill to keep my balance, and having my footing literally frozen in stone does not help. I find an awkward position that helps me stay stable, at the cost of straining some of my muscles.

I feel the wind buffet me. Below, the ground is rushing by. We're only barely above the treeline. If I could reach down, I could touch the leaves.

I turn my head to Cipher. She's staring out ahead, a look of deep concentration on her face. Right, shouldn't distract our pilot then.

I activate bullet time. The effect is immediate. The sound of wind turns to something more deeper, slow. I watch as the strands of her hair move in slow motion. No, that's not what I meant to do.

I focus on my arcane sense, and the tendrils within my body unveil themselves to me. Before, I was pushing raw energy out, this time I wanted to try something different. My new sense was limited to existing constructs, but I’d learned earlier that I could build new ones. I suppose you should be able to guess as to my next actions now.

I focus on my hands, and it takes a small amount of time before the constructor construct is able to reach it's tooling there. I replicate the mico-structure by which the constructor uses to create it's tendrils, only I have to manually direct its inputs.

I do so slowly, watching as it pulls from my channels and forms thin fragile threads outwards. *Success!* I cheer inwardly. But the thread rapidly decays once it exits my skin.

I pause. Then I try again, varying my inputs to the device. It fails. I try again.

Eventually, I am able to form stiff branches from it. A far cry from the easily maneuverable tendrils I've seen my other constructs use, but it's the only form that's able to resist decay. It cost quite the amount of energy to create however. Energy that is slowly lost to repairing the erosion of its outer layers.

But! My senses carry from it. If need be, I can, for a small cost of energy, briefly scan a large volume by producing a net of tendrils and deploying them all at once.

I turn my attention back to Cipher. She's unaware of my actions, still deeply concentrated on keeping us moving forward. I want to investigate her proximity to see if I can find tendrils growing off of her as well, and gain an understanding of how's she doing all this. Sadly, common sense holds me back. Not too interested in tinkering with the engine while it's running. Or invading someone's privacy.

Maybe I can just ask her?

Hmm. I decide upon doing so as soon as we reach our destination. Wherever that may be.
