Hunter slammed the door open as he marched away from the bath. He was breathing heavily but was actively trying to slow his breath. Each powerful exhale would have been more suited for a warhorse.
He didn’t know where he was going. He just walked and fumed.
What was Daggat thinking? Hunter was inches from going feral. He knew the goblin was a bully at heart. He WAS a goblin after all. It was part of his charm. Hunter also knew that, in his own twisted way, Daggat was trying to help him.
Daggat shouldn’t have brought up his mother.
He turned a corner in the hall. This place was a maze. So many rooms and oddly shaped hallways. It was easy to get lost. Right now, Hunter didn’t care.
Two corpse wood turned a corner. Hunter growled and summoned his torch. Hadn’t they destroyed all of these by now?
“Not now!” He yelled at no one in particular. He slammed the torch into the dry wood, and they crumbled. Not a brilliant bash, just a straight hit. Hunter stomped on a burning piece of wood before it could light into a bigger fire. That only made him angrier. He roared and punched the wall.
His fist went through it.
“Hunter?” Anath had caught up to him. Her voice was filled with worry. He forced himself calm and wrenched his arm free. He looked at the splinter in his hand. “I… um… brought you your pants.”
Hunter blushed and snatched the trousers from her. He wasted no time in putting them on, as well as the rest of his clothes.
“I’m okay. I just needed to cool off. Sorry for worrying you.”
“No! You don’t have to be sorry. Daggat… he’s just… so… ARGH!” She kicked the wall. Dust sprinkled in the hole Hunter made. He smiled. It was nice having a friend be mad for you.
“He didn’t know. And I think he was just trying to help.” Hunter said. Anath made a sour face.
“Are you really okay?”
“I am. Thank you.” He felt more embarrassed now than mad. Daggat told him what happened to him. Getting stabbed and growing up as a gremlin. He had lost family too.
“Gonna be REAL awkward when you get back.” A second voice chimed in. Zuss.
“I hope he’s not too upset,” Hunter said while rubbing the back of his head.
“Don’t worry about it. I think it will be good for him. For you too. That was impressive.” Zuss leaned against the wall casually and folded her arms. It looked odd, with her unusually long arms. “Daggat has an ego. Well, we all do. But, his is especially inflated. He was trying to help you, you know.” A pink shape drifted towards them. Elyndris.
“Help how! By bullying him until he breaks?!” Anath snapped back.
“Anath, where we come from, you either toughen up or get stepped on. Literately, sometimes. He was just trying to get Hunter to stand up for himself. I’ve seen him do it before.” Zuss explained. Hunter was right, Daggat was trying to help him.
“But-”
“It’s okay, Anath. I should have told him about my past, too. I… don’t like thinking about it.”
“Sometimes, things have to be broken first to be rebuilt properly,” Elyndris said as she drifted to them. “I think we will be stronger, once we get passed this. Daggat will learn from this, just as Hunter has.” He had? Well, he did feel a certain weight off of his shoulders. As though he wasn’t holding onto so much misery.
“I still shouldn’t have gotten so mad. Daggat had his own… problems. He just pulled a nerve.”
“It’s fine. He’s been through worse. He can handle a little shouting.” Zuss said. “I think it’s just Elyndris who hasn’t been through hell.”
“You were there just a few hours ago. That was traumatizing.” Elyndris retched from the memory of her brew day celebrations. Hunter laughed again. It felt good.
“Hold on, what… what is that?” Zuss was pointing at the hole.
“Oh, my bad. I was blowing off steam.” Hunter said. He forgot how big he was now. He needed to be more careful.
“No, I mean. Hold on.” Zuss put her head through the hole. “There’s a… whole other hallway here. Behind the wall.” Her voice was muffled.
“Get back.” Anath untied her swords. They were bundled and tied to her back since they couldn’t find the sheaths.
A few minutes later Anath had torn a hole through the wall large enough for Hunter.
“Daggat is going to lose his mind when he sees this. Let’s check it out for a moment.” Zuss said. She moved to enter, but Hunter held a hand to stop her. Wordlessly, he entered first. Roots shied away from his torch, scuttling away like cockroaches.
They followed the hidden passageway to a set of stairs. It branched in different directions.
They decided to head straight. Eventually, it led straight to a wall. A chain with a wooden handle dangled from above. Hunter gave it an experimental pull. The wall lifted and swung inward a few inches.
Deteriorating clothes and a second door waited on the other side.
“What a strange place to put a closet…” Hunter mused. Anath gasped.
“It’s not a closet! It’s a secret door!” She pushed through the group and climbed in.
The second set of doors led to the lord's living quarters.
“This place just got a lot harder to search. No wonder we can’t find the demon.” Hunter said. Anath sighed.
“We better go get Daggat.” She said. “And Klaw. We shouldn’t be too far apart.”
“You are right. You think he’s still mad? I think I might have scared him too much.” Hunter asked.
“Scared?” Elyndris said. “Hunter, YOU didn’t scare him. That goblin has faced a demon and the dead without flinching. You showed him how wrong he was. He saw you as a tool. You showed him you are a person. Something like that can change an entire worldview. That was what frightened him.”
“He’s not used to being wrong. It’s for the best. He’s got a good head. His heart just needs to catch up.” Zuss said. “He will snap out of it pretty quick, knowing him.”
Suddenly a far-off voice screamed through the manor.
“KLAW!” Was that Daggat? It was loud, far louder than possible.
They sprinted towards the bath.
—
Daggat held his knees to his chest. He was dry by now, but he still hadn’t gotten up to get dressed.
What was going to happen now? Hunter and Anath seemed mad at him. He lost their trust. What was he without the trust of his crew? Nothing. He didn’t have Klaw’s strength or Zuss’s ruthlessness. Even Elyndris could contribute more than Daggat in a straight fight.
What did he have? A library in his head and trick eyes that only worked half the time. What a joke. He needed to work on himself a bit more. Most of his energy has been going to strengthening them.
He felt a sudden pang of fear.
What if they left him? Just decided they were done with him bossing them around. They could survive anywhere without him. But he couldn’t survive without them. This was his fault. He treated them, even his family, like tools and weapons. Even after losing Glut and after getting Zuss hurt.
He let out a shaky breath. It fogged in front of his face.
It might be better for them if he left. He could just transfer the party to Elyndris and disappear. But could that make up for his actions? Daggat had built Glut to be his shield. Now he was dead. He urged Zuss to become his shadow. Now, she was reclusive and scarred. Klaw… well, Klaw liked being a weapon.
But Hunter was now stuck as a Hearth Tender because of him. If he survived this, what then? He was only good at fighting undead. Did Daggat ruin his chances for a normal life, like Calion talked about?
Something tickled at Daggat’s legs and shoulders. He let out another shaky breath. His breath fogged and clouded his vision. Despair smothered his thoughts. It was dark in the bathhouse. Was it that dark before?
No. Daggat did that. They were having fun, and relaxing. Before he ruined it all. He darkened the mood. It would be better if he disappeared. If they couldn’t find him again. He didn’t deserve to lead them. But first, he had to do the right thing. He needed to hand over the party.
Daggat entered his status void.
“MASTER! Snap out of it!” His assistant was screaming, both at Daggat and in pain. Spectral roots invaded his status void.
The logical portion of his mind kicked into gear. Why was his breath fogging? Whose thoughts were these? They were not him. At least, not the normal him. Then he noticed the faint feeling of his life being sipped away. That couldn’t be good in the long term.
He exited the status void with a gasp. The room had darkened and grown cold. Frost was forming on the walls and fog billowed from the warm bath. Roots had crept silently towards him from the drain below the tub. They were wrapped around his ankles. Hunter’s hearth must have run out. Shit, so he was still mad. Otherwise, they would have brought him back immediately.
Daggat ripped the roots off. Luckily, he noticed before they fully had him.
Now he felt the aura for what it was. Fury flashed through Daggat. That wasn’t him after all. He didn’t wallow in self-pity. Not anymore. What he felt was the same feeling of fear and despair that he had experienced twice before. The demon. How dare someone manipulate his emotions!
“Hey, fuck off! I don’t need this shit right now. I am kind of going through something.” Daggat called to the dark. He saw it. Not the demon, but a corner of the room darker than it should be.
A dry, raspy laugh echoed through the room. Daggat scurried away from the roots.
“They left you, poor goblin.” The voice was raspy, yet powerful. There was an echoing quality that didn’t seem quite natural. Daggat fought the aura of despair.
“Yeah, no shit. I would have too after what I pulled.” Options… options… What were his options? The doors were already covered in roots, to lock him in. “Seeing as I am not dead right now, I take it you want to talk. Care to drop the spooky act?” It took every ounce of his will to keep his voice even. He could feel his legs shaking. That aura was powerful.
How long was this thing affecting them? Was it around when Hunter snapped? Part of him hoped it was, so he could blame the demon on the fallout. The other part knew it would be better to shoulder the blame. Daggat was not afraid of his mistakes. Mistakes were lessons.
“As a show of good faith,” Daggat felt his chest loosen as the fear and despair left him. He was left with anger and embarrassment. “There.”
“Now show yourself. It’s rude to negotiate in the dark.” The shadow didn’t move, but something drifted out.
Daggat stepped back as the demon revealed itself. From the waist up, it looked like a corpse wood, but far more healthy and… muscular. Fibrous? Well-branched? But there was an otherworldly quality to it. It didn’t quite fit the mood. Its legs were replaced with octopus-like tentacles made of root.
It seemed to float as if in water, but Daggat could see where it was anchored to the floor with its root-like tentacles. It seemed to defy the very rules of physics with how gracefully it drifted. The demon moved to circle him, long roots coiling around to make a lazy wall, cutting off escape. Delay. That was the only tactic Daggat had. At least, until he came up with a plan.
“So, what can I do for you?” Daggat casually dressed while it floated there. He palmed something from Klaw’s cloth piles. He had no idea why the demon didn’t just kill him. He suspected it could. But, while it was willing to talk, Daggat would chatter like his life depended on it. It likely did.
“Daggat. We are of a similar kind, you and I.” It said in a flat tone. It spoke as though reading lines from a book. No emotion, just words echoing through the fabric of reality. Daggat rolled his eyes.
“Ah, so that’s the route you are going. We can play that game. Establish a common ground and use that as a kickoff point. Straight out of the Daggat guidebook of manipulation.” Daggat wished he had some wine. It always made these talks go smoother. Of course, he usually negotiated with gremlins. How different can a demon be? “You know, I can turn that against you, right?”
You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.
“Then let us talk directly. Your companions are strong together. I could kill you all easily, but I want them alive. Help me gather your party, and you will be rewarded.” Tempting… but he didn’t just ignite Hunter's fighting spirit to abandon him. He still wanted the ogre on his team.
“Rewarded how?”
“I can grant you the gift of everlasting life. The soul of the great trees themselves.” Right, because that didn’t obviously mean turning him into a corpse wood. No thanks.
“Tempting. Why… would I do that? Betray my friends, I mean.” That was a weird word to say. Friends. Didn’t feel right, but Hunter at least considered it to be true. Daggat decided to give it a trial run. The demon continued to drift as though carried by a current.
“I watched your conversation, Daggat. They do not appreciate you.” Well, that WAS true. “One little argument and they abandoned you. Left you without a tended hearth.”
Technically, that was true. Daggat wasn’t so easily manipulated, though. Hunter was upset and is still a kid. The hearth was the last thing on his mind. It’s just taking them a bit longer to calm him down, is all.
“Yeah, that’s a decent point. The bastards. But, didn’t you want them dead?”
“That was before you destroyed two of my awakened dead and proved yourselves. I need strong test subjects.” Ooh, what was he testing? Daggat wondered if he could watch.
“Listen, Vic, oh, Can I call you Vic? Or do you prefer Victor?” The demon hissed in dissatisfaction. The demon underestimated Daggat’s knowledge.
It was an educated guess. The lady said, “My boy wants you dead.”. He assumed the demon was in charge. That meant he was her kid. According to the journal, the lord had two sons with his wife, the lady of the house.
His youngest, Alfred, was brilliant but the demon didn’t seem to be the brightest candle. So he went with the other son. Victor Varnsach.
“That is the name of my husk. But it will do.” Husk? Well, at least he guessed right.
“Okay, Vic. My crew is pretty tough. I don’t think I can take 'em out, even with you helping. Maybe I can lure them somewhere. An ambush. Where will you do the experiment? That way we don’t have to carry them far.” Victor laughed.
“Tricky little goblin. You are not as good a liar as you think.” Shit. Daggat had a bad feeling. He needed to drop some more points into Charm. He entered his status void.
“How exci-” His assistant started.
“Shut up. Find me a louder voice, now.” He thought at his assistant. Then he left. He needed help, but he couldn’t be sure Klaw was in shouting range.
“-but I don’t need you.” Daggat missed the first half of that sentence. Something villainous, probably. The demon was closing around him. It had a neutral expression on its face, but Daggat could practically sense his death.
Daggat held up a finger.
“One moment.” The demon hesitated from the pure gall of it. Daggat downed the potion. He dove to the side and under a wall of root as tentacles speared at where he just was a second ago. When he stood, the transformation was complete.
He savored the fiery rage of the drakeheart form.
This was the bathhouse. Mostly stone, to make it resistant to water damage. Luckily, the stone was also resistant to a fair amount of fire. He could go wild.
Daggat roared fire at the demon. But that was just a distraction. While still breathing fire he entered his status void again. Hypervocal chords floated in his view. Perfect. He accepted the biotrait. A tingling sensation tickled his throat as he came back, just at the end of his fire attack.
The demon covered its body with tentacles that were now singed. It was unharmed.
“Your alchemy is weak.” The demon laughed without a hint of emotion. “Behold, true alchemy!” The demon raised his arms as though to present himself. What? Daggat was pretty sure Vic was a demon. That was a line of thought for when he wasn’t about to die.
“KLAW!” Daggat roared as loud as he could. He needed help and he guessed Klaw was the closest. The sound exploded in the bathhouse. Victor reeled back. It looked more surprised than hurt. Daggat’s ear rang from his own voice.
Something bashed at the door to the boiling room. Just as Daggat expected. Klaw had been drying off by the fire.
Daggat rolled to avoid an attack he just assumed was coming, but he was too slow. A thick root wrapped around his ankle and then dragged him in the air. Curiously, he did not feel the life-draining attack he expected.
Another tentacle wrapped around his throat as he drew in a breath for another fire attack. Now the flame was stuck uncomfortably his his chest.
“This is my home. You are no longer welcome.” Daggat desperately wanted to respond. Since when was he welcome?
The door exploded inward as Klaw, naked as the day he was born, rushed in, claws raised. He roared and charged. He must have activated burst of strength to kick through the roots.
The demon threw Daggat at him. He flew through the air, much as he did once before, and hit Klaw square in the chest. Daggat coughed fire to one side. Klaw didn’t budge. He was too dense. Instead, he caught him and threw him to the side. That bastard… he could have at least set him down.
Daggat reoriented himself to see Klaw tear into the demon. The roots were sturdy, only suffering nicks and scratches. The demon was not backing down, however.
It descended on him, wrapping the struggling Klaw with root after root.
“Much obliged. We will see each other again, Daggat. This husk is starting to dry…” Then it drifted towards the dark.
No, no, no! Daggat ran forward. He didn’t know what he would do, exactly. But he had to try something. That was HIS Klaw. Get your own! Klaw had a root around his mouth, which muffled his roars of rage. They entered the dark while the demon laughed.
Daggat followed a few seconds later but only found the wall. The darkness faded along with the laughter.
They were gone. Fuck. The thing could teleport?
Daggat almost fell to his knees but stopped himself. He had done enough self-pitying that day. His mind raced. How could he find him? Then he remembered something. Gobma had tracked Zuss before. The party perks!
In the status void, the assistant babbled something about letting the demon have Klaw. Daggat ignored him and opened the party shop menu. He had two tokens.
Daggat growled. The cheapest useful perks were five and up. The only ones he could afford seemed to be cosmetic. Adding flair to the party screen. Why would anyone do that?
A perk caught his eye. Experience Recycler. It only costs one token. The description said it would allow him to recycle raw experience for tokens at a reduced rate. What was the point of that? You could just set experience to 100% party fund if you needed tokens. Maybe for people who didn't want to level up for some reason? It didn’t matter. He purchased it. A bar of available experience appeared over a little image that appeared on his screen. He recycled it all. Klaw, you better be worth it.
Normally, he would have done a little at a time, but he was short on time. He had twelve tokens now. Not bad… but it will take a bit longer to level up. Oh, well. Klaw was a, slightly, higher priority than experience. It was close, though.
Daggat purchased the party tracker perk for five points. He selected Klaw, and a green arrow appeared in front of him. It was pointing at the wall and had eighteen meters written under it. His mind raced.
He first saw the demon fall from the sky. It was clear that it controlled the roots. Then he spotted it crawling through a broken window. If it could travel through shadow, why would it bother to do that? And why was it only… twenty meters, now, ahead if it could shadow jump?
Unless it couldn’t.
Daggat ran his hands along the stone wall. Just as he expected. A seam. He followed it as best he could. A secret door. Tricky, but obvious when you consider the shadow. Why keep it there if it wasn’t hiding something? The demon must have left the door open for a quick, or convenient, getaway.
He found a loose stone and pressed it. The door silently opened. Beyond was a hall that stretched into darkness.
He needed Hunter. Hopefully, he wasn’t still mad.
The door burst open at that moment as Zuss, Anath, and Elyndris rushed in. Hunter was lumbering behind them. Daggat pointed down the hall.
“He still mad?”
“No, what was-” Zuss started. Daggat cut him off and spoke quickly.
“No time. Our brother was Klawnapped by the demon, who may or may not be an alchemical transformation of the previous lord's son, so he could perform perverse and painful experiments on him. Well, probably perverse. It ran away through a secret door, which means this place is FULL of secrets. That’s going to be a bitch, later. I can track them, though so we need to go NOW.”
Zuss and Anath had shocked expressions on their faces. Daggat sighed. Other people could never keep up when he needed them to.
Hunter lumbered in and Daggat felt his stomach drop. This was a tad awkward.
“Oh, um, sorry about earlier.” Daggat ventured. Hunter held out a hand.
“Later. I heard what you said.” He said. Hunter had dropped the torch to run easier. He summoned it back. His eyebrows furrowed into a serious expression. “Let’s go.”
