7. A Good Treant!

One Kobold steps into the light, and it calmly watches Ruvick and his undead. Then another appears, slowly the shadow around them morphs into another eight Kobolds.

Flutter of steps tap behind him. Ruvick turned to see ten Kobolds with their weapon trained on them.

To his left is the cave wall. The only escape route they have is to their right, just as when he thought that ten Kobolds marched in line position. They stopped and held their weapon ready, their mouth quirked in a grin. Ruvick could see excitement as their weapon quiver in their hands. Is that the same emotion he experiencing just earlier? An expectant for battle. A visceral wanting for it..

After surrounding them with no escape line, the Kobold slowly approached. Each step they took took up less space for Ruvick and his undead. There’s nothing much to think about. Thinking will just trap them here. “Charge!” Ruvick ordered. He ordered a charge straight to their front.

Mentally, he ordered Yuu to stay in the middle, watching Ruvick's back. But, more importantly, to provide sight. He decided to conserve his mana after looking at his full health.

Lorn rushed in, leading the charge with two wooden Kobolds as Yuu stepped back. He met the enemy line, swinging his sword, only to be blocked by another sword. He exchanged blows with two Kobolds, steel ringing through the cave.

The other two Wooden Kobolds joined. Both were wielding short daggers. They threw themselves upon the living Kobolds, taking advantage of their sturdy wooden body. Their ferocity made the defender tumble back. One of them has a dagger sprouting blood against a Kobold’s neck, breaking the line.

With their line broken, Ruvick rushed toward the opening, his two wooden Kobolds kept three Kobolds busy by sacrificing their body.

Two living Kobolds block his path, both spear wielders. They trained their spear against Ruvick's abdomen, holding it low. They growl at him, Yellow eyes squinting in a deathly glare.

Ruvick brings his spear up above his head. He held Nil with his right hand.

The Kobolds thrust toward Ruvick in unison.

Ruvick jabbed across in a downward arc. He beat the kobold by spear length. One of them has its head gouged by Nil.

With his left hand, Ruvick caught the other spear, just skipping the spearpoint. He yanks it to the left. The spear brushed against his side, pain flare briefly. He pushed forward. With Nil still stuck in the other Kobold’s head. Ruvick whips his left fist across, connecting against the Kobold's cheek. It went sprawling down to the cold rock.

He withdrew Nil and thrust it into the sprawled Kobold.

Five wooden Kobolds risen, death is not a rest for them. Ruvick and the black tendril had made sure of that.

They rush in to swarm the three Kobolds from the original eight. Making quick work of them. One of Lorn's hands was gone, a vine hanging down his shoulder.

Yuu made his way beside Ruvick. Ruvick watched as twenty living Kobolds charged at them, they did a high-pitched scream that sent an ear-ripping shriek against him. He winced under the booming sound, but none of his undead were affected by it.

“We fight!” Ruvick shouted against the noise. Fifteen of his undead form a straight horizontal line, with Ruvick and Yuu positioned on dead left. Both of them will rush behind the enemy. The Kobold task will be to hold them. He ordered Lorn not to join the fight. The one-armed wooden Kobold steps out of the line.

  (Vine Whip)

Vine shot out from Ruvick's right arm. He lashes it across, catching a Kobold's legs, making it fall, bringing another down with it.

Without a word. Ruvick ordered a charge. Unlike the living Kobolds party, his undead run silently, their mindless blank intent alone matches the living party's ferocity.

Ruvick's core lurches; he runs with his undead. A moment before the line met. Ruvick forgets death.

  Steel smashes against each other.

Bodies crashed in a heap of flesh.

The Kobolds shriek, hacking against the silent undead party.

  (Fire Enforcement)

Green blazing flame burst from Nil, engulfing Ruvick wholly. In a blink, he released seven instantaneous thrusts against two Kobolds. Green flame seared forward in a flash. Seven hole spread, bursting blood from the two Kobolds.

Three Kobolds behind them charge forward, not even a bit hesitant, seeing the burning green flame that took two of them.

Yuu rushes ahead of Ruvick. Meeting the three Kobolds. His flaming sword of light blurs in motion. Decapitating one of them and searing another one into two parts.

The last one in front of them lunges, spear manages to thrust into Yuu’s shoulder. It clanged against Yuu’s carapace.

Ruvick caught the spear, pulling the kobolds toward him. The Kobold stumbles forward. Ruvick smashed Nil against its side. The Kobold's body flew, landing right into the messy battlefield. Broken woods lay against the cave floor, blood seeped into the brown colouring it dark.

He noticed seven broken bodies of his wooden Kobolds against five bleeding bodies.

The battle started with twelve of his wooden kobolds against fifteen of the living. In just a minute, his Kobolds are facing two against one odds. Ruvick and Yuu rush in. Desperate to finish the fight.

Two Living Kobolds gorge one Wooden Kobold. Both of their blade deep into its wooden body. With a roar, Ruvick thrust Nil straight through both of their head. Letting their headless body fall.

Yuu joins the combat. White flash blinked every time he swung. Ruvick watched as one head went jumping into the air.

Two of his wooden Kobolds went down. Spears brought them down. Not counting Lorn, he only has two wooden Kobolds remaining.

Ruvick joins the fight against three Kobolds. One of his undead fights beside him, parrying sword with one hand.

He shot his vein out, whipping one of the Kobolds' legs, and it fell, breaking their formation. Ruvick orders Lorn to join the battle. Three of them pressed the three living Kobolds. His undead slit a throath as Ruvick thrust Nil through an abdomen. Lorn arrived in time to finish the fallen Kobolds.

Ruvick turned off his Fire Enforcement. He watched as white light blinked in and out. Each darkness flutters away every time Yuu brings up his sword, and goes away each time he goes for a slash. He fought with one Wooden kobold against two living Kobolds. In a short time, both Living Kobolds fell with sword gashes across their bodies.

Twenty living Kobolds' bodies lay across the battlefield. Ruvick has lost ten kobolds, but it's a number he can easily recover.

Ruvick's core pulsed in beating anticipation. Like the battle has not over. He calmed his body, releasing his knotted tension. A swirl of energy still drummed through him. The Essences inside him demanded more battle. Ruvick shoved them down. His Nature Symphony will his essence to be still, only then he felt calm washing over him like a warm river.

“A guardian,” A voice echoed. Then, a loud step.

Her hair is yellow, the colour of sunset. The human walks closer to Ruvick. Her footstep is hesitant. She scans across the dead bodies and lies across. Her eyes jolted in fear. Slowly, she gazed upon Ruvick. A mixture of fear and relief battled across her face.

  (Human Lvl 32)

  “You’re a guardian, right?”

  “No”

She skittered back, raising a short dagger.”N-No?”

“What I mean is..” Ruvick blinked, finding the proper word to defuse her. “I am”

“Wait,” The girl said. The dagger shook in her hand. “Why is a guardian able to talk?”

“Because..” He paused. Still debating for a word that would convince this human that he is anything but a threat to them. “I’m not one. I was born from...” He trailed off. He might have told too many people that he was born from Nil. Nora's warning echoed inside his mind. Do not just trust any human.

“All of you.. Only you look like a guardian,” She points her dagger toward Ruvick. “The others.. Is that a wooden Kobold? What is happening? And that one.. A Liyu? Why is its body made out of wood?”

The silence held. Ruvick wonders if there’s any other human behind her. Why is this one single young human so confident stepping in front of him?

“I'm here to help. To uncover the Kobold King's wealth, so the wealth can be used to pay the incoming adventurers.”

“You know the plan,” The human said. Her shoulder relaxed, and she brought down her dagger. Still eyeing him with suspicion.

“Are there other humans behind you?”

Her eyes flitted to the darkness, she let out a big cough. Then a fire kindled from the darkness. It lifted, revealing a torch held by a big human wearing leather armor. Another human has their bow aimed at Ruvick.

  (Human Lvl 59)

  (Human Lvl 35)

“Now don’t move! You are surrounded,” The archer shouted. His face is grim, with lips tightening. His face and shaky voice betray his statement. Ruvick knew it had to be a lie, humans do not have the natural ability to sneak around like the Kobolds.

Ruvick moves, his body facing the archer. He pressed Nil against his chest, shielding his core. Vine slithers from Ruvick's hand, absorbing Nil Life essence just in case the archer would shoot.

His undead party move. If it is necessary.. Ruvick will fight them.

“Whoa! Okay, there might be no army surrounding you lot.” He admitted very quickly. “But our boss here just earned Dark Essence from slaying a Toothed Kobold! You stand no chance!”

“You idiot, lower your bow!” The girl shouted, glaring at the archer.

The archer's mouth gaped open at the girl. He stared at his boss, the big man with a grizzled expression, who looked like a bear who had transformed into a human.

He raised a hand, forming a fist.

The archer grinned, suddenly full of confidence. “All right, boss! Let-“

The boss punched the archer straight in his cheek. Sending him crashing toward the cave floor. His bow dropped, arrow clanked safely against the floor.

“Please accept his apology, Master Guardian,” The man said. His voice sounded like gravel. “My name is Guvikar, she is Sarel.”

The girl bowed her head to Ruvick in a hurry. She is still afraid of him.

“Mort! Apology!” Guvikor howled. His voice boomed through the cave.

Mort massaged his bruising cheek, he looked up at his boss with teary eyes. “But boss..”

“Did I not make myself clear, you fool?”

“Guvikor was it?” Ruvick spoke up. Guvikor's face shot to him, his face did not show any emotion, like a stone. “There’s no need for an apology. It's natural to be wary, especially in such a place.”

“You're a good guy?” Mort gaped. He knelt and then proceeded to prostrate himself to Ruvick. “Please accept my apology.”

Ruvick could swear he made out Yuu nodding in satisfaction.

“This is not necessary,” Ruvick muttered. But the man did not stop prostrating himself. “Very well, I accept your apology. Thank you for apologizing.”

Mort's eyes jolt up, and he wipes a tear. “You're a good guy after all!”
