The young maid hesitated, carefully considering the question before replying, “Over there… Seventh Miss, there used to be a house in that area, but it was burned down in a fire. As for the exact reason, this servant does not know. Since it was close to the Great General’s Manor, the house was quickly demolished and the nd leveled after the fire. Only a few scorched trees remain at the edges, but in another year, they will likely turn green again.”

Qin Shuying lifted her foot and walked in that direction.

Seeing that she was not heading to Feiqiong Courtyard, the maid felt reassured and let her go.

So, this was the secluded courtyard.

  Feng’er had died here.

  She had also died here.

The ground had been tidied, with flowers and pnts now growing where the house once stood. But traces of the old foundation were still faintly visible. Though it had been called a courtyard, it was merely three low and dipidated rooms. The roof had been in disrepair for years, leaking when it rained. Back then, Qin Yaoyao had been too preoccupied to bother with renovations. The pce was mostly used to store firewood and miscelneous items.

And she had been thrown here.

It was as if she could still hear Feng’er’s cries, his soft and sweet voice wailing in pain, “Mother! It hurts! Mother, it hurts so much…”

Tears welled up uncontrolbly and spilled down her face.

  “Miss…”

Ziteng immediately noticed Qin Shuying’s strange expression and gently tugged at her sleeve.

Qin Shuying closed her eyes, but the tears continued to pour, unable to be restrained.

Ziteng grew even more suspicious, but instead of questioning her, she stepped forward to block Qin Shuying from view and turned to the maid. “Sister, I seem to have left my handkerchief in the carriage. Would you be so kind as to fetch a clean one for me?”

The maid blinked in confusion before nodding, “Seventh Miss is here, so this servant will return shortly.”

Once the maid left, Ziteng stood quietly by Qin Shuying’s side.

Qin Shuying only allowed herself a brief moment to cry before forcing her tears back.

Feng’er, this mother will personally avenge you! I swear it! Wait for me!

A chilling, vengeful aura settled between her brows as her poisoned gaze fixated on the burned-down courtyard.

Just beyond the wall was the Great General’s Manor.

The part of the manor adjacent to the Lu Residence had a ke.

Floating aimlessly on the ke was a three-story pleasure boat.

What Qin Shuying did not expect was that, in the highest chamber of the boat, a young man dressed in blue was sitting with a cylindrical object in his hands, his eyes pressed against it as he observed in her direction.

Suddenly, the man paused, adjusted the device slightly, and focused the lens directly on Qin Shuying.

“Qin Shuying?” The young man in blue muttered to himself, watching her intently. “What’s this? Is she… crying?”

Though the image wasn’t entirely clear, it was still enough to make out the general scene.

Qin Shuying had no idea she was being observed. She stood there, staring bnkly at the site for a long time before finally withdrawing her gaze and returning the way she came with Ziteng and the maid.

The young man watched until her figure disappeared, then lowered the cylindrical device. It was a military tool, capable of seeing over long distances, known by some as a far-seeing mirror. However, it had its limits—beyond a certain distance, the images became blurry.

Even at their current separation of merely ten zhang, the device allowed him to barely make out Qin Shuying’s facial expressions. Without it, he wouldn’t have been able to see her features at all.

A thirteen or fourteen-year-old girl, capable of causing a great stir in Duke Chu’s residence, navigating the pace while retreating unscathed. Sharp-tongued, unafraid of Consort Lian, and even able to manipute Princess Fuping—who could she possibly fear?

Who had the power to make her shed tears?

This man in blue was Liang Zhe.

He stowed the far-seeing mirror away, intrigued.

After sitting in contemption for a moment, he called out, “Yan Jun!”

Immediately, a young man of seventeen or eighteen entered. He had striking features, an upright stance, and a swift yet steady gait. His eyes gleamed with sharp intelligence, clearly no ordinary individual.

  “Young Master!”

“There is something I want you to do—quietly. Do it alone.”

Liang Yanjun responded crisply, “Please instruct me, Young Master!”

“…There is a young dy in the residence across the way, named Qin Shuying, about thirteen or fourteen years old. Go investigate her.”

Liang Yanjun replied without hesitation, “Yes!”

He left promptly, while Liang Zhe casually picked up a book and began reading.

The sun shone brightly, the pleasure boat remained still upon the water, and the peaceful atmosphere was perfect for reading.

Sunlight cast sharp shadows on his finely chiseled profile, his expression both refined and profound.

After reading for a while, he set the book aside and once again picked up the far-seeing mirror, hoping to catch another glimpse of Qin Shuying. However, he could now only see the servants and guests moving about the Lu Residence.

Outside Feiqiong Courtyard, Lu ResidenceAs Qin Shuying walked back with the maid, she noticed charms and talismans discreetly pasted on the corners of the courtyard walls. She turned to the maid and asked, “What are these for?”

The maid replied, “After Young Madam returned from the Qin Residence st time, she became uneasy. The Old Madam requested these charms to be pced here, and since then, Young Madam has been able to sleep soundly.”

Qin Shuying thought for a moment and quickly understood.

They were trying to ward off Qin Yaoyao’s ghost.

It seemed the charms were effective. After Qin Feifei’s fright, she had still been able to give birth without complications—this must have provided her with a psychological sense of security.

  Qin Shuying smiled slightly.

When she stepped inside, she found Madam Xu and her daughters chatting and ughing.

She spoke up, “Third Sister, I noticed earlier that a house in the back courtyard had burned down. Maybe it was just my eyes pying tricks on me, but I think I saw a woman dressed in bck with red patterns.”

“What?!” Qin Feifei shrieked in terror.

Qin Shuying frowned slightly. “It’s strange. That night, after you returned home st time, I also dreamed of a woman in bck with red patterns. I couldn’t see her face—she was just crying endlessly. Third Sister, I have a question, but I hope you won’t think I’m prying.”

Qin Feifei, still in shock, blurted out, “W-what is it?”

Qin Shuying continued, “I just walked past the back courtyard and felt an eerie chill. I didn’t dare venture too far. Our Second Sister died there, burned alive in that courtyard. It was such a tragic death. Aren’t you afraid?”

“I’m not accusing anyone of anything, but I recall something from my time in the south with Father. There was a family where both the wife and grandson perished in a fire. The family was bold—they held a Taoist ritual, hired priests, and assumed all was well. They continued living in the same house.

“But not long after, the man’s concubine went mad. That man, once a minor official, soon lost his position due to a series of misfortunes.”

  Qin Feifei’s hands trembled uncontrolbly.

Madam Xu quickly pressed down on her daughter’s hands and said, “Seventh Girl, you must be mistaken. You’ve seen your Third Sister—let’s go to Cixin Hall.”

Qin Shuying nodded obediently and rose to leave. Before departing, she took another gnce around the room.

“This room has talismans, which should help ease the mind. Perhaps I was overthinking. If Third Sister ever has nightmares or feels uneasy, drinking talisman water might help.”

Once Qin Shuying left, Qin Feifei finally calmed down.

Earlier, her mother had told her about Qin Shuying’s audacity in the pace, and she could hardly believe it.

This Seventh Sister of hers—she wasn’t just strange. She was far too strange!

Where did she get such confidence?

Yet there was no time to dwell on Qin Shuying’s oddity. The mention of that bck-and-red figure and the eerie story had shaken her to her core.

How did she know Qin Feifei wasn’t sleeping well? How did she know she had been drinking talisman water?
