Watcher history lesson

After long rigorous exercises which span for several plinks. Sebastian and the others except for the elderly people were now able to stood under the watcher's gravity. Their next assignment were to learn about the Watcher history.

Sebastian sat on the front rows together with Enid. Firthe entered room before telling her companion there to lowered the gravity even more so Widodo and the other elderly people could be more comfortable.

She began her lesson about the 3 ancients space faring civilizations, they were Anrakyans who resembled human but with elongated face, Loricas the humanoid crustacean-like being, and weird slimy looking being called Ammunit. Their origins or how they met were mostly unrecorded.

"Anrakyan had more advanced technology than Loricas and Ammunit," explained Firthe "Forming an alliance was just to prevent war between those 3."

Thousands cycles later, 3 more space faring civilizations emerged. Durgari the humanoid with square head, Obliniad the fierce-looking green skin being, and Voidron the hairless white skin humanoid with slender body. The origins of the 3 races, as well as how they met were also unrecorded.

Firthe sighed "It was our biggest mistake, losing all those knowledge.."

With the new addition, they officially founded the predecessor of the Watcher called Muratu Vaal. They created rules and also standardized a calendar system known as cycles.

Firthe took a small circular device which has several lights forming rings "Each of these lights are called plink, 10 plinks formed a ring," she pointed at the light "a cycle is when 20 rings are formed, then the light will reset to count another cycle."

"So when the light reset, it’s like a new year?" asked a guy few rows behind Sebastian.

"A new year?" Firthe stared at him "I don't know what it is, but.. maybe, currently we are now in cycle 246 million."

She continued her lesson. The Muratu Vaal constructed a base inside an asteroid as their meeting place to discussed the galaxy affair, although later the base became their permanent home when all their home planet was lost to an unknown event.

For the next millions cycles, they mapped the whole galaxies together, but all of these came to an end when a deadly affliction was unknowingly brought back to the base and infected everyone there. It progressed slowly and by the time it was found, it was already too late. Everyone perished aside from Voidron, who managed to survives for the next thousands of cycles, long enough until they Durasyll and Lunluna.

"Is the disease still exist ma'am?" asked a little boy.

"Yes and deadly as ever," Firthe waved her finger "Don't worry, the whole planetary system was quarantined, and we have a cure."

Sebastian raised his hand "is there more of these dangerous planets?"

"You can read it later in the forbidden zone archives."

She clapped her hands and showed them pictures of Durasyll and Lunluna. Durasyll was the immortal tree-like being with a giant mushroom on their head. Their ancestors was the first deep space exploration team who returned from a long journey only to find their home already devoid of life. They left their barren home, searching for a new place to lived.

Lunluna the cat alien didn't have tail, also their hands and legs were more like human finger than cat paws. Their home planet was destroyed by their own technology. On their journey to find a new home, their ship began to break apart due to lacking spare parts. Fortunately Durasyll found them, and despite their inability to communicate, both decided to wanders the galaxy together.

After a thousand cycles finding a home together, they stumbled upon the Muratu Vaal base. They landed on the base hoping to find useful supplies, but instead they discovered Voidron survivors, sleeping inside their pods.

“Lunlunas began messing with the computer, and accidentally awakened some of the Voidrons. They had an awkward moments staring at each other until Saal Sa'lud the Muratu Vaal high elder at that time wore his universal translator device,” said Firthe.

He informed them about the affliction and urged them to leave the base as soon as possible, fearing they will get infected. But after seeing the data, Lunluna deduced they could make a cure, which was derived from Durasyll DNA. With it, they were able to successfully rid of the affliction, however it was too late for Voidron because it rendered them sterile. Lunluna tried their best but they were unable to find a solution to reversed condition, Voidrons however didn't mind with their new condition.

Lunluna later found out the cure useful side effects, like altering the recipient's gene. They tested it on themselves before re purposing it into an implant for the future members, which they will be receiving once they reached the base.

This unexpected news terrifies Sebastian and everyone. Firthe assured them it would be beneficial for them. The implant simply grew new internal organs that reinforced existing organs, preventing mutation, helped regulating body, and extending life. There was other rare effect such as Voidron who became an immortal like Durasyll.

"Before, our ancestor could only live for about 360 cycles, now we can live up to 2000 cycles."

Despite hearing all of that, everyone was still hesitant. Widodo and the other elderly people voiced their willingness to be the first to received the implant.

"With that sorted out, let's continue," she clasped her hands.

Voidron, Lunluna, and Durasyll rebuilt the Muratu Vaal, but they renamed it to Samvraa Naj'n or the Watcher of the Galaxy in human language. They began preparing to re-explored the galaxy, however at that time their technology was rather limited and they didn't have any spaceship that matched Anrakyan's ship traveling speed which hampered their progress. The Anrakyan's technology was too complicated and advanced even for their allies at that time.

"Only Obliniad grasped Anrakyan's technology, but they didn't bother to left any notes," said Corlal one of the Firthe's companion.

Despite the shortcoming, the Watcher was able to produced some of the alliance less advanced technology such as the universal translator and artificial gravity device.

Firthe took out a necklace under her clothes. "This is the universal translator device, each of you will receive this when we arrive at the base," she removed the necklace from her neck, "Alue eseu i e ma.." she wore it again "this instantly translate spoken words, although... it need to learn from the target civilization first, thus useless if there are none alive to be sampled."

Haron was next to joined. They were all in critical condition by the time the Watcher found their ship, they were exposed by the radiation from their star explosion. Lunluna managed to prevent the radiation from futher ravaging their body with the implant, but the damage was already too severe, it even permanently affecting their offspring. Since then, Haron had to live inside a medical pod until they reached maturity to undergoes a brain transplant into a mechanical body.

"We were next to joined," Firthe tapped her chest "our home... we never know what happened to it actually, our ancestor aimlessly wandered this galaxy until the watcher found us. This ship.. is the same ship our ancestor used to escape our planet."

She then showed them pictures of the metal spacesuit alien like Sannekth's companion "They are Zetron,"

Zetron was a living electrical energy, the metal spacesuit was the robotic vessel they controlled. They were originated from Lam’a zetro region, where they lived inside a cosmic cloud. Zetron ancestor was lacking intelligence which prompted the Watched team to leave the cosmic cloud. Unbeknownst to them, several Zetrons were sneaked inside their ship.

The team returned to the base, carrying the stowaway. They took controls of the base computers, causing a chaos. However, they didn't just controlled it, they quickly learned and created their own basic language, enabling them to communicated with the Watcher. They were inducted after high elder deemed them to advanced to be returned back to their home.

Firthe skipped to an event million of cycles later, when a race called Rachnite appeared on the outskirts of this galaxy. Despite the Watcher's efforts, Rachnite invaded and consumed every worlds on their path.

"They looks scary.." a girl whimpered

She was right Sebastian thought, Rachnite looked like a giant beetle with large mandibles, they also had a pair of menacing scythe-like forearms.

"Don't you have any weapon?" asked a boy.

"At that time we only had non lethal as per our rules dictated, and we lacked experience in warfare," Firthe explained "Our intention was to communicates with them, which didn't end well.. they also outnumbered us, and.. their ships were much more advanced than ours."

Gypherian the hunchbacked bird alien was one of the Rachnite's victim, but despite their inferior technology they were able to resisted the invasion for a while before being overwhelmed and forced to abandoned their planet with the Watcher assistance. Despite the initial plan was to relocating them to a new planet, Ghyperian beseeches to be allowed to join the war effort.

"Watcher rule, we are only suppose to recruits a space faring civilizations. Gypherian however was a special case, they were rather primitive without any technology to leave their planet, but high elder Sa'lud admired their conviction and allowed them to join."

For the next hundred cycles, every watcher attempt to subdued the Rachnite always ended in failure. They finally got their chances when they arrived at a region called Sulkar Va'as, where an unknown fleet of spaceships outmaneuvered and defeated the larger Rachnite fleet.

They were the Garbitian, a once warlike civilization, which was the reason of their planet destruction, due to their own civil wars.

"These 8 Garbitian clans were the peaceful elements of their race that managed to escape their doomed world," said Firthe "They agreed to lend their expertise in exchanged for a new home."

With the Garbitian aiding them, they boarded the Rachnite's main spaceship where they met the Rachnite Queen. The queen refused their attempts for diplomacy and attacked them instead, causing a huge casualties among boarding party, High elder Sa'lud was among them. The survivors had no other choice but to slain the queen.

With their queen demise, Rachnite stopped their aggression. It turns out Rachnite was actually a peaceful being. The queen enslaved and controlled them, using them as tools to conquered the universe. Her ravenous appetite had consumed their galaxy a long time ago. Saal Su'ud, who at that time taken the mantle as the new high elder, took pity of them and offered Rachnite to joined the Watcher despite the protests from Gypherians.

"Don't worry, Gypherian had long forgiven Rachnite, and 3 of the Garbitian clans decided to join us."

  "Only 3?" asked Rob.

"The other clans, while skilled in the art of war, are more of merchant and farmer, these 3 were adventurer and hunter clans" she explained "Hesus, Sasus and Orsus. Each of these clans have their own unique characteristics, Sannekth, Gersoth and Ammaurith are members of the Hesus clan, you might had seen the Sasus clan members, there are 4 on Pigen's team, the Gypherian who transported your kin."

"What happened to the other clans?" Travis raised asked.

"Until now they still lives in their home at Amu Sa'ah star system."

Firthe clapped her hands "And.. that concluded our history lesson." she told them to took some rest until the next plink.

At the next plink. Firthe taught them about their duties as a Watcher. Their most important task was to traveled the galaxy and recorded every species they encountered. Interfering with the growth or demise of primitive civilizations were prohibited.

"Unless they were invaded by another civilization from a different planet," said Firthe "then we are allowed to intervenes."

Their other duty was to be a mediator between the space faring civilization that were not part of the Watcher.

"Currently there are 5, you might encounters them in the future," she explained.

  "Are they friendly?" Sebastian asked.

"Only the Garbitian empire. The others are rather unpleasant, but Sardasian in particular is supercilious, i hate dealing with them, urgh.. remembering that time, If only father didn’t stop me from punching that Shoink’s face," She swinging her fist violently, she stopped after seeing everyone was looking at her with surprised expression. "Uhumm.. let's continue."

Corlal chuckled "I remembered, they called you mini-"

Firthe told him to get out which made the whole room laughed, she glared at them until they stopped laughing and continued with her lesson.

Their other duty was to recruits new member, those who lost or left their home planet. They will be observed for a few plinks. If deemed unworthy will still be led to a new home planet in secret while also destroying all of their technologies. After Rachnite incident, the high elder Su'ud added a new rule which if unworthy candidate was deemed too dangerous for this galaxy, they had no choice but to be terminated.

After resting for another plink, Firthe taught them about the Watcher's technologies, such as the Joturghur generator, which was an improvement over Anrakyan Jeturgh generator.

"It was a contained miniature star, capable generating a near limitless energy," she explained.

It was Rachnite who reverse engineered the Anrakyan's technology, before being enslaved by their queen, they were a civilization of tinkerer and inventor. They also created a much more powerful propulsion system which surpassed even the Anrakyan, as well as the new shielding technology called au'ruru, the blue curtain-like light enveloping this ship.

Sebastian asked Firthe how they were able to hold tools with their scythe. She showed them the close up of the Rachnite body, which revealed another set of hidden forearms that had fingers on it.

"That's the end of my lesson, there are about 10 rings left before we reach our base," Firthe waving her finger "in the mean time, you are free to do whatever you want."

They all thanked her for the lessons. For the next 10 rings, Sebastian spent his free time to further learn more about the Watcher together with Enid.
