07. A Life for A Life

  Friday, September 19.

  Free Wilderness, Saigon City.

  Nameless Small Mechanical Ruin.

  ..

  Characters:

Sapasa, an 18-year-old yellow-clad and yellow-haired girl with depression.

Witiivi, a 17-year-old cute and charming white-clad and white-haired girl.

  ..

Witiivi has been eager to kill, carefully selecting several targets.

But when it comes to the final moment, she can never bring herself to do it.

Half a year has passed, and she still hasn’t passed the second stage of the professional assassin trial.

Sapasa has finally turned eighteen, the date she’d planned to commit suicide.

  ..

  Sapasa:

"I knew you couldn’t do it.

  To kill someone.

  One life for another:

  Kill one to save one.

You can’t trade another’s life for mine."

  ..

  Witiivi:

  "I can do it.

  Just give me more time.

I killed my grandparents, then my parents.

After becoming an orphan, I was adopted six times.

Then I killed twelve adoptive parents.

  I’ve caused so many deaths.

I should be able to kill."

  ..

  Sapasa:

"That’s your subconscious hypnotic ability going out of control.

Your subconscious hypnotized them into committing suicide.

It wasn’t your conscious self taking their lives.

  So you’re innocent.

You don’t need to blame yourself."

  ..

  Witiivi:

  "I was born bad.

  I’m not a good person.

I’ve trained in the assassin heritage for years.

  I’m a prodigy assassin.

Why can’t I just kill someone?"

  ..

  Sapasa:

  "Human consciousness has ten layers.

The conscious self is in the first layer.

The subconscious is in the third.

Morals and ethics reside in the consciousness of the second layer.

The subconscious has no concept of morality.

Your subconscious killing has nothing to do with your conscious self.

  Your conscious self is good."

  ..

  Witiivi:

"Why does my subconscious go out of control?

  Why can’t I master it?"

  ..

  Sapasa:

"I heard only rune masters can control the subconscious."

  ..

  Witiivi:

"I need to learn rune science.

I will become a rune master.

  I will control my subconscious."

  ..

  Sapasa:

  "Rune masters are legendary figures.

Not something we poor people can ever access.

  You’re a genius, yes.

Even if you’re a prodigy in rune science.

You still have no way to learn it.

  Because we’re poor."

  ..

  Witiivi:

"The poor don’t get to choose their profession.

  Damned fate.

  So unfair to us."

  ..

  Sapasa:

"When has fate ever been fair to the poor?

  That’s why I’ll never compromise."

  ..

  Sapasa:

  "Just kill me.

If you don’t, I’ll kill myself anyway.

I’d be satisfied to die by your hand."

  ..

  Witiivi:

  "I can’t."

  ..

  Sapasa:

"Rather than both of us struggling in poverty.

You should break free from this cursed fate alone.

  Kill me.

Pass the trial, become a professional assassin."

  ..

  Witiivi:

"Why do you have to commit suicide?"

  ..

  Sapasa:

"When my mother got sick, she refused treatment.

She spent all her savings on an artificial womb for me.

The day I was born in that womb, she peacefully committed suicide.

Before she died, she left a message on my info bracelet:

  If I couldn’t escape poverty.

I should end my life on my 18th birthday.

I’ve watched the video of her peaceful death since childhood.

Maybe that’s where my depression comes from?"

  ..

  Witiivi:

  "Maybe your mother was right?

  I shouldn’t be alive either.

If I’d died earlier, so many lives could’ve been saved."

  ..

  Sapasa:

  "Stop blaming yourself.

  You’re innocent.

We poor have no reason to compromise with fate.

Better to say goodbye to this world with dignity.

Than to scrape by in humiliation."

  ..

  Witiivi:

  "Fine, I’ve decided.

  I can’t give you a bright life.

But I can make your death breathtakingly beautiful.

After all, I’m a prodigy assassin.

  My killing techniques are unparalleled."
