Deities - High Rank, often Gods and Goddesses. They often have an ego (as in psychology; a concept of the self)
For example, a Flower Deity could have a personal concept of self that includes a gender representation.
Spirits - Considered lower ranking than deities. They are more often driven by a sole core concept and are less humanized.
For example, a Spirit of Flowers would be more commonly referred to as “it” rather than “he” “she” “they” etc.
In order to move up from a Spirit to a Deity, a full-fledged ego must be developed and powers must be comparable to other deities’ level.
Without an ego, Spirits would generally not be able to comprehend the concept of a Deity entirely and would not deserve the rank. For example, a spirit of war would desire war and pursue it when it occurs (think Freud’s ID - base, animalistic desire). A deity of war would be able to manipute humans into creating war as well as have pns outside of war, such as maintaining peace among soldiers of a single faction to increase their fighting strength.
In order to confirm that a Spirit is powerful enough to be elevated to the rank of Deity, Spirits must challenge and defeat a Deity. The stronger a Spirit’s core concept, the more power they will possess. For example, a spirit of the hearth could have strong core concept having dwelled among and protected the hearth of human homes for centuries.
Deities tend to be older than spirits as they spawn from more prominent and more important concepts. The longer they exist, the more power they accumute, assuming their concept remains relevant to living human societies. This relevance is what makes the Holy Imanjar concept appealing to Deities and Spirits: having humans work your will in the world makes your concept more prevalent and thus increases your power. This pays back in dividends versus other methods that only provide one small increase (swallowing souls, defeating and absorbing the concepts of weaker spirits, etc.) and are often more dangerous. More powerful Deities grant stronger powers and grant more complicated wishes in order to attract stronger, more impressive humans to become Holy Imanjar.
