Chapter 7: Supercharged Jump

Alone in the vast soccer field, Ven took a deep breath before punching the air with precision. It felt like a regular punch, did the impact really have super strength? Frustrated, Ven then punched the air numerous times

He sighed before looking at his fist. All of those punches just felt like regular punches, just how could he bring out his super strength on command? He did it before against the speeding villain, why couldn’t he do it again? He paced back in forth as he ran his hands through his dreaded head with deep annoyance. Other emergees seem to have a way easier time unleashing their abilities, but for Ven it seemed more difficult than trigonometry.

Is it possible that I can only release my superpowers at certain times? Ven thought as he came to a holt. That would be a disaster, what superhero could be a hero only sometimes?

He put his hand on his chin. There’s got to be a way to use my powers.

He pondered to when he fought Choi, what made that moment special enough to where his super strength was unleashed? Was it desperation, or was it simply a change in mindset? He remembered what he was imagining when he first slugged the speedster villain. He wanted to protect his mother and he believed he could. Belief - Was it true that complete belief was the only requirement? Was he simply not “believing enough?” If that were true, how could he condition his mind to believe he could actually use his ability, as superpowers weren’t exactly ordinary. Did everyone who used their powers have complete belief every time they unleashed their stellar techniques? It was worth a shot trying the whole thing out.

He extended his fist once more, channeling his belief into the next impending strike. He closed his eyes while trying to convince himself that the next punch would be electrified with extraordinary power. With a deep inhale, he infused his fist with an strong force that appeared to be building. Now it would work… he just knew it. He gritted his teeth and unleashed a brutal punch, which sent a seismic wave rippling through the warm air. The strong impact caused the colossal stadium lights to flicker.

Ven smiled as he watched the flickering lights. It seemed that all he did was believe he actually had superpowers and then focused his energy into his fist. Now he finally knew how to unleash his superpowers, it was a very simple yet effective mechanic. Just what would happen if he focused his energy to other parts of his body?

He took another deep breath and focused everything he had into his legs, trying to channel the same strength he’d felt earlier in his fist. For a moment, nothing happened, then suddenly, power surged through him like a lightning bolt. His body shot upward with unbelievable force, rocketing past the stadium lights and soaring high above the convention center.

The view hit him all at once—city lights stretching for miles, tiny cars crawling below, the sky around him open and endless. A laugh escaped him, as he stretched his arms wide in the air. He hadn’t expected to get this high, and for a second, it felt like he could stay up there forever. The wind whipped past his face, sharp and cold, but it only made the moment feel more real… more alive.

The view was nice and all, but there was only one problem… How would he get down? His excitement quickly turned into panic as he slowly began to descent from the limitless sky. How was he going to stop the impact? The closer he got to the ground, the more he realized how hopeless his situation truly was. He closed his eyes and braced for impact.

Here we go,His anxiety shot through the roof the more seconds passed, uncertainty was gripping him in its icy embrace.

A loud thud was unleashed into the atmosphere when Ven hit the hard soccer field. The impact created a somewhat small crater, it was as if he was a miniature meteor of some sort.

Well that wasn’t funthought Ven as he struggled to rise back to his feet. Pain was surrounding him, but surprisingly, the huge impact didn’t hurt near as much as he thought it would. He placed his hand on his anxious heart as he waited for his racing heart rate to go down. Falling from the sky was the most nerve-racking thing ever.

After recovering from his glorious fall, Ven practiced swinging his super strength filled punches until he became delirious and depleted. He punched the air so many times that it felt like he could barely feel his fatigued arms. It seemed that the longer he used his powers consecutively, the more tired he became.

Afterwards, Ven focused his energy into his legs once more and tried to jump again. The next jump wasn’t nearly as high as the previous enormous jump. He then wondered if he could jump again immediately after landing on the ground.

Once more, he jumped with super strength, and as he landed, he unleashed another powerful jump, propelling himself onto the roof of the convention center. Laughing with exhilaration, he gazed at the brilliantly lit city of Amani in the distance. If it only took two jumps to get on top of a tall building then there was no limit to what he could do. He could jump around the entire city.

Ven soared in the sky like a hungry eagle fixated on its prey. The wind in his face was absolutely mind blowing. The numerous people walking the streets below only appeared to be specks on a paper. It was hard to imagine how much his life changed in only a matter of days.

After learning that he could get around easily by jumping platform to platform, he figured he’d hone his jumping abilities in the beautiful city of Amani—the almost dusk skies beautifully complimented its surreal buildings. From building to building, Ven launched himself even greater into the air until he was greeted by enormous skyscrapers. Tentatively, he placed his power-infused foot on one of the tall structures, though he feared it might crumble under his strength. To his relief, the skyscraper held firm. How powerful were these constructions, anyway? He continued leaping, still exhilarated by his newfound abilities.

If super strength enabled him to get around so quickly, it would be a significant asset in becoming an esteemed superhero. Rapidly arriving at the scene to save the day would not only be beneficial but also make for a fantastic news coverage, as would his land-shaking punches against villains. The faster he could master his powers, the sooner he could live out his dreams of superhero stardom.

Ven sighted a large white building and leapt towards it, upon landing on it, he attempted to shoot himself to the next building, but his legs suddenly gave out - the super strength now appeared to be gone.

Ven shuttered with hysteria, as he began to slowly descend to the concrete floor. He knew people were below him, but he was falling too fast to see if he’d fall on anyone. All he could do was brace for impact and hope nobody would get hurt. The last thing he wanted to do was plunge to the ground again, but it appeared he did not have a choice.

  Here we go again.

He hit the ground hard once more. Pain quickly echoed throughout his entire core as he felt his ears pop. He focused through his blurry vision to see a small wave of citizens staring at him in astonishment.

“Are you okay!?” A passing man asked.

Ven focused on the people staring at him as he rose to his feet, holding his side in pain. They were likely obviously puzzled to see someone suddenly plunge to the ground.

“Shouldn’t we run or call the police or something? He’s an emergee isn’t he?” A concerned man echoed.

“Of course not! He doesn’t look like an emergee to me,” a woman answered.

“He fell from the sky and he’s still alive! What do you mean he doesn’t look like an emergee?”

  “Hm… I guess you’re right.”

Dr. Tiba’s words suddenly began to cycle through Ven’s mind. “Don’t worry guys, I’m fine,” said Ven nervously as he began to lightly jog away from the scene. “Nobody’s in danger here.”

“Huh!? Don’t you need a doctor or something?”

“No worries I’m fine!” Don’t need those anymore.

Ven slowly wobbled away from the scattered people. The pain began to immediately fade away, he wondered if the super strength caused him to feel less pain than average. He glanced back behind him and noticed the numerous citizens glancing at him with deep puzzlement before they slowly began to clear out.

After aimlessly walking, he glanced around his surroundings and saw he was in downtown Amani’s Lunar Square, probably the most lively spot of the city. Even though it wasn’t quite night time yet, many people were still walking on the sidewalks. It was like being in a loud circus, as the music was also so loud that it shuttered throughout his entire body. He had never seen so many people in one place before. People were walking in and out of restaurants, bars, and various other establishments. He doubted anyone in that loud area heard him fall from the sky two miles away.

He pondered about the last time he went to downtown Amani. It was for a field trip at an aquarium, the days then were so chill and exquisite, what he wouldn’t do to go back to those days—but then again, with his new superpowers his days should get better.

The people around him were dressed in flashy attire and they appeared to be from all around the globe. Most of them appeared to be wealthy Baharians, as their elegant clothing and unique hairstyles gave them away. Ven himself was dressed in a black jacket and blue jeans, his basic attire almost didn’t match the place (even though he was the most wealthy due to his mother’s wealth).

He noticed a lot of police officers and two peculiar individuals by them. Judging by their attire, the two individuals were likely legally registered superheroes with the Hero Brunch. It was not uncommon for superheroes to work alongside police officers. The heroes and the police were likely just patrolling the area, as alcohol, people, and the moon didn’t tend to create a great combination.

He didn’t recognize the two heroes so they were likely low ranked heroes. Regardless of their rank, that’s where he had to be. Becoming a legally registered hero was near his grasp, all he had to do was pass the Hero Brunch tests and he’d be in the clear.

As he continued his walk, a sudden wave of anxiety hit him like a truck. Was it the roaring music, or was it the sea of noisy pedestrians? He felt the butterflies in his stomach grow larger and larger, just where was it coming from? The ringing in his ears and his elevated heart rate further filled his panic. His mind then betrayed him and began to whisper nonsense into his ears. It told him that he was still sick, and that he could never be like all of the people he saw around him.

He quickly darted away from the Lunar square like a madman. He almost bumped to many people, who glanced back at him with confused eyes. He probably looked like a crazy person to the nearby people, but they didn’t know that his fear of public spaces was likely a result of PTSD induced by medical trauma. Just how would he get rid of it? Maybe therapy wouldn’t be a bad thing after all.
