We’re traveling again! We left Potat this morning, and are now in a town called Deep. We don't have any work here, so tomorrow morning we’ll continue on our way to the town of Feetsville. We just happened to get here around dinner time, and decided to stay.
Deep is a mining town. There are tunnels nearby that go deep into the mountain.
Yes, this is a kobold town. It’s strange to me that they built it above-ground, but the innkeeper said it’s not strange to him. And he lives here, so, yeah. What do I know?
It’s kinda cool, really. I mean, neko architecture tends to be wood-based, but kobolds build out of stone. Seeing how they put things together to make multiple-story buildings is kinda interesting. If I knew anything about how to build a house, I’d probably have a couple insightful things to say.
But I don’t. So I’ll just say it’s cool, and leave it at that.
At dinner tonight there was a group of guys in the diner, so I asked if they were miners. They said they were. And then I asked if anything weird has been going on underground. They… kinda got a bit technical, but what I gathered was that the temperature in the mines is going up. Which isn’t a good thing. I suggested they should tell the mayor about that, but they shrugged it off. They don’t think it’s anything super important.
And they’d know best. It is their mine, after all.
A part of me feels like I should report that. It’s important information that someone smart and important should know. I’m a part of the Traveler’s Guild, and in my travels I’m discovering that the ground is bad. Someone needs to make it not bad. Someone who isn’t me.
Well, there was another little earthquake today. Surely someone has noticed that there’ve been two earthquakes in two days, and is investigating. I’m probably not the only person who has talked to animals and heard a bunch of “ground bad” reports.
Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit.
Right? Right.
Maybe I should ask Maeve what to do. She’s been kinda distracted lately, tho.
Or I could ask Maki. He was in the guard, he knows about dangerous things.
…Luke wouldn’t be helpful or know what to do, probably.
Or… I could go to the mayor here? Well, kobolds don’t have mayors, they have lords. But yeah, the person in charge. They’d know if this was a serious issue that needed to be handled somewhere else.
Tomorrow morning before we head out I can ask to go talk to the town’s lord real quick. If everyone wants to just leave, then I’ll have tried my best. Yeah, that sounds reasonable.
Here’s hoping the world doesn't explode before tomorrow morning.
Signing off,

The Watcher of Tiros slowly ate a spoonful of frosting, squinting at her options.
- Do nothing.
- Send a memo to churches, warning them.
- Fix the problem and hope no one notices.
- Tell chosen kids their job is now to save everyone from volcanic doom.
The first option was out. Bonnie was fairly hands-off as far as gods went, but letting something happen that might wipe out most of her world’s population was too hands-off.
The second option was tempting. The new generation wasn't as churchgoing as their parents, and it might be good to prove why that was a bad idea.
Option three was… no longer possible. People were noticing, and things were being done. She could reduce the problem, shave the continent a bit to make the snap less dramatic, but fixing everything completely without saying anything would just raise questions. More importantly, she wouldn't get any credit for anything.
Which left the fourth option. Bonnie currently had seven Chosen Ones running around, and only one was actually doing something for her. Three weren't anywhere near the problem area, but the rest were perfectly positioned to help.
Ok. Time for a conference.
…Just as soon as she decided exactly what she wanted them to do. And finished her tub of frosting.
