Chapter 186 – Family meeting

Sophia and Maya went to the capital to pick up the cat-girl's parents to have them meet the sisters' parents. Theo and Eve were a little reluctant to go through the portals at first, but after finding out they could meet the family of their future daughter-in-law, all concerns stopped mattering, and they eagerly agreed to come with them.

“Oh, this looks a lot more homely!” The group took the portal to their cottage, and Eve liked the cozy feel in the entrance hall they were in at the moment.

“That is true.” Theo nodded. “I can see how you’d prefer to return here for the night while traveling rather than camping in the middle of nowhere.

“Camping can be fun, though!” Sophia didn’t entirely agree. “Great when it’s raining or colder, that is definitely true!”

“Having to sleep outside when it’s cold sounds like the worst!” Eve, a fellow cat, had the exact same feeling on the matter.

  “Exactly!”

“Okay, time to meet the family!” Maya’s mother then excitedly clapped her hands.

“Sure~.” Smiling at her, the blonde then guided them to the living room.

“Ohh!” The moment the door opened, Lydia jumped off the sofa on which she and her husband were sitting while talking with Steph. “You must be Maya’s parents, right? My name’s Lydia, and I’m the mother of Sophia and Steph. It’s so nice to meet you!” She immediately introduced herself upon seeing them. She was just as excited about it as Eve was.

“The pleasure is all mine!” Eve energetically shook her hand. “I am so glad that we were able to meet in the end. After learning more about Sophia’s background, I hadn't thought this would ever be possible. It’s amazing that this little wonder worked out! I am Eve, by the way, and this is my husband Theo.”

“Hello!” He lightly waved his hand in return.

“Just like my wife said, we are also delighted to be able to meet you. My name is Pete, and I'm Steph's father and Sophia's stepfather. That said, I've been with her since her birth."

“He’s only biologically not my father.” The tiger smiled at him. “In every other way, he is, though.”

"Thank you." He was glad to hear it. "Again, it is great that we're able to meet her girlfriend's family, although the circumstances are rather difficult, to say the least. We weren't expecting to be in a different world today.”

“Ahaha, true.” Theo let out a small chuckle. “It’s not that different for us as we aren’t exactly home, either.”

“Well, at least you already knew about magic beforehand.” Pete scratched his cheek. “We’ve only seen our daughters using it a few times while not understanding anything in the slightest. Having used that to go to a different world is mindboggling.”

“Oh, no, I think you’re misunderstanding something there.” Maya’s father shook his head a couple of times. “While magic is an everyday occurrence for us, Sophia’s magic is not. The way she uses it goes against everything we know. In fact, it might be even more mindboggling for us because magic’s not supposed to work in the way it does for her.”

“She’s like a personified destroyer of common sense.” Eve reacted with a big nod.

“Mhmm.” Sophia’s parents stared at the tiger.

“I am not destroying common sense; I am improving it.” She stared back at them. “Magic’s a lot more complex than is known in the world, so I want others to understand that they’re limiting themselves!”

“I see.” They kept it at that.

“Anyway, it’s time for you three to leave.” Lydia then looked at her daughters and Maya.

“Good idea!” Eve liked the plan.

  “Why?!” The trio didn’t, however.

“We parents need to get to know each other better. Without the interferences of others.”

  “Exactly.” Maya’s mother nodded along.

  “But!”

“Parents only.” All four now shook their heads.

  “Fine…” They gave up.

“Let’s go, Sari!” Saying so, Sophia walked over to Steph and picked up their baby sister, who had been sleeping cradled against the dog-girl’s lap until now.

“Sari’s staying here.” Lydia glared at her.

“Nu-uh.” The tiger just shook her head. “Parents only.” Sticking out her tongue, she promptly walked out of the room. “Let’s show you around, Sari!”

“She won this round.” Steph smiled at her mother before following after her sister.

“I’ll make sure they do nothing out of the ordinary.” Maya awkwardly scratched her cheek while sheepishly glancing at Lydia before she also left the room.

  “Haa…”

  ----------------

“How old is Sari?” Watching the girls leave, Eve got curious about the baby.

  “10 months.”

“Wow!” She seemed impressed. “Such a good sleeper at such a young age? My kids were the exact opposite!”

“Yes.” Lydia nodded. “I, or we’ve been blessed with incredibly low-maintenance children in that regard.” She smiled at her husband. “Sophia and Steph were the same as babies. Both turned rather rowdy while growing up, though.”

“Ours were rowdy since the day they were born.” Eve nodded along.

“Rather, they were born rowdy and only built up on that while getting older.” Theo had to add a slight correction to her words.

“Very true!” She could see where his addition was coming from. "Well, kids will be kids, and it's best to let them do their thing. Though, we maybe should’ve given Maya and Luca a few more boundaries when growing up…”

“We also made some mistakes.” Lydia awkwardly scratched her cheek. “Especially when it comes to Sophia… We weren’t able to support her nearly enough when she was going through a rough time.”

“Really?” Theo tilted his head. “Yes, Sophia’s a little eccentric, but she’s such a lovable, caring, helpful, friendly, and outgoing girl! It doesn’t seem like she was ever lacking anything.”

“It’s all thanks to your daughter that she looks that way now.” Lydia smiled at him. “Sophia told me that Maya’s the one who helped her out of her rut and shaped her into the outgoing girl she now is. Thank you for raising such an amazing person.”

“Our idiot?” Maya’s parents perfectly synced up.

“Yes.” Sophia’s mother nodded. “She’s the one who restored her confidence.”

“Well, putting it that way, I can see it.” Theo thought about it for a second. “If Maya’s one thing, it’s her being overly confident.”

“Okay, good point.” Eve thought so, too. “She easily had enough confidence for two people.”

“I think Maya’s a lot more than just confident.” Lydia thought they were selling her short. “I only met her today, but my impression of her is super positive.”

“Indeed!” Pete felt the same. “Such a sweet and humble girl! It’s quite the difference from our Steph, especially. It was adorable how shy and bashful she was about meeting us, too. It’s rare for someone to be as well-behaved as her.”

“Huh?” Theo and Eve looked flabbergasted. “Our daughter? The pure white cat from earlier?”

  “Yes.” The two nodded.

  “Hah.” Their confusion only grew.

“She really did her best when meeting them, huh?” Eve glanced at her husband.

“Very much so.” He looked back at her. “She’s our baby and we love her, but… We have many positive adjectives to describe her, but those are usually not the first ones that come to mind when it comes to our Maya.”

“Well, that’s the same how we feel about Sophia’s description you gave us earlier.” Lydia let out a small chuckle. “She undoubtedly changed from the girl we knew to the better, but whenever Steph updates us on her, she also uses other descriptions for her sister. All of them are also of the lovely kind, but very different indeed.”

“They were trying to impress their partners' parents, huh?" Pete let out a small chuckle. “Though, to be fair, I’m sure we all did that in the past. I certainly did.”

“That is quite fair.” Eve could follow his logic.

“We’ve met Sophia before she knew we were Maya’s parents, though. “Theo shook his head. “She ran into us when we were lost in the capital and insisted on helping us with no questions asked. She was super sweet and courteous the whole time while making sure we’d get home.”

“True!” His wife nodded. "She behaved similarly before and after finding out who we were. Though, she may have gotten even sweeter afterward, so Pete’s words are certainly not wrong.”

“To be fair, she has always been sweet.” Lydia looked at her husband. “Her social anxiety of the past just made her unable to live it out most of the time because she was unable to talk with strangers.”

“Social anxiety? Sophia?” Eve was the most confused yet. “She’s known by everyone in the entire capital of the beastfolk as the blonde tiger who loves to be in the center of attention. Everyone loves her for that because she's such a likable girl, but it’s common knowledge that she’d die without enough attention given.”

“…” The tiger’s parents stared at each other in disbelief. “We need to be here more often.” They started to feel like they were missing out on too much.

“You are more than welcome!” Theo and Eve smiled at them.

Afterward, Sophia’s parents needed a bit of a break to let those new insights about their daughter sink in.
