Chapter 48: The Queen’s Invitation

The throne room of Valthor was dimly lit, the golden chandeliers casting long shadows across the cold marble floor. Kael sat upon the high throne, his fingers tapping idly against the armrest. The room, once a pce of sycophants and weak-willed nobles, now carried an air of dominance. His dominance.

Eine stood beside him, her expression unreadable, though Kael knew her well enough to sense the quiet storm brewing beneath her composed exterior. She had spent the past few days ensuring the city remained in order, but tonight’s event had her on edge.

The invitation had come wrapped in silver silk, the wax seal unbroken until it reached Kael’s hands. The Queen of Eldoria, Isolde, had formally invited him to her court. It was both a challenge and a test—one that Kael had no intention of failing.

"She wouldn’t invite you if she wasn’t intrigued," Eine said at st, breaking the silence.

Kael smirked. "Intrigue is the first step toward control."

Eine crossed her arms. "Is that what you intend to do? Control her?"

Kael leaned back slightly. "No. I intend to make her see that the only path forward is at my side."

Eine scoffed. "Easier said than done. Isolde isn’t just some noblewoman pying at power. She’s ruled Eldoria without a king for years, and none have dared try to cim her throne. She’s untouchable."

Kael tilted his head. "Untouchable? No one is untouchable, Eine. Everyone has a weakness."

Eine sighed, knowing there was no changing his mind. "Then let’s just hope she doesn’t find your weakness first."

The next evening, Kael set out for Eldoria. The journey was swift, his convoy moving like a shadow across the nd. Unlike his predecessors, he did not travel with a grand army or a dispy of excessive power. That would be seen as a threat. Instead, he brought only his most trusted guards, a small group meant to show confidence rather than intimidation.

Eldoria was unlike any kingdom Kael had seen before. The city was a masterpiece of architecture, built upon ancient ruins that still whispered of forgotten gods. Ivory towers stretched toward the sky, and the streets were lined with violet nterns that bathed everything in an ethereal glow. It was a city that exuded beauty and danger in equal measure.

The Queen’s pace was no different. A fortress wrapped in elegance, designed to entrance and intimidate at the same time. As Kael entered the grand hall, all eyes turned to him. Nobles whispered behind silk fans, and masked courtiers observed him with veiled curiosity.

  And then, there she was.

Queen Isolde sat upon her throne, a vision of absolute sovereignty. Her golden hair cascaded over one shoulder, her emerald eyes sharp and calcuting. She was dressed in deep sapphire, a gown that accentuated both her regal presence and the sheer confidence with which she held herself.

"Lord Kael," she greeted, her voice smooth as silk yet carrying an undeniable edge. "I see you accepted my invitation."

Kael inclined his head slightly, offering a smile that did not quite reach his eyes. "How could I refuse when the most powerful queen in the empire calls?"

Her lips curved into something resembling amusement. "Fttery does not impress me, Lord Kael. Power does."

Kael stepped forward, his gaze never leaving hers. "Then you’ll be pleased to know that I did not come here to ftter you."

A brief silence fell over the hall. The nobles watched with bated breath, eager to see how their queen would respond to such boldness.

Then, Isolde did something unexpected. She smiled.

"Good," she murmured. "Then let’s talk."
