26. Golden Bait

The chamber opened before them, its ceiling soaring high—a stark contrast to the cramped tunnels. But what caught Riven's attention wasn't the space itself. It was the ceiling.

A thick mesh of roots bore hundreds of golden buds hanging like heavy fruit. Some small as his fist, others swollen to the size of a child's head, pulsing with steady light. The lowest hung just above head height, close enough he could feel their warmth.

Their amber glow transformed the chamber, softening harsh edges, turning black stone almost beautiful.

Riven stepped closer to one of the lower buds. Its surface was smooth, polished to a mirror finish. He could see his reflection—the sharp angles of his jaw, the violet glow of his eyes.

Across the chamber, Aron and Lya had also been drawn to the buds, their faces upturned in wonder.

Something tightened in Riven's chest. Not pain, exactly—more like pressure. A familiar sensation he'd learned to trust.

  Instinct. Warning him.

His grip tightened on his sword hilt. His eyes swept the chamber again, searching for whatever had triggered his unease. Nothing seemed immediately threatening. The buds hung motionless except for their gentle pulsing. The chamber was silent save for their own breathing and the soft scrape of their boots against stone.

It's probably nothing. We've seen these buds before, just not in these numbers.

But the feeling persisted, nagging at the edges of his awareness.

Riven closed his eyes briefly, focusing inward. He reached for that warm coal behind his sternum, drawing on its power. With a thought, he channeled his Koras to activate his Spatial eyes. The familiar sensation spread through his skull as his perception expanded, creating a sphere of awareness that extended outward from his body in all directions.

He intensified it, pushing more Koras into the field to sharpen his perception. The chamber came into focus in a different way—not visual, but spatial. He could sense the contour of the walls, the twist of the roots overhead, and the golden bud hanging from the ceiling.

Nothing seemed amiss at first. The buds were exactly what they appeared to be—strange growths filled with the same energy that powered their fragments.

Then he sensed it—a subtle change in the ceiling directly above where Lya stood. The roots there shifted slightly, a movement so small it would have been imperceptible to normal sight.

His hand tightened around his sword hilt. He focused his entire attention on that spot, not yet certain if the movement was just the natural settling of the roots or something more sinister.

A second later, he had his answer. Something moved—quick but distinct. Something organic and alive.

Riven didn't hesitate. He pushed Koras through his entire body, feeling it strengthen his muscles, sharpen his reflexes.

He launched himself toward Lya in a burst of speed. His blade flashed upward, slicing through the root that held a cluster of buds just as it began to descend toward her. The severed roots recoiled, golden buds swinging wildly as they retreated back into the ceiling mesh.

Aron spun around at the sudden movement, his spear instantly in a guard position.

Lya stared at Riven in confusion, still not comprehending what had happened.

The moment stretched for only a heartbeat before understanding dawned on their faces. All across the ceiling, clusters of buds were drawing upward, roots contracting like muscles pulling back from a threat.

"Monsters!" Riven called out, raising his sword to a defensive position. "They're inside the buds—they're using them as bait!"

They turned as one, sprinting back toward the tunnel entrance. Riven's Spatial eyes tracked the frenzied movement overhead—the ceiling was literally coming alive, cracking and shifting as hidden creatures awakened.

But before they could reach the tunnel, something massive dropped from the ceiling, landing with a wet thud directly in their path. The impact shook the ground beneath their feet, forcing them to skid to a stop.

The creature that blocked their escape was a nightmare of pale flesh. Its body was long and sinuous, with a flattened torso that scraped against the stone as it dragged itself forward. There was no distinguishable head—just a wide, asymmetrical mouth bristling with grinding teeth where a face should have been, fused directly to its shoulders.

But most disturbing were the clusters of yellowish sacs hanging beneath its chest—diseased-looking organs that pulsed with the same golden light as the buds with each labored movement of the creature's body.

Its claws dug into the stone floor with a sound like nails on slate. Riven felt the pressure of its mass—it stood about as high as Lya, but was easily twice as long.

"The head!" Riven shouted, already moving forward alongside Aron.

They struck simultaneously—Riven's sword and Aron's spear both aimed directly at the creature's skull. But both weapons skidded across its surface, failing to penetrate the pale, rubbery skin.

  Shit.

The monster's tail whipped around with devastating force. Aron caught it with the shaft of his spear, but the impact drove him backward several paces. He kept his footing, absorbing the blow without injury.

Riven circled to the side while Aron kept the creature's attention. He slashed at its flank, but the blade only opened a shallow cut that oozed a thick, yellow fluid.

Fuck. What's this bastard's weak point?

His heart began to hammer harder as his Spatial eyes detected more movement from the ceiling—other monsters, drawing closer to the edge, preparing to drop.

We need to end this fast.

"The golden sac under its belly!" Lya's voice cut through the chaos.

Riven glanced over his shoulder. She stood with the talisman relic clutched in her hand, her body rigid as Koras flowed visibly through the object. Her eyes were wide but focused, locked on the creature's underside.

Riven understood immediately. He lunged forward, aiming for the pulsing golden pouch partially hidden against the floor where the creature's body dragged.

His blade found its mark, slicing deep into the soft tissue.

The effect was instantaneous. The monster reared back, its body convulsing in agony. It made no sound—couldn't scream—but its entire form shuddered as if suffocating, thrashing against the stone in a desperate bid to escape the killing blow.

Riven didn't relent. He drove the blade deeper, twisting it to ensure the damage was fatal. The golden light within the sac flickered, dimmed, then extinguished completely.

He jerked his sword free, already turning back toward his companions. But there would be no time to celebrate this small victory.

"More!" Riven shouted, already backing toward Lya. "There are more coming! Get back!" The corpse of the first monster had barely stopped twitching when Riven sensed the ceiling shifting again.

His Spatial eyes picked up three distinct masses detaching from the mesh of roots above—directly over the tunnel entrance.

The creatures dropped in unison. Three pale, writhing bodies blocked their only escape route, their maws opening and closing with grinding motions.

"Damn it," Riven hissed through clenched teeth. He grabbed Lya's arm, pulling her backward as they retreated deeper into the chamber.

Aron moved with them, his massive frame positioned protectively between them and the approaching monsters.

They backed away until they felt the cold stone of the far wall against their shoulders. Riven scanned the chamber frantically—smooth walls on all sides, no other exits, no passages. They were completely trapped.

"We need to fight," Aron said, his voice low and steady despite the dire situation. His body tensed, muscles coiling like springs beneath his skin. Faint golden emanations began to rise from his shoulders and arms. "We don't have a choice."

Riven nodded, his mind racing through their options. With what they now knew about the creatures' weak points, they have a chance.

The monsters arranged themselves in a semi-circle, their pale, elongated bodies swaying slightly as they prepared to attack. Each one drove its claws into the stone floor, anchoring itself before launching forward.

Riven pushed more Koras through his body, feeling the energy reinforce his muscles, heighten his senses. He didn't wait for the monsters to come to him. He charged.

The first creature lunged with surprising speed. Riven ducked beneath a sweeping claw, the wind of its passing ruffling his hair. He pivoted, bringing his sword around in a wide arc that connected with the monster's flank. The blade skimmed across its tough hide, barely cutting the surface.

He rolled away from a second strike, coming up on the creature's other side. This time he drove his sword directly toward the golden sac beneath its body—but the angle was wrong. The blade punctured the organ but didn't penetrate deeply enough.

The monster thrashed, its tail whipping toward him with bone-crushing force. Riven leaped over it, using the creature's own body as a springboard to launch himself higher. He twisted mid-air, bringing his sword down in a two-handed strike as he fell.

This time the blade drove deep into the golden sac, severing whatever vital organ lurked inside. The creature convulsed, its limbs spasming as the golden light within the sac flickered and died.

But he didn't pause to watch it die. He was already positioning himself to attack the second monster.

Aron had already dispatched the second monster, his spear dripping with thick yellow fluid. Only the third remained.

his massive spear glowing with the same golden energy that emanated from his skin. He drove the spear through the creature's side with such force that the point penetrated completely through its body and into the stone floor, pinning it in place.

The monster thrashed wildly, but Aron's strength held it fast.

Riven seized the opening, darting in to deliver a precise strike to the golden sac beneath its writhing body. His blade found the weak point, and the creature's struggles immediately weakened, then ceased.

They had barely caught their breath when Riven's Spatial eyes pulsed with warning. "Watch out!" he shouted, spinning toward a new disturbance in the ceiling.

The stone above them cracked with a sound like splitting bone. Something massive pushed through, dislodging chunks of rock that rained down on them. This wasn't a monster dropping from the ceiling mesh—this one had tunneled through the solid stone itself.

It was the same species as the others, but this one dwarfed its brethren. Standing as tall as Aron, its body was longer, more muscular, with a thicker, armored hide. The golden sac beneath its chest was protected by what looked like plates of bone, leaving only a tiny opening exposed.

Riven and Aron retreated until they stood with Lya at the very back of the chamber. The elite monster advanced slowly, its claws leaving deep gouges in the stone floor with each step.

Fuck. How are we going to kill this one? Riven's eyes darted frantically around the chamber.

Their only exit was the tunnel behind the creature, and while he and Aron might be able to fight their way through, Lya wouldn't stand a chance against something this size.

  Then an idea struck him.

Riven clenched his teeth so hard his jaw ached. His hands tightened around the hilt of his sword until his knuckles turned white. He reached deep into his core, drawing on the Koras that pulsed behind his sternum.

This time, he didn't pull a little. He drained more than half his reservoir in a single, desperate surge.

The effect was immediate and agonizing. Pressure built inside his skull as if someone were driving nails through his temples. His eyes felt like they might burst from their sockets, the pain so intense that his vision blurred at the edges.

But his space exploded outward, expanding far beyond its previous limits. The field grew to encompass the entire chamber, then pushed even further, probing through stone and earth. He intensified it simultaneously, sharpening his perception to detect the smallest variations in the structure around them.

Through the haze of pain, he found what he was looking for—a thin section of wall behind them, with a hollow space beyond.

"Aron!" Riven's voice cracked with the strain of maintaining the expanded field. "Destroy that wall. With everything you've got!" He pointed to a specific section of stone directly behind Lya.

Aron looked confused for a moment, then nodded in understanding. "I need a minute," he said, moving toward the spot Riven had indicated. He planted his feet firmly, closed his eyes, and began to concentrate. The golden emanations around his body intensifying, flowing like liquid light down his arms and into his spear, which now glowed with increasing intensity.

Now I just need to keep this thing busy for one minute.

Riven charged directly at the elite monster. He couldn't afford to be defensive now—every second he bought was essential.

He attacked with a flurry of strikes, not trying to penetrate its tough hide but to keep its attention firmly fixed on him.

The creature was powerful but slow to turn. Riven used this to his advantage, staying in constant motion, circling around its bulk, striking and retreating before it could bring its full force to bear.

His Spatial eyes, still painfully extended, gave him precious fractions of seconds of warning before each attack.

But he couldn't evade forever. The monster predicted one of his movements, its tail sweeping in a wide arc that caught Riven mid-dodge. Even with his enhanced perception, he barely had time to raise his sword to block. The tail was too massive to dodge completely.

The impact was like being hit by a battering ram. The force of it sent him flying backward, his body slamming against the chamber wall hard enough to drive the air from his lungs. Pain exploded across his back and shoulders.

  The creature charged without hesitation.

But before it could reach him, the chamber shook with a thunderous boom. A cloud of dust and stone fragments erupted from the wall where Aron stood, his body radiating golden light.

Lya, who had been hanging back during the fight, grabbed Riven's wrist and yanked him toward the newly created opening. "Come on!" she shouted, already breaking into a run.

Riven had been right—behind the wall lay the passage he'd sensed. Through the hole Aron had created, a narrow tunnel stretched, offering escape from the death trap the chamber had become.

They sprinted through the opening, the sound of their footsteps echoing off the close walls of the new passage.

But their relief was short-lived. The floor beneath them began to vibrate, a rhythmic pounding that grew stronger with each impact.

The elite monster was pursuing them, its massive body somehow squeezing through the opening, tearing at the edges to widen it. Riven could sense it through his Spatial eyes—a relentless force of hunger and rage, determined not to let its prey escape.
