Foreword

  Dear prospective reader,

Now that I have been working on my series for almost four months, I believe an introduction is in order. Of my book, that is, not of the little old me. Nobody cares about me. [Insert sad emoji].

Brother Wolf in Another World is a fantasy-action-adventure story, as it says above. What it doesn’t say is that I take all three of those aspects of my book very seriously: 1) It will have magical creatures and knights in shining armor, and I love building my world from the ground up to make it seem as polished and interesting as humanly possible. 2) There will be quite a lot of fighting, and my background in martial arts hopefully allows me to describe combat scenes in a detailed and somewhat realistic way. 3) It will be an actual adventure. The protagonist is set for a long journey ahead, full of discoveries and intrigue (political and otherwise).

What it doesn’t have and likely will never have are overpowered cheat abilities, a harem, and game-like progression mechanics. My protagonist is a grown-ass man (mentally speaking, he has reincarnated into a younger body after all), but he is on a path of self-improvement and self-discovery. Nobody can grow if you start at level 99. There might be a love interest in his future, but not in a juvenile “gotta-catch-them-all” sense. He will get stronger, but will not become a demigod (maybe?). And because he will have to rely on others, I am going to introduce a bunch of interesting side characters to support him.

Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

Those characters have lives of their own. Some of them will handle things in the background and do things without even consulting my protagonist. Sometimes they will even lie! (Imagine that) So don’t always take everything that happens at face value. I even plan standalone books about some of them now.

I will update my work retroactively as I improve as a writer. I don’t need any financial support from my readers. All I want is your feedback, so please leave a comment if you like what I am creating, or if you spot a typo or think a certain part is confusing or could be handled better in my writing. That is worth more to me than a dozen free cups of coffee. If I ever ask you, folks, for something, it would be to fund future projects I can't do on my own. Maybe an actual comic book or webtoon series... We shall see how it goes!

Thank you, and I hope you will stick around.

My stance on the use of AI

Since this comes up frequently, I would like to share my thoughts on the matter.

  1) I was raised on the OG Star Trek shows with Kirk and Picard. In fact, Star Trek: The Next Generation was the first ever TV series I watched in English. I loved how the holodeck was used to craft worlds and stories, and how the computer was used for research and design purposes. I will not apologize for using the tech I dreamed of having as a child, because our economic system hasn’t yet caught up with it, and some people, unfortunately, suffer because of it. Read Joseph Schumpeter if you want to learn about it. This is not the first time it has happened, and it won't be the last.

  2) Now, with that said, AI does not generate the story for me. Instead, it assists me to do it better. What you read is 100% my story, my characters, and my world. However, given that I currently live in a trilingual environment and, before that, lived in 8 countries, my brain is a mush when it comes to languages. It takes me way too long to write my story without relying on the tools I currently use.

Most importantly, I don’t enjoy writing as much without those tools. Writing is my hobby, not a job. Even though I take my hobby seriously and put a lot of effort into it, when it stops being enjoyable, I will stop doing it. Asking me to stop relying on the tool of the trade is the same as asking me to abandon it altogether. Like if someone asked a woodworker to abandon his power tools, or a baker to abandon his oven with precise temperature and moisture control, and use a firepit and a bucket of ice instead.

  3) With that said, I use two tools: Grammarly Premium (yes, it is also an AI tool) and Sudowrite (can be used to generate full texts, but I don’t do that).

First tool, I use it for grammar and spelling. Then, it helps me by offering suggestions on tone adjustment, synonyms, and paraphrasing. I choose what I like from those suggestions, and my original draft becomes more readable by incorporating them.

Second tool, I use it for line editing. It is a painstaking sentence-level revision process that further refines my text. At this point, new sentences generated by AI are introduced. I ask it to rewrite certain paragraphs to “show-not-tell”, to “be more descriptive”, or make it “shorter”. Some suggestions I accept, others I ignore, and more often I make a third option by combining my original text with AI-generated text. This helps me avoid getting stuck in writer’s block for too long and move on with my story. In terms of word count, I believe it adds (sometimes removes, but overall adds) about 10-25% to my first draft.

If you can accept this, good. If you don’t, that is your right. I avoid plenty of businesses as a consumer myself because of my political or ethical beliefs. It is our consumer choice, and I respect that.

  Hope it helps, toodeloo.
