Book 9 - The Deal - Chapter 32

  Nefer opened a second room.

I wasn’t sure if he somehow picked up on the vibe from our group or if he knew there were only three shower stalls to a room and wanted to be helpful. Either way, the gathering room across the hall from ours was open, and Miel guided me to it. For a second, I thought Ether might follow me, but Miel stopped at the doorway and began herding the others into our original room.

None of the others were out by the time that I finished, so I headed to the main area to wait.

“Is everyone else on their way?” Nefer snapped to attention as soon as he saw me.

“I’m not sure.” I shrugged. “But I’m sure they’re going to be along soon.”

There was an awkward silence that followed. I could tell he wanted to ask me about something, but he was mumbling under his breath so softly that I couldn’t hear what he might be going over.

It was fine with me if he didn’t want to bother me; I wanted to look at Fray’s stats. Though my messing around with my CB might have been why he hadn’t bothered me. Either way, I had some time, so I took advantage of it.

  Fray Harror - Level 4

Age: 18, Hair: Brown, Eye color: Brown

Skin: Green, Blood: Red, Height: 5’2”

  356.5 Exp

  Hitter

  14 Power 6 Defense 4 Speed

  4 Magic 8 Recovery 3 Aura

  Stat Points: 2

  Skills: Slash, Vampiric Slash

Passive: Dodge, Sixth Sense, Disengage, Double Grip

It looked like she’d gotten the passive . It was a simple passive that made her attacks more potent if she was holding her weapon in both of her hands rather than just one. Considering she seemed to be planning on using a katana, at least for the foreseeable future, it was something that would help her out.

I knew that she was wanting to try to get her power to twenty as fast as she could, but her low Speed was something I was going to see if she would try to bring up. was a Speed skill, while and were both Defense skills. At the moment, she wasn’t running into any problems using them because everything was at Tier Zero, but if she wanted to keep using those passives, then she was going to need to bring both her Speed and Defense up to ten before she hit level ten. It wasn’t impossible for her to do; that was only four more levels, but that would only give her two more points to play with, which wouldn’t get her to twenty Power. I’d have to talk to her and see how she wanted to build her class, though. because it might be better for her to get rid of the passive and just focus on Power and Defense.

Skills could still be used at lower Tiers, but a Tier Zero wasn’t going to be very helpful against a Tier One monster and even less so against a Tier One Boss. And while she could have twenty Speed and still use the Tier Zero , she couldn’t have ten Speed and use the Tier One version of Dodge. The same was true about all skills, and while at the lower Tiers there wasn’t as much of a discrepancy between the two, at the higher Tiers it was an almost impossible difference.

“Are you busy?” Nefer either finally worked up the courage to talk to me or settled on what he was going to say.

There wasn’t much more that I could do with her stats. I still wanted to go over a list of our inventory to see what kind of gear we should focus on upgrading, but that was something that I’d have to go over with Oz.

I closed out the menu. “Not really. Just killing time until the rest of my team gets cleaned up.”

“Oh.” The Anubis looked around for a moment before swallowing, then hastily blurted out. “Are you really Trent Vowler’s kid?’

My heart sped up just a little, though I had a feeling that he was wanting to verify who I was rather than if it was true.

“I’m Atlas Vowler.” I crossed my arms in front of me. “Why do you ask?”

“Is it…” Nefer glanced around, then lowered his voice a little. “Is it true that your dad died during the Mive Dungeon Break and that Klix is doing a ritual to bring him back to life?”

That question surprised me a little. “Where did you hear that?”

“Well, no one has seen him in a few weeks. Plus, you’ve been here for a few days, and no one has seen him.” He nodded towards the door. “And it looks like you have a new teacher.”

“Miel is just doing my father a favor by taking us out to stretch our legs while he deals with the reports and stuff from the aftermath of what happened in Mive.” I shook my head. “It’s probably going to be a few weeks before he gets through all the reports and meetings that he has to go through before they’ll let him out.”

  “Oh…” Nefer looked disappointed.

“Not as exciting as you were hoping?” I chuckled. “Though considering the Six got wiped out, I have a feeling they would probably be the first ones brought back if something like that was possible.”

“I guess you’re right…” He glanced around. “But then why did he come here to make the report?”

I shrugged. “I might be his kid, but I’m only a first year, and that’s up there with God-level business.” I smirked. “I’m just glad they finally let me out of the room.”

The Anubis nodded, seemingly sad that there hadn’t been some big story for me to tell.

I was going to have to remember to talk to Gesai about that. We probably needed to come up with some type of story about why we were going to be staying here so long.

My stomach started growling almost the same time the others walked out of the back. I chuckled as I looked at Ether. “Ready to go eat?”
