Chapter 10: Crisis core

In the harbor, the dense red fog, with a familiar scent to Harpya, could be seen.

Edward docks the ship and says they've finally arrived, and Harpya recaps the plan once more.

The soldiers descend to the city and observe the scene; it was like a war zone.

The castle was in ruins, the square that was always crowded with people was empty. Harpya felt a strong tightness in her chest, but regained her composure, reiterating her objective.

Cerberus begins to bark, the soldiers observe the bodies of dead guards with spears in their throats, and they begin to stir.

  Commander:

Soldiers:The revived bodies didn't resemble the previous enemies; their eyes glowed blue and their teeth had fangs. One of the monsters attacks the commander's neck with a swift strike and advances towards the units.

Harpya uses her sword and defeats some, but they come back to life. The fog grows denser and engulfs Harpya's group.

  Nyx:

Cerberus unleashes a magical fire attack, burning more enemies who return stronger than before.

Harpya realizes that the fog was what brought them back to life and plunges her sword into the ground. The sword roars and dissipates the fog. The soldiers advance on the enemies, defeating them.

Harpya falls to his knees exhausted, but smiles, realizing the strength of his weapon. The soldiers regroup, and Harpya speaks to them, saying they should split up again to search for the bestiary and perhaps something else that could help them.

One group went to the old alchemists' workshop, while Harpya, Nyx, and Cerberus went to the orphanage.

The wounded were removed from the site, and Harpya left with his small group. On the way, he felt nostalgic and sad at the same time, seeing that his old home was in ruins. Upon arriving at the orphanage, a smell of mold and old wood filled the air; he felt a chill as he walked through the corridors.

  Stolen story; please report.

  Nyx:Harpya:

He looks out the window and sees the old training camp and remembers Baron and wonders how he could have forgotten his friend and promises that as soon as he returns he will finally visit him.

Harpya and Nyx spent almost the entire day searching among the rubble and drawers that remained of the orphanage, until Harpya finally found a copy of Saint Gorb's bestiary.

The pages were torn and others a little destroyed, but the main part, which was the description of some enemies and the manufacture of weapons from the relics, was intact.

Harpya gives a relieved smile and heads outside with Nyx, but is surprised by a woman with pale hair, blindfolded eyes and a rope around her neck, she murmured that she had the son of the devil and attacks them with spectral blows, Harpya dodges and Cerberus counterattacks the enemy who again says the same words.

Nyx attempts to recite the exorcist's prayer, but it has no effect, and he is entangled in spectral ropes that strangle him. Children with pale faces and black corneas emerge from the ground with horns and attack Harpya.

The fight intensifies, and Harpya saves Nyx. Together with Cerberus, they launch a wind and fire attack, burning the place.

As a final blow before leaving the orphanage, Harpya unleashes an energy attack with his sword that defeats the enemy.

His last murmurs were: I... no... Help me... Harpya.

Harpya turned pale after hearing that from the woman's mouth, but he suspects he has seen that face before, even if it is different.

The soldiers regroup, saying they heard a loud bang, and Harpya says he got what he wanted and that they should now return home.

The group says they found books and potions and ended up looting. Harpya says they did well, and soon they leave for the ship. Nyx, still in shock, says he thought he was going to die and that he had never faced that kind of enemy before. Harpya says he hadn't either.

Inside the ship, Edward makes a quick exit and talks to Harpya, saying that this time he thought they wouldn't get out alive, especially when he started seeing more and more wounded bodies.

  Harpya:

Edward: Harpya takes a deep breath: "Yes, but we paid a high price. Edward, do you believe in ghosts? The vengeful kind that lives in a place and talks."

Edward looks strange and says: "No, I've seen specters and devils, but that's just legend in my view, why?"

  Harpya:

Edward is startled by Harpya's words and tells him to go rest, and soon they return to Volny.
