DNA contains code that determines which innate magical ability a person has. It will always either be one their parents had, or their grandparents. A person may inherit their Talent from their grandparents if at least one grandparent on each side of the family had that Talent.
The ability manifests when children hit puberty, and is not usually consciously controlled at first. It’s is easy to purchase home tests to see what ability a child will most likely develop. Many hospitals offer the test for newborns as part of the package deal if parents want genetic testing to see what other diseases or traits their baby is predisposed to.
There are six forms of innate magic in humans, only one of which a single person will develop.
Telekinetics can move light objects they have line of sight to, such as light switches, papers, plates, etc. They can slow heavy falling objects, but not completely stop them. Whether something is considered “small” or “large” depends on the object’s mass.
Telekinesis can be used to supplement manual lifting and carrying to a significant degree, depending on the strength of the ability. The ability can become stronger over time as the telekinetic trains, much like a magical muscle. This ability does not affect living plants, animals, or people.
Telepaths cannot actually read minds, but can project their thoughts into another's mind if they have permission, and can hear thoughts either intentionally aimed at them, whether the other person is a telepath or not, or loud mental “shouts” from people trying to be heard telepathically. Telepaths must be in visual contact with the person they wish to send and receive direct thoughts from. Non-telepaths cannot receive thoughts, but can send them.

All brains naturally produce psychic magicles that create a telepathic “shield” around their thoughts, so is no eavesdropping on people's private thoughts. Imagine it as if there’s a mental shield or wall that everyone has around their head, and they have to open a door for any thoughts to come in or go out.
Telepathy can work between two people during the day if they are in physical contact with each other.
Precogs can see events happen before they occur if the event is already determined to happen. Many people with this ability join the armed forces or local police and hone it to help in their jobs. It is used to detect things such as bombs on timers and earthquakes, so that people can be warned and moved to safety.
In everyday life, people have avoided serious accidents, such as traffic crashes or falling from unstable footing because they were able to see it coming. It’s also abused by "fortune tellers" who say they can see years into the future with it, and stage magicians who capitalize on it during their acts.
Illuminates can create balls of colored light in their hands. The light can be temporarily transferred to an appropriate container and will stay lit up to four hours. It is not hot and cannot burn anything. Stronger Illuminates can create brighter lights that last longer when they walk away from the light, as well as multiple sources of light.
Thermics can heat surfaces, fluids, or the air in a contained space up to 100 C (212 F), or cool to 0 C (32 F). Magically heated materials retain their heat for up to 4 hours after the Thermic has stopped consciously using their power.
The heat does not transfer to any other material the initial material might be touching (they can heat the coffee in a cup without heating the cup itself). Many Thermics become firefighters or join outdoor professions such as park rangers.
Restoratives have not so much an ability as the innate biological condition to heal extremely quickly. They don’t catch colds, the flu, or foodborne illnesses, they never develop cancer, and any injuries are healed within hours or days, depending on how severe it is. The ability works 24 hours a day.
They cannot use this ability to directly heal other people, though the ability is being studied to increase healing effectiveness of cancer and neurological disorder treatments. All Restoratives have O- bloodtype and are therefore universal donors. Donated blood loses its restorative ability the first morning after it is donated unless kept in an underground blood bank. Blood that has lost its restorative power is still acceptable for standard blood transfusions.
