[LOG BEGINS]
We were in space, assigned to investigate strange signals. We’d been getting unknown reads and measurements everywhere around us for a while now. No one could pinpoint where they were coming from — or if they were getting closer to Earth. Or if they were dangerous.
This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.
We communicated the findings. The response: fall back.
While prepping the ship to leave, turbulence hit. The ship rocked violently, crew scrambling to stabilize it. Suddenly, the door flew open. I was thrown into space — and I wasn’t floating, I was falling.
The gravitational pressure was low, but I was still dropping. My partner saw me fall and dove after me, trying to stop me from dying. He caught me mid-fall. But now we were both going down.
That’s when it happened.
A humongous, glowing white being descended from above and caught us. I saw everything. It was terrifying. We were being lifted… then everything went black.
When I opened my eyes, I was on Earth.
We were back. Just like that. Getting prepped to speak at a press conference about our mission. I was staring blankly around the room, lost in thought, when my partner leaned over and asked what was wrong.
“I don’t remember,” I said. “But I feel like something important happened. Something I should remember.”
After the conference, I asked him:
“How did we get back into the ship? After I fell out and you came after me… how did we survive that?”
He stared at me like I had three heads.
“What are you talking about? That never happened. After the turbulence, we took our time and came back to Earth. You must have imagined that.”
I froze.
Because I could’ve sworn it was real. I could still feel it. Still see the light. Still hear the silence of space. And yet…
I still don’t remember what happened after it went black.
