Chapter 13 - twisted truths

I awaken in the same domain where gravity bends unnaturally. Red roses surround me, and in the middle sits Nytheria.

“Are you done holding back?” she asks.

  Silence stretches.

  I don’t answer.

  “That’s a no, I suppose,” she says.

  Silence stretches again.

“Zero, do you want the truth of your existence? Why you exist?” she asks.

I don’t answer. My breath hitches.

“I’ll be honest with you.” She stands, darkness bending around her. “Have you ever wondered why you’re always alone?”

  She circles me.

“It’s because you’re a half-breed. Human enough to feel, other enough to be discarded.”

“You’re lying.” The words scrape my throat.

“I assure you, I am not,” she replies calmly. “Don’t you find it odd how you never fit in, no matter how hard you try? How they treated you did you forget?”

I take a slight step back.

“Humans only care about those who benefit them. It’s basic human nature; they are all selfish.” She continues, “So when you don’t benefit them, do you expect them to care? To nurture you?”

  My breathing quickens.

  “Stop talking.”

“There’s a reason every bond you’ve made ends the same way, again and again,” she presses on. “It’s because you’re nothing but a burden.”

  Maybe she’s right about something… I am a burden.

  Silence passes between us.

“Hurts, doesn’t it? Knowing that in your whole life, you’ll never find a single person who sees you as something other than a weapon,” she says calmly.

“You don’t know that… the universe doesn’t even know I exist.”

“Yes, that’s true, but… your existence is cursed. Fate really has it out for you.” She continues, “Your whole life has been nothing but neglect, pain, solitude. It’s depressing, isn’t it?”

I finally meet her gaze head-on.

“Someone will have to take responsibility for what you’ve become.”

  Silence stretches between us.

“And that someone is?” I ask.

  “That’s

for you to figure out,” she replies.

  “You may leave.”

  She disappears
