“There’s still no signal,” I said to the others as I stared at the no service symbol on my pokedex. Trainers already had emergency devices that could call for help from rangers or other trainers before the pokedex, and after its creation the Regions and League were quick to implement them into the most popular pokemon training device ever.
Not that useful now though.
I put the pokedex back into my backpack, slung it over my shoulder and thought about the last few hours. Tense would describe well the first hour back on the road.
The fairy pokemon were scared despite the best efforts from Dendra and Clefairy to distract and calm them down. They twitched at every sound that came from the forest, stopped to huddle together every five minutes when anything happened to one of them, like falling down or stumbling on a rock, and suddenly burst into tears at random moments.
The annoyance that had been growing was whipped out when Jess whispered something that chilled me to the core, “What happened to them?”
Thankfully, after that first hour they began to relax. Dendra attempted jokes that succeeded in a not so good way. The fairy pokemon laughed at her as she mistimed jokes or forgot punchlines. The fighting trainer was crushed but at least we weren’t stopping anymore. Clefairy also helped by treating the entire thing like it was an outdoor expedition, and some of them bought the whole thing line and sink.
At some point Aiden approached me from the side. He’d been lost in his own thoughts for a while now so he asked with a low tone, “Scott, what should we do if someone attacks us?”
“Release your Gyarados, with luck they’ll become scared and run,” I said loud enough for Jess to catch. “Besides that, leave the attacking to my team and focus on defending the fairy pokemon, but treat it the same as if you were fighting a match; if you see something that we don’t see, help us.”
He nodded nervously and continued looking around, but the conversation gave me an idea, “Hey Clefairy.” The pokemon turned to me from the back where she was laughing with Cleffa about something. “Can I speak with you for a second?”
The pink pokemon raised an eyebrow, apologized to her friend and bounced to the front of the column. She got to my side and looked up with curious eyes.
“I’m sorry to have to ask you this,” I said slowly, “but it would help a lot in guarding the group if we knew who we’re dealing with here. Do you remember who took you guys? Or how many pokemon they had?”
Clefairy stared into my eyes for a few seconds before she lifted her arm in front of her body, two white claws raised on her hand. Aiden, still nearby, asked, “Two trainers?” She nodded at him, and then raised both hands and made four, before making five.
“Four pokemon with one trainer, five with another?” Another nod. Great, that was working. “Is one of them a type trainer?” She raised a single finger and looked around, before nodding her head at Swablu, “Flying type trainer? And the other is a generalist?” She nodded.
“That was very useful,” Aiden said.
“We can’t be complacent though, just because they showed just these pokemon doesn’t mean that it's all they have, or that there are only those trainers after the fairies for that matter.” Jess, Aiden and Clefairy nodded.
After we thanked the Clefairy, she turned around and jumped back, dashing across the air like an ice skater towards her friends. She landed near the Cleffa with a twirl that made her smile and began happily chatting again.
The next few hours were peaceful and, apart from some more discussions on what to do both between trainers and with the pokemon rotated outside the pokeballs, mostly silent. It was almost midday when I felt my hair being hustled by the wind in a chaotic manner.
“Get ready, something is coming!”
The trained pokemon surrounding the fairy group turned outward, forming a barrier around them and their trainers. The pokemon close by stared at the sky, weary of a flying attack while their trainers released their entire teams, and a few seconds later the four teams were out and ready for a fight–except the newer pokemon who hadn't trained much yet–including the Atrocious Pokemon who roared to the sky, chasing away the curious pokemon near the road. The sound of a flying pokemon appeared from our left and we turned to that side.
Shooting off from above the trees, a large and dark figure with large wings landed in the middle of the road, leaving the space of about a battlefield between us. It was a massive Corviknight carrying two young adults who quickly jumped from his saddled back and patted away the dust from their clothes.
The one on the right had short black hair, wore a suit without the jacket and wore a tired face with dark circles under his eyes. The other one on the left had a buzzcut and a beard, was very tall, and dressed in a red and black casual wear that I expected an Unovan to wear.
“Aren’t you glad I told you to look near the roads,” Buzzcut said in a loud and teasing tone.
“Super glad,” The tired one said. He checked a silver watch on his wrist and then shouted across the distance. “Alright children, let's make this simple and fast. Step aside, let us capture the fairy pokemon and we’ll be on our way fast.”
I could feel the fairy pokemon begin to tremble, huddle together and sob as one. They were taking quick steps back which pulled the others with them. I also took a step back, as if in fear, and glanced at the others.
I opened my mouth to answer them and Cape, Swablu, Cross, and Velocity disappeared, each with their own Aerial Ace. We’d already told our fastest pokemon to try and knock out the enemy pokemon as fast as possible, and they all looked for the Corviknight. Two small figures spilled forth from the Corbiknight shoulders as blurs to meet our pokemon.
Cross and Velocity reappeared in the air in the middle of the trajectory, blocked by a strong looking Watchog, who then kicked away the Hawlucha and the Staravia while Swablu dive was blocked by a smiling Emolga’s tail. Corviknight took Cape’s strike with an open chest covered by Iron Defense but the steel type tilted backwards and almost fell to the ground, clearly not expecting Cape’s strength by the widening of his eyes.
“So be it,” the tallest one said, and laughed loudly before turning to his companion who seemed done with him already. “I always wanted to say that.”
The two trainers reached into their pockets and released their teams. Tired eyes released three pokemon that stood together with Emolga and Corviknight; a Fearow, a Toucannon and a Vespiquen. Buzzcut released four pokemon near the Watchog; a Leavanny, a Galvantula, a Swoobat, and just in front of us, a Conkeldurr, the massive two meters tall pokemon stared at us with bewilderment.
“Don’t worry, big soft,” his trainer said loud enough for us to hear while rolling his eyes. “We’re not going to do anything with them, we’ll just take them out of the way and capture the fairies.” And then turned to talk to his shorter companion.
The fighting type nodded, and with a sign from tired eyes the pokemon dispersed; Leavanny, Galvantula and Swoobat ran to our left and dived around to where Jess and Dendra were while Fearow, Toucannon and Emolga went right towards Aiden and Clefairy. I didn’t turn to look or make any movement to stop them because in front of my team, ready to intervene, were Conkeldurr, Vespiquen, Corviknight and Watchog, the ones who just by look seemed the strongest, the ones I was glad would be fighting us. Before anyone could do anything though, Cross walked by me to stand alongside my team, eyes locked with the Conkeldurr as if his presence offended him. The Hariyama's heavy steps rumbled the ground as Velocity, Swablu and Cross flew past us, returning to help their trainers.
Conkeldurr, Vespiquen, Corviknight and Watchog against Cape, Jungle, Mesa, Valley, Mountain, and Chopper.
Well, no reason to let them take initiative, “Jungle Razor Leaf, Mountain Icy Wind, Cape Pin Missile.” The Ivysaur, Cryogonal and Heracross unleashed their attacks into the four pokemon.
Watchog expertly danced between the dozens of leaves, chunks of ice and glowing green pins, Corviknight hardened his body with Iron Defense and smashed through the projectiles while Vespiquen floated in front of the Muscular Pokemon and, raising her arms, created a barrier made of green hexagonal energy plates that stopped the attacks. As soon as the barrage ended and she floated up and above him, the Conkeldurr began to walk towards us, and two steps into his walk the ground in front of him exploded and massive slices of rock rushed towards us.
Chopper moved forward to stop the incoming fighting type but Mesa was quicker. The Baltoy raised chunks of sand that grasped the Rock Slide and disabled its projectiles with his own energy, which made the Conkeldurr raise an eyebrow, and from behind him I saw Buzzcut's eyes also snap to the brown pokemon in the middle of the formation.
“Cape, Mountain, intercept the ones that will be coming. Valley protect Mesa, they’re going to aim for him.” The three pokemon nodded and I turned to Jungle. “Jungle, don’t bring out Sunny Day, but use your new move.”
The green pokemon gave out a quick huff, but closed his eyes and his green body half my size began to shine grey as his body grew, slowly developing more muscles and churning out energy. I didn’t want him to use Sunny Day since I didn’t know if their pokemon knew fire moves that took advantage of that. I turned forward and saw Conkeldurr almost reaching Chopper, and that Watchog and Corviknight had disappeared from behind him.
“Corviknight and Watchog are around!” I warned, and suddenly a gust of wind swept everyone and Corviknight appeared in Jungle’s other side, his beak a vortex of flying energy ready to strike. Cape dashed straight at him with his wings but the flying type expected that and dodged with a push from his legs, his beak struck the bug’s back as he passed him. Mesa’s Psybeam slammed into the bird and threw her away from the group just before the ground type was grabbed by his head and slammed into the ground by a somersault from Watchog.
Valley cried out in surprise at the unreal speed of the pokemon and immediately dashed at her fellow normal type, pushing the pokemon away from the cracked body of the Baltoy. The pokemon easily parried four attacks before simply kicking Valley away and turning to the Baltoy, ready to finish his job.
“Jungle Vine Whip.” Jungle opened his eyes after having grown at least thirty centimeters in size. His vines, much stronger than thirty seconds ago, swung out and whipped away both the Corviknight and the dashing Watchog, the steel type sported a crumbled line on his steel skin while the Watchog jumped away from us and towards his team by using the vine as a trampoline, meanwhile in the sky Cryogonal attacked the Vespiquen above us that was trying to take space with his chains and ice, the bug type not letting him get close to use his powerful arsenal of physical moves.

“Mesa, are you alright?” I asked, already pulling a potion from my bag, but the pokemon raised an arm to stop me and just floated away from the ground. His usually neutral eyes were curved up in rage. Cape had also come back and was growling.
“New plan,” I said, standing up again. “Cape, go after Watchog, he's the biggest threat. Mesa help Chopper against Conkeldurr. Jungle keep Corviknight away. Valley I’ll direct you between helping Jungle against Corviknight and Mountain.” Heracross, Baltoy, Ivysaur and Minccino nodded just as a shockwave pushed me back.
Chopper had used his powerful Force Palm and the Conkeldurr had held his concrete pillars as shields as his palm smashed into them like a train. The force of the attack still made the bigger pokemon slightly slide back across the dirty road. The fighting pokemon grinned, pulled back his right arm while raising his increasingly glowing pillar. He leaned forward and slammed down the makeshift weapon into the Hariyama.
Chopper raised one of his arms and took the adapted Hammer Arm directly on his forearm. He grimaced for a second as the strength and energy flowed into his arm, and grinned when his masterful Counter swallowed everything. The pokemon raised his other arm, and I remembered that this was a team fight, and that I wasn’t the only one that could direct pokemon. I counted Corviknight on our left and Vespiquen above us.
“Aerial Ace! Stop Watchog!” Cape scrambled to activate his move and when he disappeared in a burst of flying energy I saw that Watchog had already escalated the giant Conkeldurr’s back and was staring at Hariyama's face with glowing eyes.
The Hypnosis ended earlier as its user suddenly was tackled down by a blue burr, but it’d been enough. Chopper’s swing didn’t have the full strength that the Hariyama could’ve put into it with his Counter. The swing still connected and slammed into one of the pillars, broke a good chunk of it, and pushed his grey opponent to the side with quick steps. It also made the ground tremble without any psychic pokemon to absorb the spread with its pink barriers.
“Thunder Wave,” I said to Valley, who chirped and unleashed lighting at the swooping Corviknight who tried to take advantage of the distraction. He easily dodged the wave by flying up. The sound of breaking ice above us made me look to see the Vespiquen pestering the Cryogonal. The pokemon had turned aggressive and was swooping at the Cryogonal, while keeping her distance she pushed his chains away with controlled bursts of Gust and struck at a distance with Fury Cutter, the energy from the flying green cuts powering her body with each strike.
“Valley, Swift.” The pokemon launched ten stars towards the Vespiquen who glanced down and flew backwards from the slower Mountain to Gust away the stars safely.
After confirming that Cape was still keeping the Watchog occupied by using Aerial Ace continuously, I glanced at Valley, “Attack Vespiquen as soon as she comes down.” The normal types nodded and I turned to the Cryogonal. “Mountain, regroup!”
His ice plates shifted and he swiftly cut his floating. The collection of ice sheets fell to the ground until he was just above us and he twisted around, activating his floating again and looking up at the Vespiquen that had followed.
“Go,” I whispered, and Valley launched another Swift, this time in a slow arch, and then used Bullet Seed, launching a barrage of eight seeds directly at her.
I could see from the corner of my eyes the Hariyama exchange strikes with the Conkeldurr, and then Mesa using Sand Tomb to trap the pokemon’s legs and pillars. From behind me I heard Corviknight once again trying to attack Jungle, and him counter attacking with Razor Leaf if I heard it right. Vespiquen stopped the seeds with Protect and dodged the grey stars, but Mountain got some good hits in with Ice Shard and a Night Slash from the side. Chopped tumbled back towards us as Conkeldurr jumped out of the Sand Tomb and slammed his whole body into him, and Watchog somehow grabbed Cape’s arm and slammed him into the ground hard, making the bug bounce off of it. Vespiquen swopped again above us, multiple spots in her body glowed before bug energy stingers fell down from her like rain into Mesa, who stopped trying to trap the fighting pokemon to raise a rock barrier from the ground to intercept them.
It wasn't a bad situation yet, but it didn’t have room for improvement, we were already operating at maximum capacity. I could only stall them and hope the others won their own fights and reinforced us later.
“Conkeldurr,” the taller one said nervously looking up, “buddy, how about you finish this up, hum?”
The fighting type slammed his pillars into Chopper again before letting go of them to flex his entire body. Fighting energy ran through the pokemon’s visible veins, giving the normally purple lines an orange shine before his entire grey body pulsed. Muscles contracted and grew as the pokemon flexed more and more until he suddenly let go and the effect seemed to run across his body, still flexing his body constantly. Like Jungle, he’d used a status move, but this one was a more advanced and powerful one, Bulk up.
“Chopper, don't let him hit you.” The Hariyama had already understood the danger and stepped away from the bulging pokemon, his eyes glinting with the glow from Detect.
My eyes searched for Cape and saw him and Watchog almost out of the road. The Heracross was flying around like a maniac while trying to catch the slippery normal type who dodged and sometimes even landed a powerful punch or kick at him which made Cape double down despite not leaving any bruises. I guess we can’t depend on him here.
Corviknight once again dived near Jungle and Valley, and this time he seemed to have learned something. He dodged the barrage of Swift from Valley and smashed through the sharp leaves from Jungle despite his size. The crow closed in on the two and swatted the small grey pokemon who landed near Mesa with a hard thud, and launched three Aerial Cutter into Jungle with Valley and Mesa behind him, to catch them if he dodged. Time slowed down as I watched the Ivysaur make a decision, the grass type closed his large eyes and took the flying energy slashes with a bawling sound that shook me. I watched my pokemon wimp backwards as three bloody wounds opened on his side.
Behind us a white sun burst into existence on another team but I didn’t turn back to look. I could see the shocked faces of the two enemy trainers while my extremely cold and calm mind raced through options. The one with the dour face groaned, “I told them to not stress the pokemon.” He lamented as the taller one nervously chuckled.
Corviknight on the left, Vespiquen above and Conkeldurr just in front. Jungle’s reach, Mountain’s strength, Mesa’s power, Valley to tie everything up.
“Mountain take out Corviknight; Jungle Seed Bomb on Vespiquen; Mesa Ancient Power on Conkeldurr,” I said quietly. My pokemon burst in movement around me and I turned to my Minccino, “Baby-Doll Eyes on Corviknight to ignite.”
Valley nodded and jumped on top of the wincing Jungle before jumping again off the top of his glowing bulb. Coviknight’s eyes followed her before glazing over for two seconds, time enough for the Cryogonal to swoop in and bind his wings, torso and neck.
The steel type crow woke up just as the ice type pulled himself towards him and only managed to let out a squeak before a powerful Body Slam rattled his head, followed by the full Mountain experience; Rapid Spin on his right wing, Slash on his torso, another Body Slam that left him close to the ground, and finally a Take Down, all of that while bound tightly by the ice chains which ended with a unconscious and crumbled steel type with broken wings. His allies would’ve helped him, but they had their own problems.
Jungle, despite his wounds, had leaned forward and his bulb had launched a giant glowing seed like an artillery at the close Vespiquen. Gust was ineffective against the weighty object, and the Vespiquen was forced to dodge just for the giant brown seed to explode just behind her and send her dropping down towards her trainer with smocking back burns. The bug pokemon was almost regaining her floating when Valley’s Swift stars exploded into her. She fainted.
Mesa floated above the battlefield and glowed with purple power as he ripped equally purple glowing chunks of the soil from the road and turned them into round boulders that jumped to the air. The Baltoy swung his arms in a cross and the ten giant floating boulders fired off one after the other towards the Bulked Up pokemon who began to smash them away with his pillars.
“Valley, Charm on the Conkeldurr.”
Before the Minccino, a pink ball was formed between its small paws. The normal type stretched the ball and draped the material around her as she stared at the Conkeldurr. The pokemon’s narrowed eyes were pulled into her big ones, which made the last four boulders strike his body and head, throwing the massive pokemon tumbling back with his pillars, but not before Chopper scooped down a giant piece of earth, turned it into mud and launch the massive Mud Shot at the tumbling pokemon, making him fall hard on the ground. Mountain extended his chains, brought the unconscious Corviknight above us with a lot of effort and then slammed the pokemon on top of the fallen Conkeldurr just as Vespiquen’s body fell down by his side.
While this all was going on, I saw that Watchog was trying to shake off a beat up and huffing Heracross to help his team, but Cape was nothing if not persistent and simply didn’t let the normal type pass him by.
“Fuck.” The taller one finally said after a few seconds after looking at the three pokemon in front of him. “What do we do now?”
The tired one let out a deep breath and turned to the fighting type,” What do you want to do Conkeldurr?”
The fighting type pushed the Corviknight on top of him to the side and stood up. Conkeldurr stared at us as we huddled together while he grabbed his pillars. I knew what he and the enemy trainers saw. Yes, we just had a massive victory over them, dropping two pokemon while having all of us, but him and Watchog were somehow practically fresh still while we looked exhausted and were hurt. After a few seconds the Conkeldurr seemed to come to a decision, the fighting type scoffed and walked forward, his two pillars digging into the ground.
That is, until the Clefairy landed in front of us.
The massive pokemon stopped and looked down at the fairy type. The two stared at each other for a second before the fighting type raised a grey glowing concrete pillar above his head. I was about to order my pokemon to act when the pink pokemon cried out, “Cle..fairy!”
The pillar stopped glowing. Conkeldurr froze for a second and that was enough for the Clefairy to unleash a barrage of moves, Chilling Water, Icy Wind, Magical Leaf, Swift, Water Pulse, and Psybeam, one after the other and all of them smashed with extreme precision and power into the upper body of the massive top heavy pokemon and almost made him topple down if not for him firming his other pillar on the ground and holding out for dear life. Finally, the pokemon blew out a kiss and a pale pink energy ball smashed into the pokemon and returned to the Clefairy instantly, now shining brightly with a powerful scarlet pink. It was a Draining Kiss. The fighting type staggered and dropped to one knee.
The taller trainer huffed and threw his hands to the air while the short one just pinched the bridge of his nose. Another explosion of white washed over us.
“Oh for the fucking Legendaries!”
“They must be breaking the jamming anyways.” The man dressed in formal clothes grabbed his pokeball and whistled, “Let's just go before we can’t even leave here.”
“Right,” his partner said and whistled with his fingers.
Watchog sneaked around a punch and slammed his two legs into Cape, throwing him towards us while he ran back to his trainer while the six pokemon that had gone around us immediately came back. Fearow and Toucannon flew above us, the bigger pokemon carrying Emolga on his back. The three pokemon looked scuffed and tired as if they had been fighting for their lives, and the image of Clefairy just made them more agitated. From the other side, Galvantula carried his two knocked down partners, Leavanny and Swoobat while seemingly fine on its own.
Fearow and Toucannon landed on the ground and the two trainers climbed on them and took to the skies as they recovered the pokemon on the ground with the blinding speed of someone who had done that thousands of times. The only one still on the ground was Watchog who seemed bored at what was happening.
“I’ll remember you, League Trainer,” the taller one on Fearow said. “… Eh, probably not but who knows. Maybe the boss will.” I was about to order a barrage to stop them from flying away when he left one last order. “Hyper Beam, full power ahead.”
Watchog leaned back and opened his mouth wide, revealing a concentrated ball of grey energy inside before wiping his head forward and unleashing a giant beam of power three times bigger than his body in our direction. I saw the grey energy grow and grow in my vision. The beam was certainly going to engulf us.
I saw my team, Chopper and Clefairy stepping in front of me and unleashed their own defenses. In the middle of them, I saw a small humanoid shape with a small tint of purple in the middle being swallowed by grey. A screen of pink light appeared in front of it, and an explosion seemed to happen.
And I fell down to the ground.
