Chapter 16 - The Veil’s Purpose
The silver door pulsed with an eerie light, its surface shifting like liquid metal.
Akari reached out.
The moment her fingers brushed against it, the world lurched.
A sudden pull—like something had grasped her soul—and then—
---
She was somewhere else.
The air was thick, pressing against her skin like an unseen weight. The ground beneath her was smooth, polished like glass, reflecting a sky that did not exist.
A place between realities.
Ahead, a figure stood waiting.

A woman, tall and cloaked in flowing black robes, her face hidden beneath a veil. Her presence was immense, like the very air bent around her existence.
Akari’s instincts screamed at her. This was not a human.
The woman lifted her hand, and the world rippled.

The woman spoke. Her voice was neither soft nor harsh—it simply was.
“You have survived.”
Akari’s grip tightened on her sword. “What do you want from me?”
The Nameless Watcher tilted her head slightly, as if amused. “You misunderstand.”
She gestured, and the space around them changed.
Suddenly—Akari was standing in a different world.
A vast battlefield, ruined and broken.
Mountains lay in rubble. The sky was torn open, revealing endless void. Shadows moved across the land, devouring everything.
And in the distance—a single figure stood against the darkness.
A woman in silver armor, her sword radiating a power Akari could not comprehend.
The Nameless Watcher spoke.
“She was the last.”
Akari felt her heart tighten.
“This is the fate of all who stand against the Veil’s hunger.”
The vision shattered.
She was back in the empty realm. The Watcher stood unmoved.
“Why are you showing me this?” Akari demanded.
The Watcher’s veil shifted, as if she were smiling beneath it.
“Because you have already begun your path.”
Akari frowned. “What path?”
The Watcher took a step forward. The very space trembled at her movement.
“You were chosen by the Veil the moment you entered this world. There is no escape. There is only the way forward.”
Akari swallowed. “And if I refuse?”
The Watcher extended a single hand.
