Into the Unknown - Chapter 1

Putting my face in my hands I let out a long, tired, sigh of relief. I had finally done it, it being writing a page of text that was actually meant to be read by another sentient being, a real bother, truly.

Giving my cheeks a few light slaps and massaging my jaw I looked away from the screen and over to the mess of cables and weird hand made parts, assembled into a hodgepodge that could only barely be called a machine. My machine.

The overall shape was based around a dentist chair I had picked up form a junkyard, the headrest being the most highly modified part. It had been changed into a thick circle of metal going around where the patients head would lie and covered with probes, small circuit boards and a somewhat organised chaos of cables. That wasn’t all of course, the base had been hollowed out of the adjusting mechanism and replaced with a sort of bizarre gyroscope looking thing. All together it looked somewhat terrifying, or beautiful. I thought it was beautiful at least, in that bizarro techy way you know? Nah you probably don’t but i wont hold that against you.

Anywhosal I stood up with a soft, mandatory groan and jumped up and down a few times, limbering up my limbs and getting the blood flow in order, maybe for the last time, my heart racing with eager anticipation. Just because i din’t know if this procedure would kill me or shift my metaphorical soul into another dimension didn’t mean i felt stressed. For once what i was being subjected to was all the way through my own choice, my own design. Everything stemmed from me, and if something blew up and killed me it would for once be my own fault. That thought brought so much comfort that i couldn’t even begin to describe it.

With that comforting feeling welling up inside me i stripped, put my apartment in order and clicked publish on the page i had set up with the message i just finished writing as well as all the technical documents for my experimental procedure. Blinking slowly while breathing deeply for a few moments i clenched my fists and lay down on the bed, carefully making sure not to disturb any of the modifications. After lying there for a few minutes i finally felt ready to take the final step. Mumbling a prayer softly to myself i took my last breath of air on earth and flicked the large switch under my right hand with a loud click.

The gyro began spinning and several beeps sounded out from small speakers, salvaged from server computer chassis. Everything was in order so with a dizzying feeling in my head, totally upending my sense of balance, my closed eyes picking up a brilliant light that wasn’t real, a whooshing sound in my ears if felt myself falling, falling, falling, for an eternity and less than a heartbeat.

  Then nothingness.
