22. Fly like a rock

Once everyone managed to get their brooms on their hands the lesson continued. Madam Hooch began by expining a few css rules as well as the bare basics of broom handling. Funnily enough, different brands of brooms have slightly different handling parameters. Thankfully all of them had to have the standardized basic parameters.

Once that was done with, we were given the command to mount our brooms. It was then that I focused all of my attention on the gryffindor boy Neville. As soon as he mounted his broom I could feel disaster brewing. The broom he had chosen was the one in the worst condition of all. To make matters worse, Nevilles magic has always felt… unstable for a ck of a better word.

As expected, as soon as he mounted the broom, the thing went out of control. However, unlike what I expected, the thing was even more erratic and aggressive than what I had seen in the movies. From the looks of things Neville was barely able to hold onto the thing. It was then that I started debating whether I should get involved.

Looking at madam Hooch from my peripheral vision I could tell she was having trouble locking onto Neville with her wand. Taking into consideration spell speed, casting speed, and the erratic movements of the broom. Chances are no spell would be able to hit it unless a lot of luck is involved.

It was then that things went from bad to worse. While flying over one of the walls of the courtyard, one that so happens to have a statue with a spear pointing upwards, Neville fell from the broom. Out of instinct I infused my brain and eyes with vitality accelerating my percepting making it feel like time slowed down.

Things looked bad, really bad. Neville was falling in such a way the spear would go right through his chest. The most important question being, would it hit the heart or not. A punctured lung, although a grievous and possibly lethal injury can be easily treated in time to save his life. If the spear clips or heavens forbid pierces his heart then I doubt he could be saved.

Once again looking at madam Hooch I could see her lips and wand moving in slow motion. She was trying to cast the arresto momentum spell. She wouldn’t make it. Navil had at most two seconds before being impaled. Her cast speed isn’t fast enough taking into account the spell’s travel time.

Now I was stuck in a dilemma. I could try and save Neville, chances were, I could make it. The problem with that is that I would reveal some of my capabilities. Was the life of an innocent worth my secrets? Especially so, that of a child? I made up my mind at that moment.

Without a second though I channeled as much vitality as I could through my body. At the same time casting a chantless, wandless transfiguration spell onto the broom held on my hand. In the blink of an eye the broom transformed into a bck spear. Moving at speeds no human should be able to accomplish I took aim before throwing the thing like a javelin with all my might.

There was no sonic boom or anything epic like that. I simply ck the strength to pull off something like that, no matter how inhumane my strength actually is. It didn’t matter though. My aim was fwless having reached the statue in an instant destroying its chest allowing the spear it held to fall away as Neville fell on top of the rubble.

Unfortunately for him, the slope atop the wall alongside the rubble made it so he slipped right off the roof. This resulted in him falling from a good ten meters of height or the equivalent of a second floor. Good news? Neville lived and all he had to show for the experience was a sprained hand and ankle. Bad news? I was in a shit ton of pain as my entire right arm suffered from micro fractures and torn muscles.

I gave healing myself some thought before discarding the idea. Being hurt would make the whole thing more believable. Not to mention it would set a beneficial precedent for me. It would be better for others to think there is a physical cost for my actions. This will still put me in the spotlight though, what a bother.

Looking around all my cssmates were looking at me with a mix of awe and fear. How could they not, sure, most of them might not fully understand what I did but they did see me destroying a stone statue with the throw. Madam Hooch for her part, had her priorities right as she quickly ran towards Neville to check on his well being. With a sigh and a wince I followed her. Once she finished checking on Neville I decided to grab her attention.

“Madam Hooch, I would like to come along to the infirmary, that stunt has rendered my right arm unusable for the time being.” Having said that, I lifted the right sleeve of my robe showing my brutalized arm. Nasty rge purple bruises decorated its entire length and while that looked bad enough I knew it was worse than it looked.

As soon as I did that I could hear a lot of them. Looking at my peers from the periphery of my vision I could see quite a few pale faces. Sophia looked like she was about to break into tears and my brother looked like he was a moment away from losing his lunch.

Madam Hooch for her part, although surprised, didn’t look that affected. Taking into account she acts as the referee for most of the hogwarts quidditch matches chances are she has seen much worse than this in the past.

“Do you need help to walk?” I had to focus really hard not to raise a questioning eyebrow. My arm was fucked not my legs, of course I could walk. Then again, a normal child would be in so much pain they wouldn’t be able to stand much less walk. I opted to give her a small nod for an answer.

A while ter of walking next to madam Hooch and a limping Neville we came to the infirmary. I must say, Madam Pomfry is a rather intense woman, especially when it involves her patients. When she saw Neville’s swollen wrist and ankle she instantly got to work checking him out. That is until…

“Pomfrey, I believe she should be your priority for now.” Saying that Pomfrey carefully pulled my right sleeve up showing my arm. Yeah, it looked worse than before now that the blood had time to expand and make the bruises even rger.

“Good heavens what happened?” Unlike with Neville, who was obviously suffering from sprained joints, Pomfry opted for using her wand and diagnostic spells. The magic felt prickly and itchy as it flowed through my arm. Fortunately the uncomfortable feeling didn’t st long.

“Hooch, what happened? This girl is suffering from micro fractures and torn muscles.” Hooch wasted no time expining things from her point of view. The thing is, she didn’t know what happened to me seeing as all her focus had been on trying to save Nevilles life at the time.

Instead, the question was redirected towards me. Seeing an opportunity to weave the truth into what was convenient for me I decided to mix lies with half truths. I told them about the transmutation spell I used on the broom to turn it into a spear. As for the bodily enhancements. I just made something up about accidental magic.

“I just felt like I could do it so I did.” I boiled it all down to that. Being a kid has its advantages. Anyway, after that or rather, during it Madam Hooch began the treatment pn. For Nevill it consisted of an anti-infmmatory potion as well as one that incentivizes healing. For me on the other hand, I was given a plethora of concoctions as my arm was put in a cast.

“You will need that while the potions do their work. Since your arm wasn’t outright broken it shouldn’t take that long. Come back here tomorrow and I will run a diagnostic spell. If by then your arm is healed we can take that off.” Nodding along with the instruction madam Pomfry gave I was let out of the infirmary.

As luck would have it, right outside the pce I came face to face with the golden trio plus Sophia. It was then that I realized I had spent a few hours inside the infirmary. Sure, the whole drinking potions and getting my arm in a cast didn’t take that long but madam Pomfrey wouldn’t let me leave until she expined everything that I could and could not do while hurt.

“Silver! Are you alright!?” As soon as Sophia saw me she jogged over to my side, her eyes quickly jumping from my own to my arm and back. With a fond smile I told her a resumed version of what madam Pomfrey said.

“...I should be back in full health by tomorrow afternoon at the earliest or in three days by the stest.” Having heard that I could almost physically see the tension leaving Sophia’s shoulders.

“Hello Silver, how about Neville, is he alright?” As the golden trio caught up Harry asked me having heard what I said to Sophia.

“Yeah, he is in a better condition than I am to tell the truth. Just a sprained ankle and wrist from the fall. Madam Pomfry said that he should be fine by tomorrow morning. Although she wants to keep him for the night, to make sure he won’t put any strain on the joints.” Like with Sophia the golden trio rexed knowing that their house mate was fine.

With their top priority out of the way, the conversation quickly shifted to what had happened and what I had done. I had to feed them the same story I gave madam Hooch and madam Pomfry. Even so, Sophia’s eyes shone like she was seeing her favorite heroine. Harry looked pensive while Ron unsurprisingly looked at me with suspicion. Hermione for her part began mumbling under her breath probably trying to figure out if she had ever read of something like this happening.

It was my good fortune that I was released from the infirmary at around dinner time. To tell the truth, I was starved. The only unfortunate thing was that the tables were abuzz with my tales of my stunt. Well, at least the first year part of them.

“I still can’t believe you could act like nothing happened.” Hearing Patil comment I could do nothing but smile wryly as I offered an answer.

“Well, remember that I can barely feel pain. Sure, I knew my arm was a wreck but it didn’t hurt to the point I couldn’t handle it. Not to mention that panicking or crying wouldn’t have helped anyway.” Like that dinner continued until it was time for curfew.

Back in my room while ying on my bed looking at the ceiling I began thinking. What happened today shouldn’t have happened. Then again, I shouldn’t exist nor should Sophia. Taking into consideration that the butterfly effect is a thing a fart from when I was a baby could have very well been the cause for what happened today.

This more than anything cemented in my mind that things were changing from what I knew and they would continue doing so more and more in the future. If I hadn’t acted Neville could have died. Who knows what kind of consequences that would have had for the future. In the end, my pn to stay by the wayside as I learn all that magic has to offer might not be as viable as I had thought.

There was another problem with the events of today. I had used vitality, a lot of it. I still had quite a bit in my reserves but they wouldn’t st forever. I would need to start hunting sooner rather than ter. Although not tonight. The cast would get in the way and removing it was out of the question. I had been preparing for this for a while anyway so it was about time I did so.

Now the real question is, what should I hunt. I had pnned to hunt unicorns since they for sure would give me a lot of vitality. The only problem with that is that baldymort is also doing the same so things could get iffy. Not to mention the centaurs would hunt down my ass if I did so anyway.

Of course there were other creatures, magical and not in the forest. In the end, I have been toying with the idea of hunting down acromantus. Sure, the spiders being arthropods would be less efficient as a source of vitality than mammals for compatibility reasons. Even so, there are so many of the things in the forest that the waste can easily be made up by sheer quantity. Then again, I would need to make a device or something for efficiency's sake taking into account there is only so much liquid my stomach can handle.

“Alright so the pn is to hunt small animals for the time being until I figure out a way to extract and concentrate vitality from the acromantus.” Having made up my mind I closed my eyes. I would start my hunts once the cast is taken off. Here is to hoping nothing else will happen for a while after.
