Professor of Demography (1)

  March 8, 2010

Rumors were heard that a new professor would enter the Department of Humanities at Minju University. Students were all in a mess. Some female students heard rumors that the newly appointed professor was handsome, and the some classmates came from the next department to see him. However, male students were upset here. Some male students even commented that the professor was bent on extremist ideas.

Then, the professor finally opened the door and came in. All the girls who came in expecting a good-looking face were disappointed. He had a large muscular body but was wearing glasses and his face looked like Ma Dong-seok. The boys peeled the professor, calling him like a gangster. But the professor didn't mind. He cleared his throat and introduced himself.

"Hello, I'm Gamamusa, the new professor of humanities and sciences."

  ...

Gamamusa gave the cook something to eat. Unlike the surprisingly scary beginning, he communicated well with the cook. The cook's name is 'Park Sung-jae', just a food and nutrition department student who is known as a genius at the university. Gamamusa gave him dried meat from the combat food he had packed. It didn't taste very good and was hard, but it was barely edible when soaked in water.

"Mister, what bag is that? Did you pack everything there?" Park pointed to the bag that the samurai brought. The bag was quite big, so it could be crouched down by a person. Gamamusa waved his hands as if not to care.

"You'll get hurt if you know it. By the way, you seem to have quite a talent for food and nutrition, so will you come and see me when you're done with your military service? I will treat you well as the chef of our North korean regime," Park Sung-jae naturally declined. He even persuaded Gamamusa to surrender, but he ignored her. He kept looking toward the outpost with his telescope, and then said a word to Sungjae.

"I've already lived in Korea. I've had enough of it. There are probably a lot of people who are surprised to hear that I've worked here."

  ...

Gamamusa prepared the class materials and wrote 'Demography' in chalk on a blackboard. Students began to keep an eye on what he would say.

"Maybe there are a lot of friends who have heard my rumors. I'm sure you've heard a lot of conflicting stories, like my face is handsome or my thoughts are extreme. There is one thing I want to make clear here. I don't have a good face, I don't have an extreme idea. But I'm really smart, so most professors can be seduced by my intelligence. Keep that in mind, everyone."

The boys had enough of it. But the professor continued the lecture without hesitation, saying, "Demography, what is that? It's a study of population. I'm sure many of you have heard about the low birth rate in Korea. What do you think about this?"

A female student raised her hand. "The low birth rate is a serious threat to our country. The same is true of other developed countries, but the threat is especially serious in this country. Our population may be halved if something does not happen."

He nodded. "You're right. Our population might halve. It might lead to a larger proportion of the elderly. However, there is one thing we overlook. It is the fact that the population is eventually increased and decreased by nature."

The students were puzzled by what the professor said. The professor wrote a fraction on the blackboard with a chalk. The professor used the word 'food' on the numerator and used the word 'population' on the denominator. He continued to preach. "Humans cannot survive without food. Therefore, the premise is that humans exist only when there is food. It's a simple fact."

He wrote the equation on the right side of the fraction and then wrote a fraction again. This time, he wrote the denominator '25' and the numerator '50' on the top. "Our food self-sufficiency rate is about 50 percent. In short, it means that our population is 50 million and we have 25 million food to feed that population. So we have to ask one question. How do we feed the other 25 million people that we can't feed in this country?"
