The South Annex

A few days later Rinaye woke up to Nina squealing and shaking her awake.

"Cutie! You won't believe what happened!" She paused for a few seconds. "We're MOVING!"

"Huh?" Rinaye mumbled still half asleep.

Nina reached into her small bed and picked up the one year old child, swinging her in her arms high in the air.

"Nina!" Edna shouted. "Put the girl down!"

"Sorry, Ma'am..." Nina lowered Rinaye back into her bed.

"Why you like this, Nina?" Sabrina commented. "Anyway, just like Nina said, we're moving to a new building!"

Rinaye rubbed her eyes open, "Where?" she asked.

"The South Annex!" Nina chimed in. "I'll admit it's not as luxurious as other buildings here, but it's much better than here!" She booped Rinaye's nose in excitement.

"If you are excited, then start packing up already!" Edna prodded, beckoning to the items that all needed to be carried to the new living space. Complying, Nina and Sabrina started packing up the small amount of the clothing that Rinaye had, and placing the tiny wooden toys in baskets and pretty soon, everything in her room was all packed up. The trio dressed Rinaye up in the fanciest outfit they had, a cute little white dress with some ruffles on the edges.

"Awwww! She looks like a little lady!" Nina squealed.

"Technically, she is a little lady," Sabrina remarked.

"Stop lazing around, you two!" Edna snarled. "Let's get moving!" Rinaye was placed in a big basket filled with cushy blankets that Nina held along with a suitcase labeled, Nina's Things :) . Sabrina held her own suitcase along with various baskets full of children's clothing and toys. Edna held her suitcase and a basket full of blankets. They all trailed out of the room with a determination and they exited into the garden.

Rinaye spotted the red hair boy from a few days ago, he saw her and quickly looked away.

"What's his problem?" She thought as she was carried away.

The garden was the same as always, enchantingly beautiful. The flowers had dewdrops on their petals like embroidered beads decorating a soft fabric and the grasses were lush and green. The path they walked on was far from the main path, the one decorated with stones and carefully curated flower beds, but the flowers were just as beautiful from a different point of view. They followed the path until it became a dirt road following the edge of the forest that rested in the middle of the estate. Rinaye hadn't noticed it before, but the forest was guarded by men in armor.

She pointed to the forest and asked, "What's that?"

"Oh, that's the place where the dukedom stores their treasures. Some of it is very dangerous, so they are in the middle of the forest their location not known to anyone but the duke." Nina responded.

  "Like what?" Rinaye asked.

"Oh, things like weapons, items with demonic energy, and really precious things that people would fight to get their hands on! The duke's family is famous for collecting and containing these kinds of weapons, you know! I even heard that the duke has the capability to capture a demon ALIVE and keep it in that forest, if he wanted to." She replied with a smile.

"Wow, that's pretty cool." Rinaye answered with awe.

"Yeah, I know! You're going to have to get used to the sight of the guards though, because...! We're living right over there!" Nina pointed to a medium sized building near the edge of the forest. It was rather fancy, like a Victorian style apartment building. It had a small garden surrounding it and housing around it, supposedly to house the guards. It was rather quaint, but lovely. Rinaye had seen houses like this in her past life, but never lived in one. They were worth millions in the big cities, like San Francisco. She couldn't believe that she would be living in such a pretty place.

Even the door was beautiful, old painted wood that had such a quaint feeling about it. The door opened with a creak, and Rinaye was greeted with the faces of several new people, all in the standard maid uniforms that Nina, Sabrina, and Edna wore.

"Is that the little lady?" one asked.

"I think it is." another answered.

"why is she so tiny?" another looked on with disgust.

Rinaye climbed out of the basket she had been riding in and hopped up to the maids.

"Hello! It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance." She cheerfully said, she thought she should be polite to these new people after all.

  "..."

"Who does she think she is? One maid who stood near the back whispered to the others with disdain. She's just a blemish on the duke's family. He told us himself!"

"Just look at her clothes! The only authority she has is because of her father, and her father abandoned her! Why should we have to serve her? All this does is create more work for us!" Another whispered back.

  Suddenly Edna stepped forward.

"All we ask is that we three have the resources to care for the child. That is all. We will not create more work for the rest of you. We will make her food as we do our own, her clothing comes out of the small budget the duke has given us, and her room will be off limits anyways, so you will not have to do any more cleaning."

The maids murmured amongst themselves until a woman parted the crowd. It was obvious that the other maids either respected her or feared her from their compliance and expressions. She faced the four of them and spoke.
