The Girl in the Tower

The Duke sat in his office, the morning light streamed through his window illuminating his restless face. His eyes fixated on a small portrait of a young woman with long brown hair and emerald green eyes, a large smile on her face. She wore a plain dress carefully embroidered with love and care. The Duke looked at her wistfully, missing something he never had in the first place. A knock on his door turned his attention away from the portrait and to the maid that entered.

  "What is it? He asked.

"Pardon my intrusion, Your Grace, but there is something you might want to hear." The maid informed him.

  "What is it?" He repeated.

"Well, the young lady's room has, well, changed." She said.

"What do you mean, changed?" He questioned.

"Umm, everything is gone, and has been replaced with something else." She responded, warily.

"What?" He stood up. "Take me there."

"Yes, Your Grace," the maid opened the door and walked down the hallway with The Duke in tow.

Outside the young lady's room, there were several servants murmuring and whispering amongst themselves. When they saw the Duke, the small crowd parted, letting the Duke pass through. He swiftly walked forward and opened the door.

What he saw was just weird. He had told his aid to prepare a room a little girl was sure to like, he even checked it before she was brought there. The room he saw was the color of a rain forest. Green was everywhere, and to add insult to injury, the girl was still asleep in her newly acquired bed without a care in the world. He closed the door and stepped outside the room.

"Who escorted her here last night?" He asked the group gathered outside.

"I did." A burly maid stepped forward.

"Was her room like this last time you saw it?" He questioned.

"No," the maid responded. "I suspect it happened while she was asleep."

His expression darkened, his eyes narrowed. "I see." He told her. "Keep an eye on this child. If anything strange happens again, tell me immediately."

"Yes, Your Grace," the group said together.

He walked back to his office lost in thought. How on earth could a child born from a perfect person be so strange and complicated. It was becoming more and more likely that he would have to prepare a different kind of housing for his .

Rinaye woke up with a smile on her face. The sunlight glowed from the window and settled on the things in the room. She had a wonderful rest. She was excited. Allison told her she saw a library in the house on her way to Rinaye's room so that's where Rinaye would go today. She needed her terrible romance novels. She didn't even care if they weren't Yuri, she needed anything to satisfy her yearning to kick her legs and giggle at cheesy lines of dialogue. She opened the door and skipped down the hallway humming to herself some random pop song from her old life. She eventually found the library in a remote corner of the mansion.

The walls were lined with books on top of books. Rinaye was in paradise. Even if she didn't find her beloved romance novels, she could still find plenty of other books from other genres to keep her entertained.

After having read a few books she found one that really caught her interest. The title was unreadable due to weathering but the contents were fabulous. It was a love story about two random people but that wasn't what caught Rinaye's interest. The villain of this book was a young woman who had been locked in a tower from making a contract with an insanely powerful demon. It was really interesting and very sad. The girl had been abused since a young age and the only friend she had was this demon. The demon had no evil intentions at all and just wanted to be with her friend but when their friendship was found out the girl was locked in a magical tower and the demon's despair from being separated form her friend caused the world to start decaying. The heroes were told that the girl in the tower was commanding the demon to destroy the world. So they fought the demon in order to access what they thought was the mastermind. When the girl in the tower saw that her only friend had been killed she committed suicide with her dead friend's own weapon.

Even if the story was depicted from the heroes' point of view, that secondary story was very clear to Rinaye and she most definitely cried at the end of the book. She even started to write a fan fiction of what would happen if they didn't die in her head.

  Adorable.
