Chapter 9: “Blood Rush: First Encounter with a Variant”

The first zombie was only three meters away.

Gripping the axe with both hands, I raised it above my head and waited.

Six... five... four... My heart pounded faster with each second. I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself.

  Three... two... one...

The moment the zombie stepped within reach—its head just above the table—I swung the axe down with full force. The bde buried deep into its skull with a sickening crunch.

I tried to yank it free, but it was stuck.

  No time to struggle.

Letting go, I created another axe.

I quickly scanned the hallway. The closest zombie was just two meters away, while two more were four meters behind it. Further down, I caught movement—three additional zombies had joined the group.

  Six more to go.

For a moment, a thought crossed my mind: I could retreat to the door, stab them through a small opening, and take them down slowly. But... where was the fun in that?

  A thrill ran through me.

I didn't even notice when those extra zombies had joined in, but their presence gave me an idea.

Without hesitation, I hurled my axe at the closest zombie, aiming for its head.

  Thud!

It struck its body instead. Not a kill shot, but it would slow it down.

The hit zombie fell backward, momentarily out of the fight. Without wasting time, I locked onto another target.

I threw another axe at the next one charging toward me. Thwack!—it struck right in the head.

A faint glow floated from its body and seeped into my forehead.

Second kill. Five more to go.

I shifted my focus to the two zombies moving in sync at the back. Their movements were eerily identical—maybe they had the same agility.

I hurled my fourth axe, aiming for a clean hit.

  Miss.

But instead of flying past, the axe struck the arm of the zombie behind them. It staggered slightly from the impact but didn’t slow down.

  They're still coming.

The twin-like zombies were now only three meters away.

I adjusted my aim, realizing how hard it was to nd a perfect headshot. Instead, I aimed for the body.

  Success.

The impact disrupted their synchronized movement, causing the left zombie to stumble and stop in its tracks.

I quickly raised my axe, preparing to strike the right one.

Meanwhile, the closest zombie had nearly passed the desk, its head just beyond the edge.

I took two steps back, positioning the axe to my right side, five meters from the ground. Then, with all my strength, I swung horizontally—

  North to South.

  Thud!

The axe embedded itself deep into the zombie’s skull, but instead of a clean cut, it got stuck, stopping my swing halfway. The force of the impact pushed the zombie sideways, making it fall to the left, the axe still lodged in its head.

I quickly created another axe, gripping it tightly as I took a long, steady breath.

The zombie shoved the table forward by about two feet, its movements clumsy but forceful.

I scanned the area, trying to locate every zombie around me.

The zombie that had fallen was getting back up and was now about 3 meters away. The closest zombie, which was 2 meters away, was already advancing toward me. The one that had been struck in the body and the one trying to stand up were both also 3 meters away, just like the fallen one. Finally, the st zombie I had struck in the arm was 2 meters away, right behind the closest one.

I targeted the zombie 3 meters away on the right side to reduce more of its movement, but it was a big miss. I quickly refocused my gaze on the closest one. But before I even readied myself, I noticed the st zombie was almost at the same distance as the two in front of it just a second ago.

  'No freaking way...'

I squinted my eyes and used [Identification].

Looking at the screen, I muttered, 'It's LV 3. Why is it just 2 levels higher than the others, but it's much faster? You know what, f*** your mother.'

I ran back to the door, not even trying to give the middle finger because the closest zombie had started dragging the desk.
