Su Wen was the third to head over for skill training. Ni Xuanya was faster than him, likely due to the mud ointment applied to her Nidoran♀’s back at noon.
After answering some students’ questions, Wu Yan kept moving between the training area and the energy absorption zone, checking if anyone needed help.
When Su Wen finished his energy training with Charmander, Wu Yan teased, "Oh, slower than I expected."
"Ha ha," Su Wen rolled his eyes and ignored Wu Yan. Csses ended at 6 PM, and it was already past 4:30. He needed to focus on Charmander’s skill training.
Seeing Su Wen’s indifference, Wu Yan didn’t leave but instead leaned in and asked, "Got any questions?"
Su Wen thought for a moment and indeed had one. "Teacher Wu, what do you think is the best direction for Charmander’s training?"
Instead of answering immediately, Wu Yan gnced at Chen You, who was practicing ?Thunder Shock with Rotom.
"Chen You!" Wu Yan called out.
Chen You, who had been keeping an ear on Su Wen and Wu Yan’s conversation while watching Rotom, responded instinctively, "Yes, Teacher? What’s up?"
Wu Yan gestured for him to come closer. "Come here."
When Chen You approached, Wu Yan asked, "Do you know why there’s such a big gap between your Rotom and Su Wen’s Charmander, even though they both recently broke through to Tier 1?"
Chen You had a rough idea. "Is it because of move mastery, Teacher?"
"Exactly," Wu Yan said. "Su Wen’s Charmander has a far better understanding and mastery of moves than your Rotom. That’s what you need to work on next—summarizing and learning move series."
Move series refer to moves of the same category, such as ?Scratch, ?Dragon Cw, ?Shadow Cw, and ?Metal Cw, which all fall under cw-type moves.
Simirly, ?Fire Punch, ?Thunder Punch, and ?Bullet Punch are punch-type moves.
Some abilities only affect specific move series. For example, the ability ?Bulletproof provides high immunity to ball- and bullet-type moves.
Su Wen pondered for a moment. "Teacher, I’ve seen a theory online that moves within the same series are easier to master. Is that true?"
"Correct," Wu Yan said, surprised that Su Wen knew this. "This theory was proposed by my mentor, but it conflicted with the popur move uniqueness theory at the time and was eventually shelved."
Chen You chimed in, "Huh? I think it makes sense that moves in the same series are easier to learn."
Wu Yan chuckled. "Research isn’t about what seems reasonable. It requires repeated verification and testing. Centuries ago, people thought a heavy iron ball would fall faster than a light one."
"So which move series should we focus on?" Su Wen trusted that Wu Yan wouldn’t teach them an unverified theory.
The truth was, the evidence was insufficient. While Wu Yan’s mentor had collected a lot of data, practical tests showed that Pokémon who had mastered several cw-type moves didn’t find it significantly easier to learn another one.
Practice is the only way to test the truth, so the theory was abandoned. However, Wu Yan’s mentor ter discovered that the difficulty in mastering cw-type moves might stem from insufficient control over elemental energy.
For example, Charmander, a Fire-type, would find it easier to learn ?Fire Fang than ?Dragon Cw because it doesn’t have the Dragon-type, making it harder to control Dragon-type energy.
Thus, Wu Yan’s mentor shifted focus to attribute research. For instance, finding a Fire/Ghost-type Pokémon and having it learn ?Fire Fang before ?Shadow Fang to gather evidence.
Unfortunately, such Pokémon are rare. For example, Chandelure is Fire/Ghost-type but can’t learn ?Fire Fang or ?Shadow Fang. Simirly, Aegissh is Steel/Ghost-type and can learn ?Shadow Cw but not ?Metal Cw, making evidence collection extremely challenging.
Despite this, the theory is close to being proven, thanks to Wu Yan’s mentor’s relentless efforts. It’s just waiting to be published.
So Wu Yan felt it was fine to introduce the theory early.
When Su Wen asked which move series to focus on, Wu Yan gave him a complicated look. "Actually, like Cyndaquil, Charmander excels at learning Fire-type projectile moves. But I feel your Charmander also has a talent for close combat. Why not go for a mixed attacker approach?"
A mixed attacker bances physical and special attacks. The downside is divided focus, but the upside is fewer weaknesses. For example, against a Blissey, which has high Special Defense but low Defense, it’s harder to counter.
"Sure," Su Wen had no objections. He’d originally pnned to go for a mixed attacker approach, especially since he had a Charizardite X.
"As for Chen You, focus on special attacks. Rotom, both before and after evolution, has far better Special Attack potential than Physical Attack. Focus on Electric- and Ghost-type moves, with Electric as the main," Wu Yan said decisively, leaving no room for Chen You to argue.
After addressing Su Wen and Chen You’s questions, Wu Yan left to assist other students. Compared to Su Wen and Chen You, most of the other novice trainers were the real headache for Wu Yan.
"Fire Fang, huh..." Su Wen looked down, deep in thought. Charmander’s level-up moves didn’t include ?Fire Fang, meaning he’d need to buy a TM for it.
The afternoon’s monotonous training wore down most students’ patience. Sitting there watching their Pokémon train was incredibly boring.
But Wu Yan, wanting students to bond more closely with their Pokémon, forbade them from doing anything else while their Pokémon trained.
As a result, bored students either bombarded Wu Yan with questions, nearly fell asleep, or pondered the meaning of life. Su Wen, however, spent half the afternoon helping Charmander train and the other half honing skills. When his Aura energy ran low, he’d sit and rest, watching other students get scolded. It was quite an eventful day for him.
When Su Wen and the others returned to the cssroom to pack up and leave, Mu Hanzhi stopped Su Wen and Chen You.
"Come, sit. Take a look at this document."
Mu Hanzhi handed them two thick stacks of A4 paper. The cover read, "Regarding Resource Allocation for Su Wen (Chen You) During High School."
