Beginnings

Jane opened her eyes to the world with a frown on her face as an alarm meant for someone else woke her up from the only place her mind couldn't worry. She turned to her side and watched the phone play a reversed lulluby while it's owner slept like a baby besides it."

She sets the alarm, and I always end up waking up instead." She muttered under her breath and streached her arms before sitting up.

Thewind blew its way through the thin brown curtains while the sun rose from the great horizons of her European city, a place she called home after being born to immigrats from Africa. It's Ray's made its way to all the corners of the corridor like room that possessed miniature sized beds by each sides of the open windows. Jane dropped her feat to the ground and briefly walked towards the light while the wind hardly swept a stand of her kinky jetblack coils. She took in light breaths while she stared at the dark clear blue skies from the highest window on the three storey building. With a smirk, she drew the curtains open and let the sunlight penetrate it's way into every hidden part of the room yet, her roommate remained as still as a corpse. Jane sighed and headed into the bathroom, too plagued by the thought of her last 2nd year nursing exam to turn off the alarm. After a long while, she was dressed in an all white top and trouser nursing uniform with her hair combed and packed in a high puffy pony tail. She sighed and rubbed her temples when her eyes landed on her roommate, that laid still and exactly where she had left her. Her hairy head buried in her pillow while she hung her pale arms and legs around like a corpse in a crimescene. Jane walked to her side and tapped her multiple times before she could even get a murmured response.

"Wake up Salma, your last paper isn't going to write itself!" She yelled in her ears and watched her jolt awake.

"Why do you always have to act like a witch, when we read together till 3:00am in the morning." She groaned and rubbed her drowsy eyes.

"Yes we did. But you have to go and get dressed now, unless you want to fail."

"Read, wakeup, read, wakeup. that's all I've ever heard from you for the past two weeks. When will you tell me to sleep?" Asked Salma as she rolled her eyes at her and forced herself out of the bed with her shorts hanging loosely on her thick waist while Jane watched her walk towards the bathroom with a slight smile."Maybe tonight."

Minutes passed as they venturing to their prestigious nursing school to write their exams, they however wasted no time to chit chat with any of their colleges as they took the first bus they could find home. Jane could only watch the world go by from her window plagued with thoughts of all she had to accomplish while Salma laid her head on her shoulders and slept soundly besides her.She however chuckled as Salma almost collided with the sit in front of them when the bus pulled a hard stop.

"It's our stop." Jane confessed with a smirk as she watched her groan and stomp her way out of the bus.She trailed behind her and walked down towards the broad alley of her neighborhood.Jane watched gazed up into all the rooms on her building before walking in and heading up the stairs to third floor, she found Salma at the door of their room, twisting the keys until it clicked at it's last turned. They both bursed through the door of their apartment with their eyes locked on their beds and reddened with exaustion. Each made their way to their beds and slumped as their jelly weak knees gave out.Jane jolted awake after few seconds and stripped herself of her clothes while Salma turned to her side immediately her ears picked up the sounds of her stomping feet and heavy breaths. She watched her rake through her cupboard with furrowed brows.

"Where are you going to, this time?"

"I have to go and get a job today so I can resume tomorrow."

"Weren't you fired last week? Can't you rest for today so we could go together tomorrow? We have all summer, Jane"

"No, I need to go. I saw a new coffee shop in town and I need to apply. Don't worry, I'll put in a word for you." Said Jane as she wiggled through her hoddie and got her arms in before pulling her baggie blue jeans through her slim hourglass waist

"Fine, just take it easy and promise me you'll come right back."

"I promise." Jane replied before dashing through the door and slamming it shut.

"Easy, Jane we haven't paid rent yet." Yelled Salma before submerging into her covers.

"That girl needs to take things easy."

Jane took her bicycle and rode it down her busy street as she kept her head straight while everyone present in her neighborhood either lived their lives behind the ancient brick walls or out in the open for everyone to see.She stared ahead with only one place in mind as the wind brushed through her dark caramel skin. A smile creept on her lips when she sighted the coffee shop from afar, standing like a glasshouse in the midst of brick shops. Jane slowed down and dropped her feet to the ground after getting off the bicycle. She walked it to the side of the shop and chained it to a nearby mailbox before standing still as she looked around and took in deep breaths while multiple people walked past her.Jane brushed her hand through her hoodie and blocked every thought of not getting hired before matching into the shop. The bell at the door rang immediately she walked through, her eyes scanned every corner while she fought the urge to run her fingers through the black leather seats placed around in columbs. She however tried to reach out to touch the beautiful flowers arrayed with tiny lights dangling over her head, but withdrew her arm when she noticed a young man at the end of the shop. Jane walked towards the glass counter and met him setting containers of sweets on the wooden shelf behind him. His curly ginger brown hair dangled around his head while his round eyes peared beneath his thick brows immediately he turned around and caught her gaze.

"Hi, I would like to ask if the vacancy is still available."

"Well yes, it is. My boss is in his office right now so you can go into the door by your left and apply. He's not so bad, just always try look him in the eye and he'll find you trust worthy" He confessed with a light smile that made the freckles on his cheeks visible to her eyes.

  "Thank you." She replied.

Jane took made her way to the door and gave it a soft knock before stepping in after she got a response. She walked into the office and stared at the man sitting by the desk at the close end of the room as the thin walls of the room made it easy to find him."Are you going to stand there all day, or will you take a sit?" The man stared over his round glasses and watched her sit.

"Are you here for the job?" "Yes sir, I promise am a very hard worker and i've worked with multiple shops in the past."

"Alright, well I only have one rule here. You can't come late and you can't miss your shift no matter what happens. I don't care if you fall sick or someone dies but you might as well stay at home and know you are fired if you do." He stated with a deafening stillness in his voice while he held her gaze.

"Yes sir. I have no problem with that.""One more thing, you'll be working six hours a day and get paid the end of every week, so walk up to my office and get your pay."

"Alright sir but how much will I get?"

"Some dollars a week, non negotiable."He dropped his gaze back to his register while she thought long and hard about her pay. As little as it seemed, she had no choice but to accept it.

  "Alright sir, I accept."

"Alright kid, sign here." He dropped a slip in front of her eyes and watched her read through every line before taking a deep breath as she took his pen and signed."Welcome kid, Work starts at 6:00am sharp, don't be late."

"Thank you sir, are there any more vacancies? I have a friend that also needs a job.""Bring her tomorrow and I'll see what I can do."

"Thank you sir" Jane replied with a warm smile and stood to her feet. She took his hand and firmly shook it before walking out of his office. She walked towards the door, but halted her tracks when the guy by the counter called out to her."Am sorry I forgot to say thanks for the tip"He smiled at her and said "I understand, I guess we are co workers now, miss?"

  "Jane and you are?"

  "Malik."

"Alright, Malik, I have to go now. See you tomorrow." She replied and briefly walked to the door.

"Hey, stop there." She screamed, after she caught a guy hooded in black loosing the chains off her bicycle. She ran after him while he hopped on her Bic and rode as fast as he could through the multitudes of people that screamed and quickly moved out of his way. She trailed him for miles until the numbness in the legs started kick in as she stopped in her tracks and watched him ride away with blurry eyes while heaving deep breaths. She however flinched when a car popped out from the left side of the crossroad and knocked into the air and off her bicycle. She watched him hit the ground while she ran to the scene to find out the damage done to her bicycle. She crouched besides her bicycle while the man in the car ran towards the guy to see if he was alright, but he pushed him away and ran towards an alley while the man called out for him to stop.Jane could feel her throat painfully constrict while she scanned her bicycle, the car had crushed it into rubbles.Yet she could only wish his bones had broken instead.
