Chapter 26: Dungeon’s Rewards

Atlas was instantly bombarded with messages, but he ignored them and just lay on the ground for a few minutes, basking in the joy of what he accomplished. Parts of it had been easy, other parts had been hard, but ultimately, it was just plain fun. Sure, he had been risking his life, but who said you couldn’t still have fun while risking your life?

He slowly dragged himself off of the ground and hopped through the portal, appearing right outside of the dungeon in the grove. Whistling pleasantly to himself, he started to crack open the many, many notifications waiting for him.

Atlas screamed in both pain and euphoria, as pure, unbridled power suffused his every drop of blood, every nanometer of skin, hair, bone and covered him from head to toe in white blinding light. He felt mana rushed through him, creating pathways throughout his body, the mana looped through him before stabbing into his heart, causing him to cough up blood.

But the mana wasn’t done just yet.

It went through his heart and then proceeded to impact all of his major organs at high speed, causing Atlas to cough up blood and black impurities. First his lungs, then his kidneys, liver, large and small intestines, stomach and many others that Atlas didn’t know the name for. He felt like he was spectating his body from the inside, following the stream of pure mana. His mana was cleaning him. It finally shot upwards, splitting in two before ramming into his eyes. He wailed in pain as blood and black fluid dripped from his eyes.

Atlas rapidly blinked his eyes as feeling returned to his body. Everything appeared as a blurry smear before Atlas was able to focus on his surroundings. He felt powerful, and if he would be able to go through the dungeon again, he would crush it like a bug. Before he was able to open his stats however, he was hit with two other notifications. One that was completely unexpected. And one that was… interesting

Soulbound Item, Reapers Suit has been upgraded after experiencing a dungeon with you and absorbing the blood of minotaurs. Reapers Suit (A), is now Potent Reapers Suit (S).

Reapers suit: S grade. This suit cannot be destroyed, but it only blocks a small amount of damage received. All reaper abilities are four times as effective while wearing this suit. When blood is absorbed by the suit, the user's health and mana will be restored depending on the quality of blood absorbed.

Atlas was pleasantly surprised. He had been wearing the suit notstop, as he had absolutely nothing else to wear in its stead. It was good that it cleaned itself, otherwise it would be a problem by now. But it was the second notification that interested him more.

Mana pathways created! Rarity - Common

  LUCKY BONUS!

Mana pathways upgraded! Rarity - Common -> Rare

Mana pathways: Rarity - Rare: Your body has become much more powerful at harnessing the chaotic powers of mana. Each rarity of pathways unlocks a new benefit. With each higher rarity possessing all the benefits of the rarities below it.

Trash: Your control over mana is affected by your Intelligence and Wisdom stats combined and divided by four. (Current is 303% control, where 100% is the norm for beings without mana pathways)

Basic: You can choose a different aspect of your mana to upgrade. Potency, Quantity, Quality, Regeneration Speed, and Control. (When upgraded by another rarity, the upgrade is better.)

Common: Your mana regeneration is doubled. (You regenerate the same amount of mana in 30 minutes as when it was 1 hour. You could also take it to mean that your Intelligence now gives you 20 mana per stat point in Intellegence.)

Uncommon: You now get one point of mana for every one point in your other stats. (Strength, Dexterity, Endurance, Constitution and Wisdom)

Rare: Choose one of the three options. 1: Your mana is purified when it enters your body, halving your regeneration speed, but quadrupling the efficiency of your mana. 2: Your total mana pool is halved but it is now 10 times as potent. 3: You regenerate mana four times as fast but at the cost of having half as potent mana.

Atlas stared in shock as the notification. Why exactly had he gotten this? It hadn’t been shown on the rewards, and he hadn’t done whatever had happened to his mana on purpose…

Luckily, the system could now answer some of his questions.

Whenever you gain more than 1000 points in all of your stats, your body fuses with mana more intimately, causing mana pathways to form in your body. You also gain some other benefits for reaching this many stat points.

Atlas nodded to himself. So that was the reason. Then he paused in shock. 1000 in all stats? He quickly opened his status sheet, not wanting to wait any more.

Atlas was absolutely flabbergasted. The first thing he noticed was his absolutely monstrous stats. They were all around 1,300 and he still had 200 stat points to spend. The next thing he noticed was his status screen now showed his mana and mana pathways, along with two other resources.

“System, what are life force and stamina?” Atlas asked, already having an idea but wanting to double check.

Life force is your Constitution times 10, and stamina is your Endurance times 10. You have always had these, but they did not show up on your status as they were too low, they appeared when both of those stats passed 1,000. Life force is now “Health” in classic video games, if life force reaches 0, that does not necessarily mean you are dead, just that you have expended all of it.

Life force is similar to healing. If you were to get a scratch on your arm, a certain amount of life force would be used to help heal it more quickly than your body can usually handle, but now can through using life force. However, it is not instant or very powerful. It takes something like 50 life force just to heal a simple cut at about 4 cm long and ? cm deep. The higher your total life force is however, the more miraculous things it can pull off. If it becomes high enough, it is possible to regrow a major organ such as your heart.

Stamina is much the same, but instead of healing you, it refreshes you. Higher endurance does not mean you can run forever without getting tired, but instead that you are constantly being relieved of that tiredness and so your energy stays high. The more strenuous tasks you do, the more stamina is drained. Like life force, it is not very powerful with low amounts of it, it is only when you reach the 10’s of billions and higher that it becomes awesome to watch.

All three resources are recharged differently. Mana is fully charged within an hour, but it is also seen as perhaps the weakest resource. That is not to say that it is weak, just that Life Force and Stamina are better. Both life force and stamina take far longer to charge however, making all of them about equal in value if adding things such as regeneration.

It takes 8 hours of rest to fully refresh Stamina, and it takes 16 hours of rest to fully regenerate Life force. The hours do not have to be all at once, as 1 hour of sleep restores one eighth of your Stamina and one sixteenth of your health.

The system went quiet, apparently done with its rant about the different resources. Honestly… That had been a lot of information, and all of it very useful. It had changed how he understood the stats in a good way, making it easier to know what each stat did. He still didn’t fully understand Wisdom, but knew that it had something to do with both potency and control of mana.

He had used all of his free points while waiting, adding 50 to all his stats except for his two highest, Strength and Dexterity.

He had also noticed a new addition to his status page, a new title that he didn’t know what it did.

Fate Breaker: You have defied fate in a multitude of ways. Getting lucky and evolving skills and abilities at very fortunate times, doing things that were meant to be impossible, and breaking your limits again and again. You have broken Fate’s hold on you and strove to become something more, something better, and from that endless pursuit, you have gained power beyond what your level implies. +50% chance of lucky bonus, +10% chance for Insane lucky bonus, and +.001% chance for Worldshaking lucky bonus. Slightly improves the chance of Lucky bonus. (Absorbs Title [Lucky])

Atlas gaped at the ridiculous title. He had been getting lucky bonuses quite frequently, and that was with his really nice title Lucky and a bit of actual luck, getting that 1% chance quite a few times. But now… Now he would get a lucky bonus nearly every time he did something that gave him a bonus. Was that why he had gotten that good lucky bonus on his pathways? It had jumped a grade, skipping over uncommon. Was that the result of the improvement to his lucky bonus?

And then… There was that tiny chance added to the worldshaking bonus. What exactly did that mean? After a few more moments of studying it, he decided to shrug it off and turned to his other dungeon rewards. Namely, the title upgrades. Those had just got a lot more worth in his eyes…
