Cardmancer Book 2 Chapter 3

In truth, Lisa was in a situation. Before she entered the guild she had put up her last haul of goods from the solo dungeon run she did up for auction, which included some lower-rank B salamander parts and four eggs. What she did not add however was the dive's main loot for clearing the dungeon. Because why stop just short of claiming a dungeon ultimate prize when it was right there for the taking?

Sure, it will weaken it for a while but that was not her problem. If she got what she was due then she would have made three gold crowns. Considering she spent her savings of one gold crown on it, she was supposed to make a good return for her efforts. That is after the guild got their cut. Instead, she is looking to make over four gold crowns from the eggs alone, after the auction house and the guild will definitely take their cuts.

However, the question is when they will sell. That question caused her to worry as twenty silver was going to go into paying for her room. Leaving her with ten silver until she gets paid, and the predators called merchants have to have heard by now about her big score and are already spiking their prices to cause her to have to borrow against the score which she is determined not to do. But those were tomorrow problems. Right now all Lisa wants is a wash and sleep.

After leaving the guild she went to her apartment complex. A place where she had rented a room on a six-month renewable lease. Considering she still had a month left before her rent was due again, she felt no need to pay for the next extension either. At least at that moment. However, after arriving on the fourth floor to room 414 and putting in her key, she found it would not turn. After taking it out and putting it back in again she once again tried but found it did not turn again. Taking a moment to look at the lock and door, she noticed it was different from the one that was on the hinges. Which meant one thing. Someone had access to her apartment unsupervised.

“ Just fucking great, I leave for two months and I lose all my stuff. Not what I fucking needed right now.”

The trek back to the first floor was even more miserable than the trek to the fourth but she needed this sorted now. With a pounding on the door of the building owner's apartment for over a full minute told him she meant business. The fact that the door held without a mark against her frustrated pounding also told her how the owner took his own security over his tenants.

“ Who is it? I am about to have dinner.”

“ It’s Lisa, room 414. My key is not working.”

“ Who? The Lisa I used to rent that room to died three weeks ago in some gods-forsaken dungeon. Her belongings barely paid for the door I had to have had broken down to open up to new tenants.”

Lisa balled her fists tightly together ready to break the door down before sighing.

“ So that’s how it is?”

The voice on the other side of the door sounded rather smug.

“ That’s how it is, Be thankful I tolerated you as long as I have you damning animal.”

She took a deep breath before shifting her bag on her shoulder. Her only belonging in the world currently save for what she is wearing.

“ Enjoy your dinner then, you will be hearing from the magistrate in the morning.”

She could almost sense the landlord tense up but paid no more attention to him as she left for the magister's office. Which took her several more hours to file for a breach of contract. The good news is an official would find her apartment occupied fairly easily. Which will be an automatic refund of her twenty silver plus half a gold tip in deposit would give her a good buffer till she found a new place.

However, that was again a tomorrow thing. And Lisa was now tired, dirty, hungry, and very annoyed. With left with only one option now, she returned to the guild. Paid a silver for a room for the night and said screw it and deal with it in the morning.

In the morning things were not better. She was woken up at the crack of dawn like some rookie E grade and told to find work before she was forced to leave the guild or sate her hunger with noobie gruel. Which she swore to never again eat. The street vendor she got skewers from overcharged her more than she would have liked, showing they were well aware now of her future assets and made what she wanted to do harder.

With a fresh change of clothing and a simple kit to replace her stolen one left in her apartment, she hit the bathhouse to finally get clean before heading to the magistrate again for an update. As she expected, they sent someone to her former landlord and got ‘his’ version of things. Which, via the contract she had with him, was him being in breach. She took the seventy silver for a refund of rent and deposit but her refurbishment of lost goods was in contention based on the needs of repairs for the room. Again, this was not her first outing, nor her first time getting screwed over. She merely referred to the recording crystal she left with her contract before going back to the guild. Because she had her suspicions that if any landlord learned she is looking for a new place then they would try to take a pound of flesh larger than the guild would.
