Cardmancer Book 2 Chapter 4

It was well past noon when Lisa returned to the guild. Which is usually one of the slowest times for the guild. As most adventurers who stuck around most of the time were forced out by the staff to get out of their way. They were not real adventurers anyway. Just opportunistic parasites. So to see dozens gathered around the front being held back by several soldiers made her naturally curious. As a B rank, she naturally was allowed in only to find the guild hall in a minor panic as strange humans seemed to have taken over. Seeing a new face that was not busy, one of the clerks moved to her and took her arm. She did not resist as she was dragged to a human dressed as a well-dressed noble with two masked figures to his flanks. One is some kind of soldier, and the other is a maid. To her nose, they did not seem like true living beings.

“ Right, apologies for the wait Lord Trever. This is Milissa, a B rank adventurer. She will answer any of your questions.”

The clerk let go and was about to hurry off but she grabbed him by the arm and held out her guild tag.

  “ Make it official.”

The clerk sighs and touches the tag before being let go to run off to talk to a trio of drinking strangers.

“ So, I guess that was to make sure you get paid?”

Lisa nods and starts looking more seriously at the human. He held himself with impeccable posture and realized he was a good six inches shorter than herself.

“ Yea, money is a little tight right now as I got largely screwed over recently on a job. I got the last laugh though and are really more personal details than I want to give out right now. Doing whatever this is will ensure I have a roof over my head tonight.”

The strange lord nods his head as if understanding and that is when she realized he was looking at her like she was him.

“ You are a B rank based on the badge. So you might know the answer to this. I am looking to get leveled to at least level forty. I am a summoner by class, so what are your recommendations.”

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

Lisa blinked at the unexpected question but really considered it before answering.

“ A summoner's rules are different than most people when it comes to dungeons. Which, short of a major war or going to the front, is the best way to level. Most dungeons limit a party to six people. For summoners that translates to them plus one summon then two more summons for each person under the six-people cap. For example, if it is just you and me going into a dungeon. You would be able to bring nine summons. As I would take one, you and your plus one will take up another and the rest will be filled by eight more summons.”

The lord continues to nod as he listens to her and starts to ask other questions that should be common adventurer knowledge. This means this was not a normal noble with years of education as a noble under his belt. Plus the fact he is not looking down on her also told her all she needed to to figure out this was an otherworlder. Lisa then continued as her words sank in.

“ So for you, the optimum way to level would be to have just a single overseer while you and your summons take up most of the party experience share. As for the route of dungeons, that will entirely be based on your elemental preference. For example, if you are air talented then water dungeons would be best...”

“ Hell no to water levels.”

She paused hearing him clearly talking louder than he intended and he realised he said that out loud as well. So he just sighs and explains.

“ I am elemental neutral. So the element does not matter as much, but if I can I would prefer not to do anything underwater.”

Lisa merely nods hearing this, understanding no one wants to do underwater stuff.

“ I see, While I am no expert, being elementalless would actually be a major boon. Not only can your total experience in different environments be greater, you will not be set back by any disadvantage either. I would suggest creating an all-purpose kit that will work in any environment and prepare to raid a dungeon of each type in your climb to forty. This also means that you will need to kit each of your summons as well. The good news is you can train your summons in each dungeon type to let them gain an elemental affiliation as well. The problem I see however would be holy and undead dungeons.”

“ Let me guess, because holy dungeons are highly controlled by the churches and undead dungeons are usually purged.”

  Lisa nods again.

“ Correct, holy dungeons are a part of a god's holy domain and are allowed to be visited by their holy warriors to train. Undead dungeons are purged because they are too dangerous just like necromancers.”

Lisa then noticed he had a notebook and pen taking notes. When he started she was not sure, but not noticing worried her.

“ What would you suggest for my adventuring kit then?”

“ Rule one of adventuring, always bring rope, at least fifty feet of it. You can never have too much. Rule two, food and water, like rope you can never have too much. You will also want a good backup knife and maintenance tools... in fact, the more you can bring the better. I can go on and on with everything you need, but in general, you need a bit of everything, because you will find yourself in a position to need something you don’t have and be forced to improvise.”
