Cardmancer Book 2 Chapter 5

With a simple motion, the otherworlder closed his notebook and puts it into his inner coat pocket. The glint of mithril did not escape her eyes this time when he did this.

“ Thank you for the information. I will use it when I get one of the workers to finally spare me the time of day so I can get my job posted.”

Lisa smiles gently to say something flirtatious but caught herself and realized she was acting a little odd. She quickly realized this was due to his charisma. Even though she was of a much higher level than him, his outstripped hers. Still, she was a little disappointed that their meeting was ending. She could tell he was one of the good ones because he did not even try to use this advantage against her.

“ No problem, it is not everyday one meets an otherworlder.”

This causes him to stiffen in alarm a moment before chuckling.

“ Yea, it was quite obvious wasn’t it?”

  Lisa nods amused.

“ Well, ignoring the fact that a bunch of strange kids are being escorted by soldiers who act like that...”

She motions over her shoulder to a group of three otherworlders who were acting like overjoyed kids living in their favorite video game.

“ Your lack of knowledge of things you should have been schooled in as a noble a decade ago makes it obvious. Not to mention you keep watching my ears and tail more than my chest.”

  The otherworlder chucked at that.

“ Sorry, I did not get to meet many... beastkin?”

“ It is all right, I am a panther beastkin. Not too uncommon but...”

As she was about to explain how her people gain their animal characteristic when they turn fifteen a cough came from behind her.

You could be reading stolen content. Head to the original site for the genuine story.

“ Millisa, I am sure you have quite the story to tell, but unfortunately I must sho you away like the stray that you are. Lord Jeffery is already late for his meeting.”

Lisa tensed up slightly as she balled her fists before loosening them again to push off her seat.

“ Right, I have stuff to do today as well. I will leave you to it, Jameson.”

Before he could retort she got up and left. Instead of going to the crowded front desk, she decided to check the job board. As she guessed all the low-end jobs were taken already and there were not many new high-end jobs. There were two A-class jobs she knew she could not do on her own and party hunting right now sounded like it would be impossible with all the otherworlders. Speaking of them, she noticed a new post wanting people to help train the influx of new members. The list of jobs on the notice ranged from three-man f ranks to partner with to an A rank team to power level some otherworlder to seventy-five. She almost laughed at that one. To power level, someone like that would take half a decade and more money than it was worth. Then again it would be regular and secure work. The downside is no one is going to touch that one with a ten-foot pole. Everyone knows where these otherworlders are heading eventually.

What catches Lisa’s eye however is two jobs she would be perfect for. The first one is to form a team with a group of otherworlders who were doing the same thing the one she met was doing, but with more people. Essentially, she would be an instructor and overseer for five people. And knowing both adventurers and otherworlders, it would be like herding cats. No pun intended.

The other job though is what she suspected was a preliminary notice for the one she met. Unlike the other post that had only gold as a reward, it was varied. Varied which it included the option of several low level spells as well as practical upgrades such as a new gear and free repair or replacements. The kicker, and what will probably draw everyone to this job is training in a new otherworlder class.

Lisa did not hesitate to take a job token before putting it to her badge then pocketing it. Signaling to the guild she would be willing to take the job. As the notice said the meetings would start tomorrow she decided to finish up with the guild by renting a room at a half decent inn that was half the price of a guild room that would serve much better food and more importantly would not wake her up at the crack of dawn. Depending on how the next day went she might say screw it to her current situation and move on to another country.

  -----

Jeffery sat with the elf manager called Jameson as he spoke of some of the changes to his job notice and listening to what that means for his job post. In truth, it was just making changes to his contract with the guild for his job. Minor things. Instead, he had his mind on other things, such as the catgirl he met earlier. He could tell she was very knowledgable and obviously more experienced than him. Even though they were about the same age.

As he was reading some boring clause stating that the guild was not responsible for any of his goods while outside of one of their buildings he caught himself thinking about playing with her ears before slowly sliding his hand down her back before gently stroking her tail until he reached the tip and...

“ Is everything alright, Lord Jefferson?”

He managed to keep from blushing as he sighs and lays the papers down.

“ It appears everything is as we previously discussed. I assume the hundred gold crown deposit is enough on your end?”

“ Why yes, Lord Jeffery, though I must point out the price would be much lower if you allowed us to claim some of the spoils of your runs.”

  Jeff just shakes his head.

“ Unfortunately, guild 88 has need of those resources. Other than acting as a communication intermediary and providing some caravan escorts, which will be discussed in more detail with the member who leads the caravans, it is uncertain if we shall need the guild services beyond this. Naturally, if you have excess resources to sell as well, I suggest getting in contact with our main negotiation team.”

  The elf gently coughs.

“ Well, thankfully I am more in charge of jobs than resources. So, as soon as you mark the contract I can get those interviews set up.”
