chapter 73 the audience above

Legotas watched from his throne as the god of legends as the battle took place within Phabium's new necrotic kingdom. Which was soon to be destroyed as a hero made his way through it. Greero the grass pixie swordsman, if Legotas recalled correctly. This new kingdom of the undead was making a fight of it, but it would fall like the others before it. Though Legotas was aghast that the kingdom was more creative than just throwing hordes of the same undead at Greero, it would have made watching dreadfully dull.

Legotas smiled to himself and let out a little chuckle as he watched Greero close in on the ruler of this new undead realm, an undead skull called Maxwell. "I'll probably have to change that name to something far more sinister for the legend that this little adventure will be turned into." Legotas said to himself, continuing to enjoy the view of the battle between the hero Greero and the elite undead that Maxwell had to command.

The battle was interesting and put the hero on the back foot for a moment before he was able to turn the tide. Which was a classic moment in any adventure story, and Legotas always found himself enjoying the trope despite how many times he'd seen and heard it over the many millennia he had lived. Though once the tide had turned, the elites were quickly slain one by one, and with them defeated, Greero was closing in on Maxwell.

"Well, I better come up with that title quickly then." Legotas, he said to himself, seeing Greero closing in on Maxwell. "Perhaps the noxious one?" Legotas said to himself, sounding out the title he was going to give Maxwell for the tale of Greero slaying him in a few moments. "Well, it fits with all the smog he's been spewing out, but I'm not sure if it has the right oomph for an undead ruler's title." Legotas said he continued to debate with himself over the title.

Though he found himself having his eternal debate broken as a final guardian appeared to stand in Greero's way. Legotas looked and saw they were monster elementals, to his surprise. The last monster elemental was an acid slime lord that had been slain about five hundred years ago. So this tale has gotten even more interesting with two of them making an appearance. So Legotas sat back on his throne and watched the final battle, assured of Greero's victory.

Meanwhile, in another pantheon, a different god was not sharing Legotas feelings, though that wasn't to be unexpected, as it was Phabium, and as such, he was rooting for the other side. Phabium watched the battle going on below with baited breath, his form changing far faster than ever before, matching his anxiety at watching the carnage unfolding within Maxwell's necrotic smog kingdom.

He saw as great undead superweapons were cut to ribbons. He saw as mighty generals fed their armies and themselves into the meat grinder that was fighting heroes. But they never flinched from the fight, each charging at the hero and only charging with growing rage as the casualties grew. This may have been unexpected from an undead army, where losses would not be cared for as much.

Though those that thought this would be wrong, as the undead of Maxwell's necrotic smog did care for their own in their strange ways. Though they also did care in more traditional ways, as was shown when Phabium saw Horter charge on in fury in the slaying of Bunet, his sibling. Though as the battle went on, Phabium found himself nearly tearing apart. As he began transforming in different directions, one part was growing claws, another was turning into horse legs, and he was also trying to turn into a snake's tail.

His back was trying to turn into bat wings but was also trying to grow a dozen sets of dragonfly wings. So it was obvious to say that, looking upon Phabium, he was losing control of himself as he watched line after line be breached and the defenders fall like dominos. As he wasn't just watching the battle going on within the kingdom of necrotic smog but all the undead kingdoms that had come before, he watched them be snuffed out by heroes treating their destruction as a chore.

Phabium saw Maxwell elites try to eliminate Greero from becoming a strike team of elite undead. Phabium had seen such a plan tried and fail a hundred times before across many other monster kingdoms. Though these elites gave a good account of themselves, which is more than he could say for a few others that had tried the same plan. Phabium saw them eventually fall as the others before them had.

He waited with bated breath as his mouth went from twin dragon jaws to an open leech maw as Greero came closer to ending the one monster kingdom, giving his pantheon once again. He once again felt his helplessness as he could do nothing, the power required for him to act long gone from the pantheon. So all Phabium could do was watch, having to bear witness to the soul who would be slain for daring to serve him.

So it was that two gods from two opposite sides of the holy realm watched the final battle for a realm and the future to come. Both were sure of the outcome, that it would be a repeat of all that had come before, and both were left in shock as they looked on the mortal plane below. Instead of what they had expected, they saw something else entirely, which was a broken Greero, his body made into paste across the land from the frenzy of two elemental lords.

There was a stunned silence before the consequences of this act reverberated throughout both pantheons. In one way this event meant nothing—one hero slain out of the thousands that were roaming the land constantly killing villains and each other. With a constant flow of new heroes to replace those fallen, Greero might be mourned for a week before his replacements adventures made his fans forget him.

Though in another way this event changed everything, as for the first time in longer than anyone could remember, a monster had claimed the title of hero slayer. This would cause alliances to break and new ones to be made, as for the first time in a long time, the monster pantheon had something on the board that was to be feared, and all the pantheons would soon know it.

Legotas and Phabium found themselves in shock as they considered all the ramifications of what had just unfolded below them. Then, to add to the revelations that would shock the world, Maxwell finished his ritual, and the creation of a monster made of holy relics sent shock waves through the monster pantheons as they waited in eager anticipation of finding out what it was now and what it was truly capable of.
