Eight years ago, the world changed. Beings of all kinds—creatures once thought to be myths—rose up and took control, imprisoning humanity. Most didn’t want to harm the humans; their true purpose remained unclear. In time, a system was put in place to give humans new “value”: the Pet System. Once a human turns eighteen, they age out of the nurseries and are classified as pets. After classification, they begin intensive training to prepare for adoption by supernatural beings. At one adoption and training kennel, a married couple—a demon and a vampire—arrive in search of a new companion. The demon is eager. The vampire? Not so much. But everything changes when a sudden commotion breaks out. A new arrival has just been brought in: a small, defiant eighteen-year-old girl. The staff warn that she’s a problem case—unfit for adoption. But the vampire, who had no intention of choosing a pet, finds himself captivated. And he decides: he wants her.
